I was looking for some info on making lures. What type would be best for begginer? I have some tools, dremel kit, and work bench. I would like to try it out. I am thinking about a wood plug. What type of wood would I need? Anyone with suggestions would be most welcomed! Thanks gentlemen:confused:

First get your self a lathe variable speed and some turning tools
Then a 12" Pilot drill 1/8" Dia.
Auger Bit
Some 1/2 by 1/2 square stock pine or a 1/2 inch dia dowel

Well you can get a Grizzly mini lathe for about 100.00. Or you can spend more and get a Delta. For swimmiers cedar, poppers you could use pine, or birch dowels. Use the search feature, or in user cp set you options for going back a year on posts. Then go back and check all the posts, there is plenty of useful info there.

Like Specialist said - there is plenty of good info, including several threads just like this. I've been dying to get into it myself but just have not had the time :( ... Too much already spilling over the plate

Thanks guys! I will use the search feature. I know what you mean John about time, but this winter I tied enough flies for the next 4 years (it was a cold winter) so it has freed up time for plug building. This is definitely a winter project for me because now it's time to fish! Not knowing anything about it I thought I would start the learning process.

A lathe you can add a duplicator to in the future is nice...Make all your patterns for plugs , then you can run them of all exactly the same..AYC..

If you really want to start building some quickly without the expense of a lathe, you can start with a combinations belt/disk sander for under a hundred bucks. and use some hardwood dowel 3/4 to 7/8" available at most lumber yards. On the Disk sander you develope your inital body style and angles. and smooth it out on the belt. If you have access to a Drill press, the easiest jig for drilling the centers is: Clamp a peice of 4"x4" down and drill a hole the same diameter as your stock down about 3" and place your dowel in it. this is a very easy jig method. than your sure the hole is directly center of the drill. Make sure you use the vaccume attachments on the sanders. Because you will be taking off a lot of material. I had a bad reaction a while ago from breathing saw dust.

Good Luck, if you want to see how I do them send me an email anc you can come down I'll be glad to show you: armandt@bsn1.net
