My wife and I are in the intial stages of putting a trip together by rail from Chicago to Glacier National Park in Montana. Would be next summer for our 30th anniversary. Anyone here done this? Looking for advice/suggestions on what not to miss at the park and/or places to stay.

Last time I was there we just camped and hiked. Nice scenery and driving the Road to the Sun is really worth it. If you don't have a car I'd think they would have a bus or some tour that goes up there.

If you can go across the border to Waterton for a hike and have High Tea at the Prince of Wales hotel.

Dennis - Sounds like a great plan. I've been in the area a couple of times to ski the Big Mountain, staying in Whitefish, a pretty cool town. My only recollection of the Park is driving through it in whiteout conditions at night enroute to Canada. Thankfully, there are reflectors all along the roadside. Beautiful country!

very jealous Dennis. Luv rail travel. Have not done that one but please take lots of pics and post them.

i think it would be chlostrophobic for me personally
for the smaller ones
so i'd rather drive and control where and when i stop.

I stayed in Glacier with the family 2 years ago. We stayed at the big gorgeous lodge right in the park. Request a room facing out back....amazing views of the rockies. Don't miss "going to the sun" road. Up and over the middle of the park, over 10,000 ft I think. Hike to iceberg lake. A good 2-3 hours each way but an ice cold lake, even in July with ice dripping in awaits you. We saw a grizzly, moose, elk, ram sheep and even marmots. I've been to almost all our national parks and this is def one of my very favorites.

Did that train trip with my wife and kids. its a bit long but great views. make sure you go to the Canadian side of the park. I stayed here
