Every year in the springtime teachers, or a certain percentage of teachers get notified of layoffs pending the outcome of certifying budgets for the next fiscal year. Notifying all of them would more than likely be a ploy to strike at thier collective bargaining strength, which coincidently has been affirmed by the federal courts many times, trying to get the teachers union to give back. Teachers unions historically are the only unions, within various municipalities, never to give up anything in thier contracts knowing full-well that town meetings always vote the school budgets in without question. The teachers know this and leave thier other departments to fight over the scraps.

By the way....more than likely this is going to end up in "The Pit of Despair".....

The distinction this year is that all the Providence teachers were fired, not just layed off, apparently to permit the school department to rehire whomever it wants regardless of seniority.

I always thought that to fire somebody there needs to be cause...as in performance or discipliary reasons

RI's an "at will" state. No reason needed.

From what I read,

there is some sort of policy (not sure if its union or govt) that requires the teaches to be given advanced notice if they will be laid off. The deadline for this notice is 3/1. The mayor knows there will need to be layoffs however they dont know who, so in order to be in line with the policy, they sent pink slips to everyone. That doesnt mean they will all be laid off, its just a blanket order. I would compare this to a public company announcing that they plan to lay off in the coming year and details are being worked out. Happens all the time.

See I look at lay-offs and Firings as different issues.

Firing always carries a negative connotation....where lay-off does not

corrections to my post - they were firings, not lay offs.

Taveras announced on Tuesday that the school district intends to send out dismissal notices to its 1,926 teachers. The mayor said the unprecedented move was necessary because of the depth of the financial crisis facing the city and the schools.

School and city leaders said they were forced to issue the mass dismissal notices because of a state law that says teachers must be notified about possible layoffs or terminations by March 1.

In years past, the School Department has issued layoff notices, with the understanding that most jobs would be restored. This week, however, the department sent out notices of possible dismissal.

“Dismissal doesn’t have any recall provisions,” said Carlton Jones, the district’s chief operating officer. “If they are [laid off], they can come back on the recall list. We can’t afford to do that this year.”

It seems that the teachers union asked for them to change it from "terminations" to "layoffs", but the board refused. By terminating all the teachers, they can circumvent the "seniority" provision in bringing teachers back for the next school year.

There needs to be a change in course of how things are handled with the Unions. By terminating everyone, they can cut the dead weight who have been riding the luxurious train of seniority while doing the minimum required of them.

This will not only help Providence with their budget issues but also provides an opportunity to improve the quality of education.

JD, from1985-2010 federal education spending more than doubled(138%) while
achievement and graduation numbers remained flat.
Blaming teachers and throwing $$$ at education and
hoping for improvement is a waste of time.

You have taught, and have to know it's the lack of interest in the
home, kids taking drugs and disrespect by the students that are
causing the real problems.

I sub taught in 5 different schools and can honestly say there were
maybe 2 or 3 teachers in the public schools that were just doing the minimum.
I saw all good teachers in the private schools as the parents were
paying $$$ and took an interest in their kids, and the the discipline
was such that a kid would be expelled or thrown out for any kind
of disrespect or trouble.
It was a motivating place to teach.

Yes, nice mess that Mr Cicciline left Mr Tavares.

Thankfully, RI did not send Mr Cicilline to Washington, D.C. where he could bring his superior skill, intellect, and elan to the national level.

At least the PVD teacher's union has a track record of working with Dept Ed, Fed, and PVD in proactive ways unusual for an RI teacher's union.

This is happenening in all areas these days. You bust ass for years and all that you've acrued is taken away. Vacations, personal days, HEALTH INSURANCE CONTRIBUTIONS, pay raises even though the product is sold for more, name it. If the working stiff doesn't wake the hell up he'll find himself building a pyramid. Bring back the Wobblys.:smash:
Education is a public fail because the kids arrive unfit to be educated, the problem lies in apathetic homes with apathetic parents. This firing is just a form of PSY-OP used against every working person in this country and some idiots actually embrace it. As George Carlin said they think that they're part of the club, the in crowd, but they're NOT.
Firing people wholesale and making them beg for their job back for less is just frigging wrong no matter how you cut it. WRONG.

Thanks, Karl. The Tao of Carlin, the man was a prophet. Anger focused as sharp as a lazer.
He's correct on education BTW, look at what's happening in the Middle with a little quality education and people who crave it. They've reared up and are fighting their oppressors. We've been conditioned to NOT want to know, because we know deep down it's another screw job coming our way. Business in the USA has become all out the con and not about the delivery of a quality product for a reasonable price. Ever make a late payment because some assh*le in an office decided they would make more money if they changed the due date? And then hit you with a late fee? I bet you have.

which is why I think that all congressmen, actually ALL politicians should wear suits similar to Nascar drivers,... with patches showing all their owners.. uh.. "sponsors"..donors ..or whatever folks prefer to call them.. at least we would know WHO is pulling the strings of the puppets..that they truly are.

Excellent George Carlin video, Karl. Coincidently, the other day the governor of Wisconsin was duped into releasing information on how he planned to subvert his opponents by planting infiltrators among them, all the while thinking he was talking to a billionaire supporter, one of the oligarchs with power to influence.

Please check your facts. he very clearly said that it was suggested that he plant infiltrators but HE DID NOT. He did the right thing, funny you choose to ignore that.
Do you wonder how all these union people have the time to protest? because the union is paying them to! With taxpayers money!

So do another bong hit with George Carlin, I'll take the billionaires lead, something tells me he knows how to run a business.

When they fired/layed off al the teachers I think its safe to say everything within this school district cease to function. Like it or not the district and its teachers are functioning at a level that wont change regardless the outcomerip of this mass firing. It is a power trip and thats all. Guy who did the firing says he is god. God is about to be introduced to a whole parcel of attorneys, who in the end, will dictate the outcome.
