I have missed THREE friggin chipmunks this week.

Two I got by accident.

Here's a GREAT way to get them. Take a 4" piece of pvc pipe...tape one end...THIS is how I lost them! You got to tape the opposite end.

The put some seeds near the untaped end. Just a few. Keep an eye out for them...when they come to eat the seeds you need to jump out, they get scared and run right into the pipe EVERY time. Pick up the pipe and givem their own private swimming pool c/o your local water dept

First one I got it got away because I couldn't get the hose quick enough and I was 20' away and he got out. Little did I know there was ANOTHER in the same pipe. I put the pipe down and the little effer ran out. Hows that for a slap in the face.:rotf2:

I got another this afternoon but he ran into another pipe and I didn't see him. I picked up the first pipe...he runs out the other pipe :smash::smash::smash:

Tape the pipe. They can't run out the open end quick enough before you pick the pipe up.

I am up FIVE mice this week. 2 out back, one tried to swim in my pool, and 2 at the shop this week. Those little white plastic Ortho traps work PISSER and can be used multiple times :spam:

i strained my back hauling pink sand today to fill holes
with sand and garden rocks in the 40% shade house

as i walked down there yesterday two of em
said: hey! we like the new wall Dude. They are
snipping off cabage leaves for no reason.

Good idea on using the pipe , as i forgot that trick.
must be due to OLD age :uhuh:

the main coon cat has little interest in the chippy's
he's more of an exclusive mouser

But a Fisher was screaming bigtime the other night
and he was growling loudly.... so i had to go out
@ 11:00 pm and scoop him up for the wifey.

Chippy Stairway to heaven..

Fill 5 gallon pail 1/2 way with water. Dump in enough black oil sunflower seeds to cover the top. Place pail next to outside stairs where chippys roam.. put wooden plank to edge of pail and sprinkle a few seeds along the plank..... chippys see all that seed and jump in... drown in about 5 minutes...

the problem with that idea is that the black sunflower seeds don't float for very long and the striped ones are best for floating
but they're much harder to find....

when you set a gopher trap in their main tunnel
the back of the trap has a nickle sized hole in the back
so the gopher thinks there is a tunnel opening ahead
bumps into the triggering mechanism and gets killed

I'm going to use this technique (trick) today on my
pipe traps... to fool those damned chippy's.

Chopped up some holes last night and filled with stone. They really been going nuts around the pool again.

Jumped in the truck this am and saw another on the front steps...I now have his secret front step safe zone spot....little bastid saw me looking at him and hid behind the blocks next to the stairs. Almost looked like he was peeking around the corner at me.

4" pipe is going there this afternoon

Spence: Nearby woods are easily traveresed by the Wiley chipmunk and they will soon return... by listening to other chippy's chirping away and their hearing is Phenomenal.

Taking them to a further location is the only recourse and that isn't cost effective unless you have other reasons for going there....

Like going to Uxbridge for example

2 more this afternoon.

One was 10' up a tree he did a 4 legged electrified jump to a pile on the ground.

Second was in same tree on opposite side 20 minutes later. Did the pause sit and death fall.

I'm beginning to see that there are ALOT more of these things than I thought. There's fresh digs all over the yard on the hills, under fences, in a dirt pile, next to garage etc.

I've got quite a few of these things confirmed dead already.

Wasn't it suggested you go the pellet rifle route months ago? You see how easy they make it and how effective they can be. No more running out to grab traps, just a quick effortless resolution.

The other day a tree rat was on one of my feeders about 30yrds away. Before, I'd go outside yelling and flailing my arms like an idiot. Now, I casually walk over, get the pellet rifle, open the sliding door, pull the trigger and get back to what I was doing. The foxes and feral cats take care of the cleanup.

You just got to wait in the driveway or the backyard for them in the afternoon seems to be a great time to get them. They don't seem to be active in the early evening. I been finding 2-3pm is a good time :hee:

Another! Not 10' from the garage. This one I wasn't expecting so close to the others I've gotten near this. Most of them have been around this one tree and some would sit on the lower branches of the tree. This one went under the fence in front of the boat-must have been the same one digging in the loom pile on the other side of the fence. If that's the case there's more than one in each burrow. Frig me. I haven't even started on the back of the yard yet. I saw two more to the side today but couldn't get to them with tree branches in the way.

3 fresh holes today next to the side door. One out back when I walked in my office. Scared him away no way for a shot there. Did get off two shots into on coming out of the new holes. The first shot he acted funny like I hit him and he went up next to the rock. I reloaded and by the time I was ready again he had perked up and jumped up the steps. I put another shot into him and pretty sure I hit him from 10' away. He hasn't come back.

I think it's going to be a long summer.

I have WAY TOO many squirrels that have been digging in every potted plant and garden bed every day. To top this off, they have all just weaned their FIRST litter of the season, so we have over a dozen grey tree rats roaming our property at any given moment.

This is my issue. Walked out the front door this morning and there were no few than 5-6 in my immediate field of view digging in our small potted veggies and tearing into the bird feeders. The damn things are so brazen that they don't run away when I go up to them, they just move slightly out of range.

With the yuppy neighbors, I have to be selective of when I thin them out so I'm only able to pick off 2-3 a week. If it weren't for the neighbors, I'd probably be able to get 4-5 a day for a few days.

Took a few "practice" shots in the back yard this morning (made sure the neighbors couldn't see) and made a couple tree rats take off with a little more than a wounded pride.
If they keep coming back, I'll have to "pump up" my presentation a little more. (10X instead of 3X)

My brother wanted me to take care of a couple of pigeons that had been coming to our yard. I had to explain to him that they aren't a problem because they only came to the yard because of the cheap birdseed and breadcrumbs that get scattered in the yard.

The real problem are the squirrels, because they are destructive in many ways. They will destroy bird feeders, birdhouses, dig up garden beds and plants, chew up lots of veggies BEFORE they are even close to harvestable size, and they leave their little turd pellets all over the place.

Only time will tell whether or not they get to stay or go to "critter heaven"!

Steady on the fence POW I saw his entire white underbelly go flying off the rock. He got back in his hole. If he ain't dead by now he's gonna be a bit swollen for a few days. :hee:

I've been observing this thread for awhile. Munks have taken over my yard and now foxes are coming in and digging huge holes all over the place trying to get the, someone has to go....
I used one of the big storage containers (giant tupperware) and filled it with water and sunflower seeds. put a few 2/4 from the bulkhead to the container. I've fished 12 out over the last 3 days. remember those red squirrels that invaded my garage? fished 5 out too.
Also set up a have a hart trap on the other side of the house - 5 caught and dunked so far. Still see tons in the yard but Im chipping away (pun intended)

Pee around the areas where the chipmunk holes are. It will keep the chipmunks and foxes away. I've been peeing outside when I get home late from fishing.

I also recently noticed the red squirrels around my yard. Must be about 6 of them that I've seen. I'll keep peeing, but maybe I'l try the suflower trick with them, too.

so I scooped out the carcasses, and most of the sunflower seeds were water logged and sunk. There was only a handfull of seeds floating in brown water. Came home last night, 4 more chipmunks! I cant believe they dove into that muck.
My tally may be a little off but in less than one week I have over 20 munks and 10 red squirrels. I am actually staring to feel bad about this. I filled up there holes and so far no ones been digging. I closed up the extermination camp and moved the have a hart to the front yard to catch any stragglers.
Dont bother with a 5 gal bucket, go with 20-30 gal container, set up a few cinder blocks so they can climb up, fill with water until about 6 inches from the top and fill with seeds. :uhuh:

They were all over the yard like white on rice upto 2 weeks ago.
Then over the last 2 weeks they all disappeared.
Yesterday I go out to cut the lawn and there was a large dropping
laying there. Has to be a coydog or the return of the fischer cat
as there are no cats or fox showings anywhere.

CAPTURED one Osama Bin Chipmunk

His insurgent bodyguards were a fierce battle they were sworn to protect their supreme leader. They fired multiple vollies of acorn bombs to no avail. I dispatched them with 3 anti tank rounds at 100' and alas all that was left was their leader who was about to become a martyr. He popped out of his hole in the fence not 30 seconds later looking for his bodyguards and the trained ninjas swooped in to dispatch him with a single shot. He was airlifted to the USS Vinsfist where he was given a proper chipsmunkian religion burial at sea

Ok I threw him over the fence :smash:

nope but I got two more about a 1/2 hour ago. :smash:

I know there's still at least two more near the pool because I see them running back and forth in the grass

This is nuts. Btw I think 95% of what I've posted here has been at my house.

The guy out front at the shop got pissed that I'm taking them out there too. He went and bought a trap. I watched everytime I went near the door today. I saw multiple chipmunks sitting near the trap. He even moved the trap once too. These things are way too smart for traps. He says stop shooting them and I'll trap them then take them far away. I think he was about to cry.

whatever.... After seeing just how many rodents there are around this year I don't want them around anymore. This guy is feeding the things non stop so he's drawing them to the building. They run in my garage, they run in my space, and they're not scared in the least of you. One ran right between the legs of my landlord a few weeks ago. Guy couldn't believe it.

Yesterday I go to Home Depot. I drive home and there's one sitting in the middle of the road in front of my house. Like he's the friggin lookout. He was one of the six yesterday. Couldn't get out of the truck fast enough when he runs in my front yard :smash:

Until they die, might be scrounging for food source any/everywhere but the longer term is looking good (from the Boston Globe):

The squirrel looked lost as it scurried in the shade of the old oak trees, searching for sustenance in stumps, beneath fallen leaves, along a grassy bank of the Muddy River that had been like an open buffet in recent years.

But there was not a single acorn to be found.

A year after a bumper crop of acorns littered streets and parks throughout the region, these nuts seem to have vanished this autumn in New England, a little-understood phenomenon that scientists say will ripple throughout the ecosystem and devastate the population of everything from chipmunks to owls.

In a typical fall, he said, a mature oak tree will produce about 250 pounds of acorns, which serve as seeds for saplings and a vital source of food for rodents, turkeys, deer, bears, and many other animals. At his research station in a forest along the border between Massachusetts and Connecticut, Ashton said the oaks this year have each produced less than half a pound of acorns.

Richard S. Ostfeld, a disease ecologist and senior scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., said up to 90 percent of the current population of rodents could die by next spring as a result of the lack of food. That would mean a massive death toll, as the number of rodents has spiked over the past two years, given all the acorns.

“I expect to see a severe crash in the number of mice and chipmunks, and we could be looking at a loss of squirrels of as much as 50 percent,’’ said Ostfeld, who has studied acorns for more than a decade.
