Do you guys think that the first fish that arrive are bigger than some of the school fish we have in aug.

I would tend to think that the first fish to show up will be well over 70". If I hear of any tuna caught this weekend I will be sure to wait a few weeks and then let everyone know they just arrived.:rotf2:

I don't know if its true or not but Tred Barta had a theory that no matter which route they take they wind up south of Block Island by mid to late may, less than a days swim from there to the cape.

Must be some mistake, None of the Viking boats have made a canyon trip yet this year. One privately owned boat caught a 200 lber inside of Hudson canyon almost two weeks ago.

Water temps today were in the mid 40's on the bank damn cold. Hope the tuna have hats and tail warmers. Few guys were out there trolling for tuna, did not see any hookups or word on the radio.

Mark there are tuna here. A few boats that went found no joy but it is hard to draw a conclusion on 3 boats results rather than a fleet. The tuna are a bit further away than what we are used to in July so I'd venture to guess they weren't fishing the right area. The water temps are actually perfect for setting up a long and productive season if the bait stays. Hopefully those bigger fish stick around instead of b lining it the the herring rich waters of Cananda. Send me a pm and I'll tell ya where they were seen.

Hopefully easy question: when can rec's legally start fishing (and keep) for BFT in New England?

I have always had the June 1st date in my mind but can not find a written thing anywhere to state that date. I think that is just when Matt starts catching?:rotf2:

Another came from just east of Hudson Canyon over the weekend. 108 lber.
Was that viking tile trip out of NY or MA? I ask because I know Kilsong was on the one out of NY and he never mentioned seeing any tuna.

The recreational fishery is open now, so as soon as fish show up we can keep them within the slot limit. The commercial fisheries open on June 1.

What is the best time to go for yellow fin tuna? We have a guy at work trying to put together a charter and we've been told everthing from the first week of June was the best to the middle of the summer??? I know there is no guarantee when it comes to catching but if we're going to do a trip I'd like to go at prime time. Thanks

Phil
June 1st opens commercial, thats why a few of commented they don,t count till then.
Me, I could care less about chasing them unless I have a charter or I have a shot at selling them.
You can fish for them now.

Later in the season if you are leaving from NE.
Figure after the 4th of July for best odds. 99% trolling. After Labor day there will be a better chance of getting fish chunking (reliably)

we're hoping to run in the second half of June, but the water is still mostly unfished, and we need to shake the boat down a few times.
(and we aren't charter, so don't contact us).

given the weather, one option are the head boat trips, maybe b/c they get washed out less...

Late August/September is usually a good time.

It really depends on the eddy's and the water in the Canyon but I agree September is the month I would pick a charter.

Problem with sept is the weather. Usually right after labor day the cold fronts start to come through every 2 to 4 days and they bring the wind with them. I would guesstimate that the odds of getting out for a nice trip on any given 2 day window you pick now for September is about 50-50.
