I have a big problem, I sealed about 20 baits for the first time using the PVC pipe method and I went to put a coat of E-tex on them and it fish eyed all over crazy weird. I seal my baits with a 60/40 mix of sanding sealer/lacquer thinner. I have always just thrown the baits in the paint can. this time I build some PVC tubes to make the job a little easier. After the baits are sealed I always let them dry completely and then sand them and wipe them down with some denatured alcohol before hitting them with a thin coat of E-tex to give me a glassy smooth surface to prime and paint.
I'm thinking there may have been some residual oils in the PVC pipe that soaked into the wood? Any ideas?
I know it wasn't the etex because I grabbed a biat I still had laying around from the can sealing and the same batch of E-tex went on perfectly.
I would love to get some comments on how to proceed. My thoughts would be to prime the baits first and hopefully that covers whats causing the problem and then proceed with the E-tex again?

MS, thats sucks man!!

Sounds like some kind of containment in the pvc tubing, could be oil from when its made, that stuff is full of chemicals too.

I seal my plugs in large glass jars, the kind you see pickles or pepper rings in at a deli, clean them out good and they have a screw on top so I just flip the jar every ten minutes or so to make sure the whole plug is coated.

I saw the pvc idea and thought it was cool but im sticking to what i know, less variables that way.

My opinion on epoxy in whatever method you are using it would not be worth a piss hole in the show, especially this year. Good luck.

mold release agent residue in the PVC pipe,,, rinse a few times with acetone, and then rinse with water several times... The acetone solvent should get rid of whatever is present...

Could the laquer thinner have eaten the PVC and released something into your sealer?

Is the PVC pipe new or was it used for something else prior to now?
PVC pipe is extruded so a mold release is not likely. Lacquer thinner may be extrapolating some of the plastisizers from teh PVC material.

Yeah I think the thinner is leeching plasticizer out of the PVC. I hit the baits with some BIN primer and that adhered great. I assume that that will be enough of a sealer to move forward with epoxy and paint?

How long should i wait on the primer? It drys really fast?
