View Full Version : Get Well Soon Finaddict afterhours 07-05-2011, 02:00 PM hoping you heal up quickly andy. andy took a nasty spill this weekend and has leg/ankle fractures. The Dad Fisherman 07-05-2011, 02:15 PM What the......I thought he was having a Non-fishing weekend this weekend. Dude, you ain't young anymore, take it easy and heal up. Fishoholic 07-05-2011, 02:31 PM Bummer! Heal quick!! numbskull 07-05-2011, 02:50 PM Sorry. Fishing related? tattoobob 07-05-2011, 03:07 PM Wow sorry to hear this, Get well soon Andy blondterror 07-05-2011, 03:14 PM Hope you heal quickly so you are ready for the fall run... Rockport24 07-05-2011, 03:18 PM that's terrible! get well soon Andy nightfighter 07-05-2011, 03:27 PM That sucks.... Andy, check in when things settle into your rehabbing.... Finaddict 07-05-2011, 04:01 PM Thanks everyone ... it's a Pilon fracture ... pronounced ... Pee-lon ... bad, multiple fractures to the distal tibula in my left leg ... was walking down a boat ramp early in the morning, the ramp had dew on it, one leg went up, the other stayed ... and the rest is history ... my doctor was really surprised at the scope of damage to that part of my leg ... I have to go back for an X-Ray once a week for three weeks to ensure it's healing properly, and not getting worse. He gave me a boot rather than a cast, so I can take it off in the shower ... but have to shower on a shower seat ... little uneasy about removing my splint, but it's better than what I did this morning for getting clean ... filled the tub, got on my knees and dunked headfirst and washed top half, then washed the right leg, but never touched the left ... so it will be nice to get that thing washed. My goal is to get it stronger than ever before, may help with bounding over the rocks ... but a potential side effect of a pilon fracture down the road is post-traumatic arthritis ... which I am not looking forward to. Finaddict 07-05-2011, 04:04 PM Bob ... while sitting in the ER in Westerly, RI, I was thinking about your injury out on Block ... figured you had a similar injury, correct? Although I didn't spill over a cliff:smash: vineyardblues 07-05-2011, 04:16 PM Ouch and another OUCH Hope you get back to fishing as soon as your able , had one of them boot thingy on for a long time myself ...... Regards VB Finaddict 07-05-2011, 04:33 PM It is now 5:33 p.m. ET ... I am counting down the seconds to 7:10 p.m. ET ... when I get to take my next round of pain killers ... the doctor said they typically only last 4 hours ... but I am on a 6 hour rotation ... this is when I start counting the minutes and seconds ... tattoobob 07-05-2011, 04:33 PM Bob ... while sitting in the ER in Westerly, RI, I was thinking about your injury out on Block ... figured you had a similar injury, correct? Although I didn't spill over a cliff:smash: Sounds the same as mine but mine was just a fracture no a clean break, and it still gets sore from time to time, but the same thing happened my right foot stayed while the rest of my body took off down the cliff Finaddict 07-05-2011, 04:35 PM Bob, is it strong though? I want to ensure mine grows back as strong if not stronger than it was before ... will to drink some kind of steriod laced milk I think ... tattoobob 07-05-2011, 04:38 PM Ya it's just as strong as it was, I think I have some kind of arthritis in it Finaddict 07-05-2011, 04:46 PM I just realized the boot he put on today is really, really, really uncomfortable ... did you find the same? I guess you got through it? Fishoholic 07-05-2011, 04:47 PM Thanks everyone ... it's a Pilon fracture ... pronounced ... Getting any hardware? When I broke mine I got a 9" plate and a bunch of screws. It gets sore from time to time. When you can and the Dr. okays it.. stretch it out frequently. My ankle got really stiff while I was laid up. Also one calf is substantially large than the other. Good luck! And don't worry the pain goes away soon! spinncognito 07-05-2011, 06:15 PM Hey Andy, I can grab a wheelchair from work and you could easily fish from the pier.... just saying Sorry about your accident. Those pain pills can be addictive so stop as soon as yoyr body lets you! Raven 07-05-2011, 06:33 PM I just realized the boot he put on today is really, really, really uncomfortable ... did you find the same? I guess you got through it? thats due to swelling Andy ...and i know exactly what your going thru...So Sorry to hear of your Mishap... i truely think it's time for you to buy a boat or a kayak . see if you can loosen the boot.... without de-moblizing the ankle. meaning the Doc wants it imobilized to heal but you may need some room to breathe down there or your circulation gets cut off....from swelling i remember when i had a cast and my dog was "so glad to see me" she body slammed my cast with a side ways collision... Holy Moly! It swelled up and the pain was as bad as having a kidney stone which is comparable to a woman having a baby. anyways back to you.... get your swelling down by getting that foot way elevated higher than your torso and take some advil because that reduces swelling much MUCH better than percs... percs will make ya "crazy angry and volitile" in some cases and/ or make you constipated too.... so take them only as long as you need to because they are very addicting.not good 4ya ! also: take an old pair of sweat pants or the sleaves of an old sweat shirt and cut them to make "crutch wraps" for extra cushion ! jimmy z 07-05-2011, 06:58 PM I am sorry to hear this. I will keep you in my prayers for a quick healing. ProfessorM 07-05-2011, 07:25 PM sorry Andy. Get well soon Finaddict 07-05-2011, 08:45 PM Thanks everyone for the wishes and wisdom ... but a few things ... How do you know if you don't need the percoset any more? I know they are addictive, have only been taking them since Sunday morning, but within an hour of the time to take another, my leg is hurting like crazy ... so I take another ... but I am counting the seconds until my next one. I am also taking 600 mg ibuprofen ... but pretty much only twice a day, as they are every eight hours and only wih a meal, so I take one at breakfast and dinner ... but it doesn't have the same effect as the percoset ... I was also shocked at the doctor's response today, he did not sugar coat it at all ... said, it was going to be a long road to recovery. Thanks again everyone for the kind words and advice. Sundowner 07-05-2011, 09:00 PM also sorry to hear this happen to a fellow fisher. make sure to follow the rehab no matter how much it hurts, push yourself, and at other times take the boot off and stretch it to that sharp pain hits, and keep doin reps like that. Ice every time you work it. good luck Fisherwoman 07-06-2011, 07:37 AM Hey Andy, sorry to hear about your leg, you take care of yourself, I will say a little healing prayer for you so you can get back at the fishing soon If the percoset are not working, call you doctor and ask him to increase the perscription or ask if there is something else you can take that may work better. Hang in there buddy hope you have a speedy recovery. Raven 07-06-2011, 07:56 AM not to burst your Bubble of Hope my friend but i never recovered.... i was having to walk up roofs backwards as i lost some dorsiflection in the ANKLE so i quit that work.... i cannot stress enough for you to find a pysical therapy center with a wading pool because then (when your ready mind you)PT's will know) you can begin to put a "demand on your ankle" to un-swell and re-gain strength @ half your body weight being in the pool. it's what helped me the most. my break was the worst they had ever seen my determination and work effort/recovery was exceptional. you have to factor in the arthritic changes coming Andy, as others have mentioned so (get your handicapped placard) fill out the form from your Doctor have him sign it (just do it) correction:Actually you get it from the registry of motor vehicles (sorry my bad) concrete will be your enemy in the future 5-10 years from now you'll be able to handle it in the AM after your sleeptime rest but your ANKLE will soon become the BOSS .... of course everyone heals differently and you MAY have a complete recovery...only time will tell... plan on the worst and go for the best. the spandex brace that has velcro wraps are very awesome to use and give you more endurance when your ready for them buy at least two ...one to wear and one to wash. keep in mind though that your good foot and hip will take over and get real sore from carrying the LOAD because unconsciously you will be standing like a stork or continuously shifting your weight to the stronger side so don't over do it and never be hopping! Finaddict 07-06-2011, 10:46 AM Thanks Craig ... will pay attention to that ... I probably wont be ready for PT for another three weeks, as my doctor wants me to stay home for the most part for two to three weeks. Jules, thanks for the wishes ... but please, use all the energy you have for yourself and Captain Bill ... while my pain and agony are not good ... I am still sending Ts&Ps to the both of you ... plus me ... but thanks. Interesting, I noticed that my toes on my left foot, and my knee are not aligned ... it seems like it was set with the toes facing 10 oclock on the clock dial, while my knee is straight ... and when I move my toes to 12 oclock on the dial, my knee is pointing to the 2 oclock position. I called the nurse at my doctor's office, she said the doctor wasn't concerned because he will be looking at it on Tuesday ... but it's not his leg ... oh well. Thanks again to everyone. BigFish 07-06-2011, 10:47 AM Feel better Andy!!:) The Dad Fisherman 07-06-2011, 11:52 AM the doctor said they typically only last 4 hours ... but I am on a 6 hour rotation ... this is when I start counting the minutes and seconds ... have only been taking them since Sunday morning, but within an hour of the time to take another, my leg is hurting like crazy ... so I take another ... but I am counting the seconds until my next one. is it within an hour of the 4 hours you are supposed to take them....or within the six hours you are telling yourself to take them? If the latter....take them every 4 hours as directed. get through the pain and then we can send you to Detox if you run into any problems :hihi: Raven 07-06-2011, 01:40 PM do NOT drink any alcohol while on pain meds i forgot one day.... had some wiskey and OJ and the hangover the next day was 15 years ago now i STILL remember it Finaddict 07-06-2011, 03:40 PM yeah, I don't drink ... but do take the pills religously ... with the exception of last night, wound up sleeping two hours past my pill time ...which didn't matter, it was nice to get a night of sleep with only four to six wake-ups (along with a few times laying around) rather than four to six 10-minute naps, which happened the previous two or three nights. hopefully I will be sawing wood in no time for the entire night I hope Raven 07-06-2011, 04:27 PM vitamin C speeds it up.... :uhuh: Finaddict 07-06-2011, 09:49 PM Thanks Craig ... I am a lover of vitamin C ... ... now tomorrow I get a friend to help me put the A.C. in, which I had been holding off on ... tonight is blistering in my home, two window fans and still hot and sweaty ... I wonder if the percocet has anything to do with it ... Raven 07-07-2011, 05:01 AM Thanks Craig ... I am a lover of vitamin C ... ... now tomorrow I get a friend to help me put the A.C. in, which I had been holding off on ... tonight is blistering in my home, two window fans and still hot and sweaty ... I wonder if the percocet has anything to do with it ... doubtful.... but the skin is your biggest elimination organ so it could be trying to shed the residue from the pain meds after thought: Lime aid cleans out your Liver makes your urine crystal clear i've found. Pete F. 07-07-2011, 05:38 AM Thats no way to spend the summer, but it won't last forever get well soon. Edge Sportfish 07-07-2011, 01:47 PM Sorry for your trouble Andy. Let's look at the underlying issue that nobody's talking about for a minute- NO FISHING?!! Heal fast brother- Raven 07-07-2011, 02:20 PM you never mentioned which foot Bro? left is better than right for driving to therapy so which is it...? and did your buddy show up and install the AC? Slingah 07-07-2011, 04:26 PM what a bummer! best of luck with the recovery Andy..... Finaddict 07-08-2011, 08:08 PM Thanks guys for the continued support ... and George, you are right, missing fishing is bumming me out ... Craig, it's my lower left leg - the tibula (inside bone) and fibula (outside bone) ... the thing that I still have not figured out is why none of the doctors that have seen me have given much consideration to the break on the fibula up toward my knee, as it's not a load bearing break ... it still hurts and is not even covered by the boot ... I will have to bring it up with him on Tuesday. Swimmer 07-08-2011, 08:52 PM Good luck Andy, heal quickly. Raven 07-09-2011, 04:48 AM this plant grows wild near the ocean but often goes over looked horses love to eat it in the days of OLDE it was often used to speed healing because of its high levels of allantoin a substancce our body's make and it is like BONE glue... man in the old days it was called "KNIT bone" because of how fast it mended breaks. Finaddict 07-09-2011, 11:28 AM Thanks Craig, I will check at the local health food store ... but if my foot is not set right, may want to wait until I see the doctor ... as much as I want this healed, I am still leery that he did not set my foot correctly and don't want to have it heal up in the wrong direction ... that is my biggest fear right now. Raven 07-09-2011, 01:21 PM oh yeah! be LEARY, be very leary they have allot of malpractice insurance for a reason Tagger 07-09-2011, 01:50 PM Sorry to hear this Andy ... One of the worse things I've ever seen was you doing a face plant into a boulder down the canal . Second only to Tattoo Bob doing a cartwheel off a cliff on Block Island .. You 2 should never fish together .. Get Well soon .. Finaddict 07-09-2011, 02:47 PM Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. :rotf2: - Eddie that is funny ... but, typically when Bob and I fish together, we usually find good fishing ... however, was that face plant really that nasty looking? ... I do remember the faces of all you guys up on the path when I asked you if it was more than a scratch ... you all made a nasty face and reared back ... it was quite humorous ... vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
