So went to the specialist at the Boston University Medical Center yesterday ... I am going under the knife tomorrow mid day for my leg ... they are installing a bunch of plates and pins to keep my leg together.

The doctor said I will be in a cast for three months, and that it is unlikely I will make the season and that fishing from the rocks and sand is out of the question. I provided him with every possible scenario I could think of ...:wall: ... to see if I could wrangle a fishing trip, but the same answer kept coming back ... NO.

That said ... Spincognito if you can get a wheelchair sometime in the late Sept/early Oct ... maybe I can fish somewhere ... or I will have to heal extra fast so I can try to catch the tail end of the season ... or I will have to hire four to five guys to carry me around on a platform to enable me to cast and reel in the fish, and have a runner to unhook them.

One question for any of you guys ... the nurse stressed for me not to bring any valuables into the hospital, even my iPod, as it could easily get taken while I am asleep or by someone who knows that I wont be able to get around ... as I was hoping to bring my BlackBerry - both my personal and work - so I could keep on top of work while hanging around recovering, and keeping in touch, etc. from the hospital ... but is theft really a big concern in hospitals these days? Do I really leave everything behind? It's only two or three days, but hate being cut off like that.

Even though I am disappointed about missing the season, will be in a cast for three months, can't take my daughter biking - she's been a complete angel to date waiting on her father - life is still good, as I am at a good hospital, great surgeons, have a beautiful and angelic daughter, good family and friends, a great job with a phenomenal boss ... so life is good, just wish I could participate somewhat more during this stretch.

I work at UMASS and every person has a laptop in his / her bed :)
We have free WIFI and they also give out loaner laptop's
Not sure what she is trying to tell you ....

Don't take anything into the hospital. your rooms are open and things disappear.

I kept my cellphone with me but that was it, I kept it under the pillow for 3 days.

Some units will not allow communication devices at all.

Thanks guys - I have a feeling they are painting the worse case scenario, similar to my recovery ... I guess to CYA ... but VB, the doctor didn't think it was a big deal, just the staff advising me on how to prep, etc.

This includes the nurse yesterday and the individual who called me back from the doctor's office to provide me with the time of my surgery, etc. But I would hate to lose something if I can avoid it, especially work hardware. Maybe I can keep my BB and my iPod in my pockets.

Maybe I won't be in shape to work on Friday, but would like to if I could ... as there is a lot going on and I'd like to carry my share of the load.

Maybe you could rig something like Tred Barta did when he went sailfish fishing last year.
(They had to secure the wheelchair to the deck, "just in case")

There's always an alternative to what you want to do and it's usually what you're ALLOWED to do. I had knee surgery a few years back in Sept. and I was worried I'd lose out on the entire fall run.
I did the PT and was able to do a little by late Oct.

Luckily I didn't push myself too far. Since I fish pretty much year round, I did have something to look forward to after striper season passed.
You too will have something to look forward to, be it fishing or just spending quality time with your family. It's all GOOD!

good luck Andy. Health is more important. There is always next year, it's just fishing.

You do your part for the next month and a half... Then we'll see where you are. Should be able to navigate your way around my 20' CC, no? As I said, get done what has to be done, the rest will fall into place.

that leg is gonna get thrashed when your back up
and full of activities energy so you have to concentrate on
getting the best healing conditions when you finally get home.

trouble is.... you start feeling all better and then you go wild!
take it slow and methodical... nice and EASY.

Yeah thanks everyone ... I appreciate the words ... I will take it easy and focus on the healing rather on what I am missing.

Also figured a day or two out of work will be okay, so will leave all that stuff behind as well and relax.

I have four pins a metal plate and some dead guys bone holding my knee together. Tibial plateau. Three months they said I'd be on crutches. I was playing B-Ball in about 7 weeks. Hopefully you will have a speedy recovery as well. Stay positive and don't be afraid to use it when you feel strong enough.

two other thoughts....

your leg muscle will probably atrophy a bit
don't let it get ya down! as it'll come right back :uhuh:

you might wanna ask for a copy of the xray
showing the metal plating...........

so when ya go to a court room or
through airport security you can show
them the xray before hand when they go to
do the metal scanning

Hey Pal, we don't know one another, but I wish you the best and I will hope for a speedy recovery.

I am an RN and I work in a large hospital, lots of people in and out of rooms. I would say leave your valuables at home. Bad enough being laid up, but getting ripped off would really be a pisser on top of it all.

Hope your home quickly. Drink the PT Kool-Aid, but don't overdo it. Working hard with the therapist will pay dividends down the road.

Been there, done that, it's not fun. Get well soon!

Bring your phone, just don't leave it laying around. Bring a laptop if you got one but consider a laptop lock.

Get better! Just keep in mind that we are in the summer doldrums and it's not prime time. You may be able to fish the fall run. Think positively.

You're right about the atrophy thing. Happens fast. It'll come back slowly, but it will improve.

yes well it will continue so don't dispair. my big scottish (troll )
calf muscles have never been stronger....yet when i had my cast taken off
it literally made me cry because of how feeble it looked in comparison having
had no tactile sensory imput...for months

walking is technically falling forward with each leg and foot and the
overcoming of gravity pulling you downward,,, which is why in outer space
keeping muscle tone is so difficult... so don't let it bother you
...they'll soon be a matched pair once again
(you will remember)

after the Physical therapists from hell get done with you

i pulled my john boat out of the van on crutches
and went rain fishin with my cast on...
despite "Doctors orders"

i am and always "will be" a REBEL
and defy authority...
a non conformist at heart

i took an extreme risk tho...........
so , it wasn't to smart thinking back
but i wore my heavy life preserver
and never took it off

i had tall double trash bags duct taped on
keeping my cast nice and dry :uhuh:
works well in the shower too

Good luck with the surgery Andy, I know a big boat we can get you out to play on when you get better, hang in there and heal up right. I will say a prayer for your speedy recovery.
