SO I got some good feedback about the possibility of buying a professionally rebuilt hull. Now I need an engine. I'm not particularly handy with engines, nor do I want to have to worry about whether or not the thing is going to start every time I turn the key. So my initial thought was to buy new.

But I see ads in On The Water each month from a place in Plymouth called Atlantic Boat Rental, they sell re-built outboards for a whole lot less than new. Anyone know anything about them? Or, can anyone comment on any experience with buying an outboard that has been professionally rebuilt?

If you mean Atlantic Boats
and they are in Wareham, or that's where they were at the time, then ya I got a motor rebuilt by them and wasted my money:devil2::wall:
they suck
I won't buy anything from them
2500 to rebuild a 200 hp suzuki
it didn't run right off the bat, I guess it was a spark plug, and he tried to charge me for it:smash:
I figure this must mean they never test ran it:wall:
this was near the end of the season since he took half the year to fix it, meanwhile getting money coming in for other boats placed in my slip:smash:
So the next season the motor craps the bed again, past the 90 days I'm out of luck
sold it right there in the water for a big loss
the guy has no problem taking your money, and will blame everything on something else, never their fault.

whatever you do, DON"T buy a motor from him

I've steered others away also, they were glad I did.
others mentioned how people were unhappy with them
I think the guy(owner) is an arrogant money grubbing jerk

Atlantic Boat Wareham (Slipknot comment) and Atlantic Boat Plymouth are 2 different places. Check with Freebie (Ryan) he does work at Atlantic Boat in Plymouth.

Thanks for the honest feedback, but yes, they are 2 unrelated businesses...

Atlantic Boat Rental offers a 1 year warranty, which sems pretty fair...I look forward to hearing from a member here that works there...

Be careful on rebuilts, if the engine was blown and if they did not know the exact cause it will blow again.

Look into the new LEFTOVER market. You get a unused motor (zero hours) that might be owned by an outfit that is closing up shop. Sometimes boat builders buy alot of the same motors and don't sell them all. It might be 2+ years old but still in the box. You can get great deals and the factory warranty is still good.

You may have to pay for creating and shipping across the country though but I have heard of some sweet deals on 2 year old motors.

Buzzy is correct. We are not the same as Atlantic Boats in Wareham.

We will have a booth at MSBA's Expo this year if you would like to stop in and get some info on what we do. I'm not sure what the rules are on here about advertising as I just have a basic account here so I don't want to get into much more. You can call the shop and ask for me if you like. I can answer any questions you might have.
