Good Morning Everyone but I would not have believed it if I wasn't there to witness this spectacular catch tonight at the breachway. A buddy of mine from work came over from CT to fish here tonight and ended up catcatching a 49" Red Drum from the end of the breach on bunker. We are going to weigh it in the morning on a certified scale for a possible state record. Will keep you all posted on the weight and the out come of the record catch.
But really. What is a red drum doing up here. Maybe thats why everything is so screwy this year. We're getting invaded by southern species now. :smash:

time to start chumming off the ends of the breachways with pogie chunks and bring these southern fish in. must have been an awesome fight...

Caught like 16 of them in the canal this year. Pretty cool!!!! Can't wait to see the pics.

Back in the 1800s drum (big ones!) were a commercially viable fish in both LI Sound and in RI Sound. So this is not unprecedented but it sure is a cool catch! Now if the squeteague would just follow them back up here.....

Used to love catching them when I lived in TX.Redfish are damn good eating too!

Wouldn't be surprised if someone were to catch a Speck or a Croaker.

Wow that is impressive, Cobia, tarpon, inshore dolphin, now red drum...who says there is no benefit to global warming.

I hope this continues, we need more diversity in our fishing up here.

don't forget the 50# sturgeon caught at the mouth of the Merrimack this year,


not to be a buzz kill because its a awesome catch, its not listed on the RI records (http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bnatres/fishwild/records.htm#saltwater).

Dont you see some every year? There's usually a flurry of them each year in LI Sound. Some are caught on the north fork of LI annually.

Was it a red drum or a black drum? Black drum are not uncommon in our waters, several are caught every year off Montauk. Spanish Macks are also not uncommon.

Imagine how cool that would be to fight a fish that powerful, get it in close, see it roll and think..........WTH!

Thing probably ruined him.. You'd have to catch an 80lb bass to pull as hard as that bull! Congrats.. Truly awesome catch no matter where you are.

Anymore details on the story behind this fish? How did it fight? How long did it take to bring it in? Did your friend chit himself when he realized what he caught? thanks

If you look at the NYS marine fishing regs, you'll see that NY still has bag/size limits for red drum on the books, so obviously, they were plentiful enough for regs at one time.

Spanish mackerel used to very common this time of the year at the Vineyard, at least when I went regularly during the 80s and 90s.

Awesome! Now if I could only get some Gloucester albies :)
