--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This morning while on our way back from fishing we witnessed a very cool but frustating sight. Hundreds if not a thousand of 12 to 16" bass gorging themselves on baby sandeels in a very small area. Fish were crashing bait in 3" of water, blowing up everywhere. you could see big schools of sandeels swimming along the surface just to be destroyed by the bass.

We tried everything we had, redgills, small teasers, small soft plastics. Managed one small fish that was as fat as it was long, a baby huey type fish. This is the type of fishing flyfisherman must dream about.

Ive never tried so hard to catch small fish :wall:

Not so sure...when there's that much bait in the water it's almost just a matter of luck.

Next time try a snag hook :rotf2:

Ill put it this way I dont target 12" fish but watching them feed like that makes you want to catch them.

Plus after a two fish night anything at the end of the line would have been good.

A friend of mine used to guide in chatham in and around Monomoy. We ran into this a few times out there. The only thing that worked was sand eel fly's in bright colors tied in tandem. One in front of the other. Two of the identical thing that is slightly different than the forage for some reason will get the attention of a couple of fish most times per pass.

I have a 2 year old, and a 4 month old... It is tougher, but certainly not impossible.. you just have to adjust... You will find your new routine quite quickly and life continues. Best of luck, and remember, no fish is worth the dead-beat dad award, so balance is key.

I got into the same situation the last two night. First night got a 20 lber. Last night got 8-10 fish mostly <20" 1 maybe keeper in the mix. When i suited up last night i had to dig the sandeels from friday out of my wading boot laces. Same size...

Or on a Crab Hatch - fish swirling all around you and the only love is when they bump into you because you are in the way.

Or on a Crab Hatch - fish swirling all around you and the only love is when they bump into you because you are in the way.

Finicky bass is what makes chasing them so interesting! Sometimes they'll hit a strip of white T-shirt (had it happen) - other times your only chance is explosives. Sometimes they win.

John,
Crab hatch a few years back - in a boat ( I know, blasphemy for me, I've since repented) cows (30-50 LBS) rolling on the crabs - won't touch a thing. My partner says I'll show em - puts out two umbrella rigs with multiple tubes. Troll right through the rolling cows. Both rods get hit. Fish peeling wire for 15 seconds. Drop each hook-up. Reel in umbrellas and the are literally destroyed - arms broken, hooks torn off. One hook comes back with a scale the size of a quarter on the point. Couldn't stand the power of multiple cows on each rig. So ChefChris - next time troll an umbrella through those 12 inchers!

Sorry. I don't see the fun in that mindset.
If I'm standing there with my surf rig, which is moderatly heavy tackle, trying to catch 12" bass, then everything I stand for as a surf caster goes out the window.

work the edges.

yup... and worked with a bucktail behind a small feather dropper.. most times those small fish will split themselves in two to get it....I've taken some surprisingly large specimines outside the schools of rats in this manner... most people never realized those big girls were letting the micro's do all the dirty work....
