Team Bunker Down sponsored by Atlas Reels is crowned the 2010 American Striper Association Angler of the Year. The Mercury Striper Series held its last 2010 event in conjunction with the Million Dollar Rockfish Challenge in Virginia Beach December 30th through January 2nd 2011. Although the tournament got off to a rocky start with Mother Nature dumping 13 inches of snow the day of the captain’s meeting and basically closing the City of Virginia Beach for two days. The tournament was rescheduled to start three days later on December 30th. Ken Zwirko, Captain of Team Bunker Down hails from Union, New Jersey had a 6 fish total weight of 226.65 pounds for the season putting him 27 pounds ahead of 2nd place finisher, Team Amazing Grace from Middletown, Virginia. The 2010 Lady Angler of the Year is Donna Speaks from Groton, Connecticut. Donna is also a crew member of Team Bunker Down. The 2010 Jr. Angler of the Year award goes to Ann Unsworth fishing with Team Mod Squad out of Petersburg, New Jersey.

Congrats Ken and Donna! Looks like the infamous JT is in the background too! Very tough field to compete in, hard work pays off.

So...

They upped the kill 50% as the number of big fish was on the decline?

Or did upping the kill 50% drive the average down?

I believe they increased the number of events by 50%.... Each event would be over a couple days, as opposed to a five month long, 24/7 tourney like the Striper Cup. This would be why you might be surprised by the lower average weight.
