View Full Version : Canyon Trip
clcharette 07-18-2011, 07:37 PM Got an invite to head out to the canyon Saturday and Sunday and off Matt and I left at 0430 from New Bedford Harbor with my Buddy Bill and a few of his friends. 5 hrs later we set up at the Tails and begin our troll for the day heading toward the break at West Atlantis. We managed to put a few yellows in the boat but not at the rate that we wanted so the captain had us real in and he took off for West Atlantis. Definitely the right choice as we picked away at them all day with a great bite going off late afternoon where we tripled up on monster yellows only to lose one but managed to get two in the boat that dressed out with heads off at 80 lbs each. Did not fish the night bite as I and the rest of the crew needed to catch up on some rest. Back to the troll at 0400 Sunday and immediatley get tight. Guess we should of woke up earlier. Picked away at a few more and pulled the plug at 0900 with weather getting sporting and not much room left in the fish boxes.
clcharette 07-18-2011, 08:05 PM I have additional photos as well and will try to get them up.

We hit the high flyers while on the troll but only managed to get one hit from a mahi, lost it alongside the boat. Awesome fish, colors were amazing, looked like one of those green glow sticks you give the kids on the fourth of july. Heard a guy lose some rigs to wahoo but we didn't get hit. One boat within 200 yards of us hooked a marlin and released it at the boat with an estimated weight of 550 lbs. No albacore. We additionally caught a couple dozen skippys, not much fun on a 50 but they sure keep the crew busy.

We originally had a crew scheduled to go with Bill on his boat but at the last minute one of the guys got sick. Another boat alongside his only had a father son team and was looking for a crew. The boat was owned by Captain Jorge, a great guy and friends of Bill. The boat was a 38 Harris handled the seas ok, wet boat but a little quicker with twin screws.
harritchate 07-19-2011, 09:15 PM awesome fish, I was at the tails Saturday. Only Mahi for us, couldnt buy a YT if we wanted. We wanted to head to W Atlantis but this was our first trip in my friends boat and didnt know how much we could push it ( we were easily the smallest boat in the mix and a center console at that) got home with just under 1/2 tank of gas and now we know how far we can push it.
I cant wait to get out there again

harritchate 07-22-2011, 05:15 PM 2390 Vector CC with a ETec 250
handles the water great, but we need a boat stretcher to make this a habitual trip...
Typhoon 07-25-2011, 06:12 AM You guys too a 23 Hydra sports to the canyons? wow
