View Full Version : Flies everywhere !
Raider Ronnie 07-25-2011, 06:45 AM Flies everywhere !
They are everywhere !
Doing bass charters in Boston harbor the past 3 weeks they are all over my boat, and biting !
Offshore trips to Stellwagen, same story , though yesterday they seemed more like house flies than horse flies.
I know my boat could use a good cleaning but every boat out I ask the same story.
Anyone know why ?
And more important anyone know how to get rid of them.
Some kind of bug spray or bomb ?
Gonna ask a friend who does exterminating.
BigFish 07-25-2011, 06:54 AM Yeah seeing the same be it in the yak or in my back yard.....they were driving me bonkers yesterday!!!!:fury:
JohnR 07-25-2011, 06:54 AM I was doing work at a client's, in their driveway, thought I was in a a horror movie with so many flying swarms.
teezer 07-25-2011, 07:33 AM I was at Stellwagon also and had a terrible time with the bitting flies also. Where did they come from so far offshore?:fury:
bassballer 07-25-2011, 08:03 AM We were shark fishing about 12-14 miles off Newport sunday a.m. The flies were brutal. Biting me everywhere. I got to be a serious issue after a couple hours.
JackK 07-25-2011, 08:34 AM I noticed them two weeks ago on Jeffreys and Middle bank. Looked just like houseflies, but bit. Showed up around 10 every morning. Vicious little things... Only thing that would take care of them was lots of flypaper.
I was told they're called chum flies.
bassballer 07-25-2011, 08:44 AM I was told they're called chum flies.
Kev, that wouldve made sense sunday.
mf'ers have infiltrated point jude area too. they look harmless enough until they unleash their brutal venom!
Hookedagain 07-25-2011, 09:07 AM I'm about a 1/4 mile from the river and have an uncontrollable fly problem. Didn't know if it had anything to do with the water. Put out fly paper and it has 40 flies in 30 min. What else would draw these suckers in? I actually searched for a dead animal under the deck or something like that....nothing. Puzzled!!
nightfighter 07-25-2011, 09:27 AM When the early AM storm came through, I put my foul weather pants on. Realized I was not getting them biting my legs and ankles when the storm passed, so left them on. Was happier being a little warm than getting bitten... Lots of talk about them on the radio....
Raider Ronnie 07-25-2011, 09:42 AM So no one got a cure ?
Got an offshore tuna & ground fish trip sat with guys that been out with me last 5 years.
Great guys but the kind of group that brings bottles of hand sanitizers and their own towels for when they touch a fish.
The flies should really go over well ! :smash:
I was planning to anchor up and bait fish for the ground fish.
Got Stripers 07-25-2011, 11:40 AM I was hedge trimming yesterday and even with bug spray, I was getting nailed every couple minutes and those damn little bastards aren't easy to kill. I don't ever remember them being like this on land, sure I've dealt with them on the boat for years, but I can't recall them being this bad miles from shore.
bassballer 07-25-2011, 12:05 PM Just talked to a guy that said theres usually no issue until you get blood on the boat. Said he was fishing saturday and as soon as some blood got on the deck there were a hundred flies swarming.
Raven 07-25-2011, 01:38 PM has to be weather related
Mike J. 07-25-2011, 02:02 PM I have been told Tangerauy (GIN) rubbed on your skin will help alot with greenhead flies??? I have never tried it.
Rob Rockcrawler 07-25-2011, 03:20 PM They were everywhere on LIS sunday. I lost a couple quality fish due to trying to kick them off my legs while fighting a fish. Bug spray didnt work, and the little buggers would hunker down on the motor and rails and hang on for dear life going between spots. The only good thing about em is they are pretty slow fliers.
tattoobob 07-25-2011, 04:00 PM It has everything to do with "The Rapture" that is coming
PRBuzz 07-25-2011, 04:17 PM RR: hang these from the ceiling! :rotf2:
Sweetwater 07-25-2011, 04:22 PM Out on Stellwagen on Sunday and the biting flies were terrible. I thought they were breeding on my boat somewhere and was ready to get a "bug bomb" and sanitize the boat. Glad to hear, I think, that this was just my problem. :)
Raven 07-25-2011, 04:22 PM they call them bluebottle flies around the stables
and yes those hanging strips are the only thing that works
thefishingfreak 07-25-2011, 04:30 PM They can't bite thru the grundens so we left them on and long sleves

JackK 07-25-2011, 04:57 PM They do bite through socks though.
PRBuzz 07-25-2011, 05:11 PM Didn't notice any today on Stellwagon! At least the biting variety.

.
My Son in law wears the propane Thermacell when bear hunting in
Canada. Swears by it. Says they would carry him off without it.
Cabelas has them.
I've found Cutter Advanced the best for green flys fishing
the beaches and back bays.
If fish blood is attracting them I would try a Jomax/Bleach mix in a small
sprayer in the fish box and sorrounding areas, then rinse good.
clambo 07-25-2011, 06:49 PM Try using Bens ,comes in an orange bottle. 100% deet keeps all bugs off. Some people say it kills ya liver. As long as the bugs go first i'm cool with it!
Rappin Mikey 07-25-2011, 08:28 PM It was like a mass exodus off of Rce Point last night after 6pm. They were a pain all day but got rediculous @ 6. I think thry are stable flies. If you notice, they tend to go for the ankles, where horses and cattle would not be able to use there tails to knock them away. That is scary trhey were so far off shore.
Speedy Too 07-26-2011, 06:39 AM They were terrible on the bank last Sunday.....never realy bite just a PIA from the knees down.
UserRemoved 07-26-2011, 06:50 AM Those are called SNOT flies...cuz it's SNOT fun fishing when those things are biting like that LOL

robc22 07-26-2011, 08:32 AM The house fly's have been very bad this year.....driving me nuts.......those flys offshore bury there eggs and spawn out of whale poop.....that's why they are the worst when you are on the whale(tuna) grounds...........
UserRemoved 07-26-2011, 09:04 AM Well then they're #^&#^&#^&#^& flies ;)

Dick Durand 07-26-2011, 09:49 AM They do bite through socks though.
That they do. The fly problem is pervasive. While fluking out of Pt. Judith the other day, they were all over the boat and biting our ankles. At one point I knew I wasn't the only boat pestered when someone over the radio issued a general complaint about the fly inundation.
OLD GOAT 07-26-2011, 11:08 AM Sounds like deer flies to me. Don't wear dark colors or blue.
They should start to go away after the August full moon.
There so thick down Monomy that they can cary a small child away
OLD GOAT 07-26-2011, 11:09 AM Shorty boots and oil skins help alot

Boat flies don't count.

if those are them, a dude showed me a trick for them. Get a bright Blue Bucket and coat it w/ something really sticky. They can't lay off the color blue and when they land on it.....they're stuck.
Guy showed me how it worked and I'd say in 2 minutes max he had to have at least 40 of the fuggers stuck to the bucket

These?
Definitely not those- at least the ones that savaged me. I think Mikey is right that they're stable flies.

Looked identical to a housefly, except with a sharp pointy bit for a mouth. And RR is right, they were slow and easy to kill, but there was no end to 'em
MakoMike 07-27-2011, 11:30 AM No problem with flies off of Pt. Judith yesterday. I only noticed one on the boat all day.
Rappin Mikey 07-27-2011, 11:37 AM Definitely not deer, horse, or greenheads. I think those lil basstages are fast though. They look like a tiny housefly. I heard they laid down a bit at Race PT. Yesterday. Maybe it had something to do with that crazy heat wave. It strikes me odd that everyone in such a wide spread area from north to south and land to sea had such an issue with them on Sunday?? Two tornados in Western MA this year as well. Something funky is going down.
