View Full Version : $4-5 Gas - How will this affect how you fish?
JohnR 04-26-2011, 05:33 PM On the doorstep of $4 gas which could easily go to $5. What are you going to do to change up? Will you change anything up? $1 per gallon ads $2000+ for me per year.
I'd like to get some suggestions, yes, some are obvious, on how to switch it up. Without getting all political - that belongs in a different forum :wall: here
(http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/political-threads/)
Fish more with friends (which means fishing less tides I like).
Considering a fuel efficient car for most of my driving including non-beach fishing. A fuel sipping wagon.
Fishing more local.
Getting two tides on a trip when more than 50 miles from home.
What other suggestions / other ways to change things up are?
Notaro 04-26-2011, 05:40 PM I won't be able to go to RI that much then. And I will have to change my fishing plans too.
Justfishin' 04-26-2011, 05:44 PM I'm starting to seriously look for something that gets better mileage than my truck or jeep. And like you mentioned, start staying for two tides. Guess I'll have to take the back seat and wall out so I can crash in it........ all my rods are one piece too....... how do you suppose a rod rack will fit on a Prius?
WESTPORTMAFIA 04-26-2011, 05:45 PM You might see me riding my canal bike on Rt 195. Carpooling is tough. I like to fish and not worry about leaving. This year is def gonna suck as far as gas if you drive a truck.

Rob Rockcrawler 04-26-2011, 05:46 PM It already has, i didnt make an early season trip yet this year. I will be making the trips i do take longer. Instead of making trips down after work for a few hours every week i will save them for the weekends, when i can stay until sunday. Im going to be gettin extra cozy in the back of my jeep this year. I did consider getting a wagon but i need the 4 wheel drive and its just not economical to me to get another vehicle.
striperman36 04-26-2011, 05:52 PM maybe, I'll combine going to work and boat fishing in the same trip.
Probably on fish 1 weekend day.
we are dumping my wifes pathfinder and getting a nissan versa. next year i hope to get a 4x4, 4 cyl toyo pickup and leave the f250 in the driveway alot. more fishpooling - by truck or boat. and definately fishing more local spots
BigFish 04-26-2011, 05:53 PM Still gonna fish as I always have! Life is short so I do not plan on cheating myself! I live close to great fishing both fresh and salt and will fish surf and from my kayak! Trips to the canal will use most of my fuel but all in all its worth it!! Nothing changing here!:uhuh:
definitely going to affect me. I probably will only fish the salt a handful of times before memorial day. Once the topwater bite really gets going I'll probably go more. But until then I'll be concentrating on freshwater. Have a spot where big fish stack up to spawn and will readily take an artificial. Only 10 min down the road. that's where you'll find me for the next month...
PRBuzz 04-26-2011, 06:02 PM My only restrictions will be 1) weather and 2) work......
Raven 04-26-2011, 06:15 PM i can only go when its raining or over cast (typically)
although i'd like a more economical vehicle on gas
this one is gonna have to do...
its comfortable to NAP in (very important)
two tides -> for one trip < definitely

I like your attitude. If you break off one lure that costs you more than the gas.

I hear that! Not going to affect my fishing at all. I just won't take my girl out for diner as much. Fishing season is too short to deprive myself due to gas prices

BigFish 04-26-2011, 06:45 PM Winter is a long wait also to get where we want to be! Buddying up is a great way to go if possible! To my kayak buddies I can always squeeze another yak on my truck if need be?

Thats very true! :uhuh:
djlesco 04-26-2011, 06:55 PM I was thinking of putting a rod rack on top of my 84 vanagon.. Can hold six people and alot of gear.. Start a fi fish taxi service.... 6 people within a 30 mile radius $10 a head for two tides..

That will put a new name to going on tour with Phish.
Slingah 04-26-2011, 07:00 PM My fishing this year is going to be all local and by kayak....maybe a little shore fishing but really not planning on it.
late-start 04-26-2011, 07:01 PM See myself staying on the north shore after work, instead of driving down to the canal / cape. But that's a whole new beast and not looking to waste time looking for spots either...
JohnnySaxatilis 04-26-2011, 07:11 PM <----- Kia Spectra. get some 25-26mpg
Ya i know. But who looks funny at the gas pump :rotf2: 44$ today to fill
I'll drive to wherever the hell its goin off if someone asks me. Race? no problem. Rhodie you say? Im there
stripermaineiac 04-26-2011, 07:32 PM Hard part for me is mines paid off. to get a more efficient buggy i then add a payment that I don't have.I've already cut my cape trips by well more than half and Rhody well only made 4 last yr. I do sleep in my buggy way more than I used to. The boat well didn't use it lat yr might not this yr. 2 kayaks work good.
jasonsnova 04-26-2011, 07:44 PM ya its gonna be rough....i live 1hr 20min from my favorite fishing and pulling the boat with my tundra....gulp! but considering i just dropped 12k on a new motor i plan to use it! i'll be taking more buddys with me to chip in on fuel.
BigFish 04-26-2011, 07:49 PM Filled up for $100 yesterday! Figure thats $400 month just for the usual driving.....add the assorted trips fishing every week......I bet gas will be about $650 month??? Car payment pales in comparison to keeping the damn thing fueled up!!!:wall:
Pete F. 04-26-2011, 07:57 PM I'll probably spend $1500 on gas to go fishing in saltwater if it gets to 5 bucks, but sleeping in my truck at a campground is cheaper than a motel. Maybe expensive gas will keep the yahoos from running their generators while I'm trying to sleep. Though the St Croix mojo I want is gas for a couple of trips.
chefchris401 04-26-2011, 08:28 PM Driving the speed limit has already helped, 60 or 65 on the highway, makes for a slower trip but the mileage is a lot better.
Besides the trips to the ditch most if my spots are pretty close about 15 to 25 miles from the house, so not to crazy.
I work too hard and too long not to go when I can.
I will plan a bit more and make sure the tides are key.
Fish smarter not harder.
I dumped my Ford f 150 super crew last season and got a 4 cylinder Mazda tribute. I love that little suv.
Gets about 32 highway and 25 city, a little slow getting up to speed but gets it done.

Johnny that car has been good to you, and it's seen it's share of use, keep it until it catches fire or seizes to function.

big jay 04-26-2011, 08:34 PM If it makes you feel better Chris, I put $80 in the 150 today, and it wasn't even filled.
On the plus side, the crowds might not be so bad this year - I'm an optomist.

djlesco 04-26-2011, 08:36 PM Maybe this is a way of paying extra not to fish with yahoos...then again they may need to fish more to feed there family because alot of people are paying just to go to work

Yah, I got a sweet deal on a 32 Slampage (Rampage) with dual 440 Chryslers. It will probably burn about 60-70 Gph stuffed in the corner. I figure its not that bad concidering I fish less than 30 miles out. A chance to move up in boats without taking out a loan. And when the time comes ill throw a set of diesels in it.

Mr. Sandman 04-26-2011, 08:48 PM Gas is 4.55 here now on the street. At the marina it has got to be 5 bucks+.
I don't drive anywhere in my car so the cost is not that painful (< $100/mo) . But I burn about 3000 gals/year of diesel in my boat so do the math... it sucks. ( I only burn 10-11/gals per hour...twin 440's...is a dinosaur, you good luck trying to sell that. that is a $350/hour fuel burn, ouch. 85 hours of running those gas engines will pay for a new diesel.)
In answer to your original question...I will cut back as much as 50% of my boat use, after that, I am heading to the golf course and will fish the beach locally. This is rediculus. There is no supply problem!
djlesco 04-26-2011, 08:51 PM Adverse effect....
Poachers will poach more because of this....

chefchris401 04-26-2011, 09:00 PM The nice thing is the spots I fish never have people.
Yes Big Jay that does make me feel better! I miss that truck until I'm putting gas in the Mazda.

sully12rng 04-26-2011, 09:04 PM I'm still gonna fish. I live for days on end for very few dollars. I pack food and drinks and I just fish and sleep. I Try to fish every weekend, I pack my food and move with the fish camping along the way. Look at it this way..... a few rods, my waders, top, plugs and gear + fly rods. Thats 3 or 4 grand Im not gonna let collect dust.
Some cold cuts, a box of cereal, gallon of milk some pb+jelly in the big cooler with some treats in the back of the jeep and I'm good for a couple of days. I do get quite a few coffees. Maybey i should put a coffee maker in the jeep. Half the fun is my drive and the sandy parking lot sandwiches.
Mr. Sandman 04-26-2011, 09:05 PM If you start seeing smart cars with cooler racks it is time to find a different hobby.

I figure that ill get a couple a bucks in scrap for the dodge anchors and throw in a set of B series cummins that I have from a takeout. I was being sarcastic about running the 440's. I ran a single 454 in a light boat for 1 season, never again. And yes but ya can't beat it for 3K

SurfCaster413 04-26-2011, 09:49 PM I am finally doing it this year for the first time ever. Gas surcharges for my customers. They will be the ones paying for my fishing trips. Perks of owning a business lol
MarkB 04-26-2011, 10:45 PM The hour drives to the canal will be mostly a thing of the past. I'll be hitting Quincy, Dorchester and Southie this year. I may not catch large like at the canal, but I'll catch and I'll be fishin.'
robc22 04-26-2011, 11:43 PM Everyone should save money and give up that long drive to the ditch......:uhuh::uhuh::grins::grins:
I'm not going to change a thing, accept I will try to spend less in other areas of my life. Maybe take the wife's car instead of my truck. I'll figure it out. But like others have said, fishing is too important for me to miss out.
Good luck to all this season!
Back Beach 04-27-2011, 04:03 AM I think this might have already been suggested by someone in the past, but I plan on letting my family starve.
BigFish 04-27-2011, 04:45 AM I think this might have already been suggested by someone in the past, but I plan on letting my family starve.
Could just be the solution for the childhood/adult obesity that is plaguing our country!!!:uhuh:
Rmarsh 04-27-2011, 05:39 AM Gas prices won't affect my fishing at all. Company I work for pays for all of it. On average, three nights a week, no questions asked.
Best group of people I have ever worked for.
Typhoon 04-27-2011, 06:34 AM I wont be making runs to Wildcat chasing tuna fish. Then decide to head to Southeast corner then the golf balls in Truro, then hit the South East Corner, then the Race, then Southwest corner, then back to the barn in Green Harbor.
A lot more days spent bass fishing at the race. Sorry Jay :D

yowzer....
makes 21gph on the blackfin look like a dream. Makes Mr. Sandy's boat look even nicer....
from the surf: won't change much. I'm too lazy to drive to westerly or the canal anyway.
on the edge... looks like we need to work smarter for tuna and mahi....
Diggin Jiggin 04-27-2011, 07:13 AM My gas bills go up about 50% once I start fishing, this year it will just be a little more $$$. Maybe it will make it so the eels/tackle $$$ doesn't jump out so much on the visa bill.
Rockfish9 04-27-2011, 07:13 AM For me, it wont change alot, the only thing might be the "iffy" nights.. those nights when there is a "chance" of T storms , when I normaly would drive down any way... and if it happens, turn around and go home, or those nights when the wind is the "wrong" quardrent or blowing a little stiffer than I want... I may be more inclined to stay home than drive 30 minutes to the boat.... I'll probably watch the fuel consumption a little closer ( I have a GPH gauge on my Garmin GPS)... I used it a little last fall, while running the beach, and found that i could squeeze a few more miles out of a tank by keeping the fuel flow @ 6-8 GPH ( 115 merc on a 18' center console) which, if memmory serves me was about 22knots...other than that... it's "buisness as usual"
The Dad Fisherman 04-27-2011, 08:00 AM Just keep it more local...
probably will put a damper on YakRat Scrambles for me......will make a couple
Same deal w/ trips to the canal....
Typhoon 04-27-2011, 08:59 AM You'll also see more people getting commercial striped bass licenses to supplement their trips.
piemma 04-27-2011, 09:48 AM I have a Suzuki SX4 I bought my wife that she hates. Says it's too small so I now have it. 32 to 35 MPG. It's gonna look stupid with 10' rods on the roof but I don't care. I'll burn about 4 gallons R/T for the Canal.
As for the boat, probably fewer pleasure cruises and more serious fishing. Definitely less looking for bait and more eels.
$4.26 for 87 octane in ct .... Wow

redlite 04-27-2011, 10:18 AM .....gonna make sure the baby uses both sides of the diaper before a fresh one.......will have to combine trips to the store for diapers with fishin....Less trips to the canal for 3 hr tides as well. Already impactin me now. I don't take a daily ride down to the water (20miles r/t) just to make sure it is still there and recharge the soul.
It is gonna suck, but better than walkin every where.......I am gonna have to get a job.........
The Dad Fisherman 04-27-2011, 10:29 AM .....gonna make sure the baby uses both sides of the diaper before a fresh one........
Lose the Diapers Completely....just follow the kid around with a Scoop and a Wal-mart bag.
macojoe 04-27-2011, 11:09 AM I need the truck to tow the boat and the camper, and getting a 2nd car is a idea but when you take in the cost of the car, gas, ins, reg, tax, and repairs what are you saving??
At $4 a gal I will spend $440 to fill the boat and thats about 4 trips depending were i go, I will stay close this year for most of my trips but there will be a few off shore trips for sure!!
Rockport24 04-27-2011, 12:33 PM Not too much will change for me, I usually never leave the north shore anyway, although, I might try to stay super local and avoid the 30 min trips to varous locales, but if the fish are there, I'll still go.
tautog 04-27-2011, 01:11 PM will definitely be adding an extra body to canyon trips to offset costs.
tysdad115 04-27-2011, 03:15 PM GMC Terrain ...30MPG, all wheel drive and a damn nice vehicle. I might know someone that can drive one whenever they want..:spam: :uhuh:
Saltheart 04-27-2011, 04:49 PM I made the nescessary changes in advance as most predicted this would happen. The hybrid gets 37.5 in the warmer weather (now until Dec) compared to the 17-18 the Blazer gets. Now one big issue is the 1 piece canal rod that normally fits inside the Blazer or in the roof rack. I'm hoping the new 2 piece century stealth 10 footer I got at the MSBA show will fill that role. If not its the 2 pc Century Tip Tornado light until the new 11 foot Stealth comes in.
Now if we have 3 or 4 people its back to the Blazer but its usually 2 so looks like the Hybrid may be the new fishing machine
MVbluefish 04-27-2011, 05:25 PM Glad the boat has a small 4stroke, not so happy about the SUV's V8. 15 mpg's makes you think twice about long distance traveling to try another spot.
BMEUPSCOTTY 04-27-2011, 05:49 PM It won't affect my fishing much... I didn't fish much last year, 80% of my fishing is about 5.4 miles away, and I just traded the rubicon for an almost new tacoma 4 banger... yeah, I have a payment now, but doing the math quickly on my 90-100 miles 5 days a week (to work) the gas savings will just about offset the payment, and that's with plugging in $3.90/gal... plus there is almost 90000 less miles on the engine... also, I don't have to throw the trash barrels in the jeep anymore and make 3 trips to the transfer station....:smash:
ps... who's got SB stickers???:jump1:
MAKAI 04-27-2011, 06:07 PM Lot's of three tide sleeping in the truck, at least it's a comfy little condo.
Bribing the dog sitter will be expensive though.
I paid $5.00 a gallon today for 87... But I was in manhattan.

cheferson 04-27-2011, 06:25 PM Getting 100 mpg+ and 28/35 mpg!! Saw this BS coming! Wait till the dollar really tanks ....Short trips/scouting on the on the CHappys and swipe the wife's FIt when she is sleeping! Trunk/storage space in it is unreal.
MAKAI 04-27-2011, 07:39 PM So . . . . . are we officially a 3rd world county now ?
It feels it.
Adam_777 04-27-2011, 08:01 PM I will fish less.Even with a small car.Gas prices make me ill.
Steve K 04-28-2011, 06:00 PM It will not affect me much at all. I don't have enough free time to fish that the increased cost will be minimal.
Gas is $4.60 in Chicago.
djlesco 04-28-2011, 07:53 PM I need blood..just slit my wrist to fill the gas tank.
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
piemma 04-29-2011, 03:13 AM I've been filling the tank on the new boat. 65 gallons so I'm looking at $260 to fill up. Last year gas was $2.60 at this time = $170. $90 bucks more for the same $*^%$#.
Once she's full I will never let her get below 3/4.
ProfessorM 04-29-2011, 08:29 AM still be fishing at least 4 days a week but I'll be bitching about it. Thank god I work on Cape so I have to go there anyway and my boss lets me leave my boat at work too as my truck guzzles gas like no tomorrow. It helps a lot.
Pete F. 04-29-2011, 01:22 PM I was looking at sailboats again, that would mean spending wknds on lake champlain. If I could plant a few stripers in there I would consider it.
Uncle Rob 04-29-2011, 04:18 PM I'm already looking to ditch my gas eng. boat for one I can run on bio fuel.
