What's are some good ways to fish the rips at Monamoy? I've heard drifting sandeels on high low rigs, sluggos, yo-zuri hydros, trolling spoons. Looking for some pointers.

Ive fished those rips for years now and a couple points
1. Be careful! They can be very dangerous. Not sure where you are launching from but we usually come out of Saqutucket and head out. When you see the 3 sided ones stay away. Additionally the SW always comes up and point rip can build to a mess. The trip back home across common flats etc can get bumpy as well depending on what you are riding in.
2. Wire line, if you are comfortable with it, will put lots of fish in the boat. Parachutes, regular bucktails with pork, rubber on leadheads and umbrella rigs all work.
3. All the rips at times will hold fish. There are ones that are very popular with the charters (with good reason) but in general they all hold fish so dont be afraid to explore/move around. Find a slot in the rip where the fish are holding and go to it
4. If you arent into wire then squid shells / drifting plugs / baits back into the rip really is fun.
5. IMO Sandeels (and sometimes squid) rule out there as far as bait. In the fall we used to have really good numbers of peanuts but it hasnt seemed to be very good lately.
6. you'll have to decide whether you like trolling, sitting in a slot or finding fish to cast to, they all can be done there.
7. Teasers / small rubber can make all the difference when there are tons of fish on the tiny bait.
8. Learn the currents that produce and how they set up each rip. That really is a key as certain rips will fish better at certain times. Think temp as well.
9. Later on its a great place top run into some albies / bonito
10. I personally leave super the light tackle at home as the current is strong and I dont think its fair to the fish to p[lay them forever. Your call on that of course

I thinks thats a good start! It is a slow place to start up and there will be a week or two coming up where it really heats up with a push of big fish so don't be discouraged just yet

BTW the peach colored got striper baits really work well.

Buy a bunch of got stryper PINTAIL plastic and some jig heads and hold on. Peach and clear are great down there from my experiences.

We put MANY 30# class fish inthe boat out of all the rips.
Secret, WORMS.
Buy a flat of sand worms.
4/0 hooks
20# fluro. Water is usually gin clear out there. Anything more and we'd get nothing. usually 1 oz rubbr cores or less.
Stone horse eels usually ruled.

Alan's rubber is great out there. Pink, Red, Peach, White....all of them catch fish consitently.

Like Redlite said, bait guys drop worms, and FRESH (dead) sandeels, and live eels.

Cool place to fish, can get bumpy so be on your game.

I haven't fished out there in years because of the crowds on weekends, but we used to do pretty well with lots of different methods. There were times when only wire line jigging worked, times when only tube and worm worked and times when nothing worked, even though we could see fish holding in the rips. Probably should have tried Alan's rubber on those days.:uhuh:

There was one day about 6 or 7 years ago that we could see big fish holding near the bottom in deep water in the rips. We tried everything and weren't hooking up. About 10 other boats weren't having any luck either, trying everything from bait to trolling. We decided to take a break and eat lunch and hope the bite would turn on afterwards. As I grabbed my sandwich, I noticed the plug on my rod in the rocket launcher had gotten loose and was swinging around. I grabbed the rod and made a cast into the rip behind us. About 2 cranks with the polaris popper was all it took for big bass to nail it. My dad grabbed a rod with a popper and did the same thing. We got 6 nice fish on 6 casts with poppers and then it shut off again. We couldn't believe the bass were coming up to the surface from that deep and hitting plugs.

I guess the lesson is that if something isn't working, don't be afraid to try something else. Even if it doesn't seem like a good idea at the time, it might work.

Thanks guys for all the input. I hadn't heard of those rubber's before. How do they differ from Hogy's?

If I'm using sand eel bait, do you throw a 1 oz or so weight on it and cast/slow retrieve or do you throw a 3 oz or heavier weight on it and let it drag the bottom over the rip?

let it roll back into the rip, and drop into it. You will feel it suck it in. There are dogfish out there your have to contend with but fresh sandeels are proven killlers if thats your thing. Different bait than hogy IMO, but are great baits depends what you are looking for, but frankly any rubber bait would probably due, its just everyone has their favorites. Caught many bass on sluggos out there too.
