No one really talks about the SS anymore it seems, but they were a big hit when they first came out. I fish the 10ft MH 2-6oz as my all around go to rod and I love it. I've never caught any monsters on it, but I've beat a bunch of fish in the 28-30lb range in running current in the canal fairly easily with it. I know bigger fish are a different story though. The ratings are accurate too, I have no problem throwing(or lobbing) a big shad out there. Fairly easy to work a pencil with and will even throw lighter plugs like redfins extremely well. I do however remember Mike P saying he's seen a lot of SSs blow up at the Ditch. I blew one up but it was because I was frantically casting pencils at breaking fish when I hooked my plug and jig bag that I had left on the rock behind me :wall:

So do people still like their Super Surfs?

I also beat the hell out of mine. not intentionally though. I've fallen and thrown the rod in the process and so far so good(fingers crossed). Banged the blank up trying to store the rod. frequently fighting good size fish in strong current will certainly wear on the rod, that's for sure. Only thing I've noticed about the 2 SSs I've owned is that the cork tape won't last more than a season. But that's not a big deal to me.

Anyone else love/hate their Super Surfs?

I love my 11' one piece. I keep my eyes out for the one you have. Should have pulled the trigger on the one Mike P was selling. I love how fast it recovers after i launch a plug, great casting machine with a great power curve. I love feeling the blank bend all the way to the reel seat when fighting a fish. The only thing i dont like about the rods is the price tag, the retail on them is outrageous.

Most of the breakage that I've seen has been on the 11' one piece MH model. They snap about a foot above the reel seat. I just saw another one fail there about 3 weeks ago. Lamiglas is aware of this and says they're addressing it.

The 10' MH is as solid as a rock, though.

All in all, I still prefer the XRA line of rods. I sold both of my Super Surfs. I had way too many rods, and it was time to thin the forest.

Rob, what are they going for now? When I bought mine a few years back it was on sale at M&D's for around 280 I believe. I thought that was a fair price and would pay it again. My old go to rod was a G Loomis so that is fairly cheap compared to what GL charges for their factory rods( the old GL's were great rods though, with a nice warranty).

thanks for your feedback. That gives me just a little more added confidence in my 10 footer. confidence is always good :) that's weird though, when I broke my rod when I hooked my bag it snapped in the same place....

11' one piece according to Lami's web site is 540.00. Not that anyone pays MSRP but that is what they are asking. Rob, your rod is listed at 510.00.

holy chit  For that kind of money I would probably go with one of the newer rods ( Century) or have two GSB120 1m's made with no bells and whistles. I love my SS but I think the only way I'll be getting another one would be if mine blew up and Lami was willing to replace it.

I have a SSU 120mh. It is a great rod and seems very tough. I abused it pretty hard for 2 years without any issues. I found I preferred it to the 1205 and the Kennedy Fisher 8740 I own, but not to the GSB1321M 11 foot blank I use now for the same purposes.

As Mike points out, there were breakage issues in the 120M (near the tip) and 132MH(near the butt)....apparently because of wall thickness variation (ie manufacturing fault). Reportedly that has been corrected and the blank strengthened. I have not heard of issues with the MH 10 foot model. Either way, Lami seems to have shot themselves in the foot with this series and their reputation taken a beating because of it.

Numby, you must be a fan of the SSU if you prefer it over the kennedy fisher. those were some sweet rods. thanks for your feedback...

I had my 120 1MH for 4 seasons, and just sold it to a buddy of TO's this past spring. It's a very strong rod. I didn't care for the NGC guide layout, though. It seemed to me to be very "reel-sensitive" in that it liked some spools better than others. I found that it threw a lot better with a big spool like an Emblem Pro 5500 than a Shimano 8000 spool.

The only one that I ever saw break caught a bush on the back-swing and snapped on the cast. That will happen with any rod. I felt that it was an honest 2-6 rod. Maybe someday I'll pick up a blank and have it built with a different guide lay-out. I really do like it as a Canal jigging blank. But, I still have an older All Star 1208 which I like even better than the SSU, and that will probably be the next one to have changed over to a better guide lay-out.

You're talking about the GSB120 1M, right? People toss big shads with it so I would also say it's an honest 2-6 as well. I don't own one personally, but I've had my hands all over TO's and Cheferson's  and it feels very similar to the SSU. wasn't there a rumor going around before that the SSU was built on the 120 1m blank?

Bart, I have the same rod and and have no problems with for the 2 years I've owned it. So far the biggest fish I've landed with it was a 35.9 # Striper and it whooped the fish no problem.

I have the ssu1201m, fantastic rod. The breakage issues I hear about had me nervous for a bit, but I have wailed on it at this point and it keeps coming back for more. I have no problem fishing 3/4 bucktails up to a bm cowboy or 40. I got the blank for something crazy like $130? when M&Ds was blowing out blanks a couple springs ago :D

I have to 11' MH SSU's. Both work well, casting and retrieving with a load going both ways. I have five arra's that I used under various conditions also. 11' SSU's are more sensitive. I broke one of ten inches up from the bottom falling with it. I repaired it and it works as well as before.

thanks for your feedback on the 11ft'er. curious, what do you have paired with that rod? Are you launching pencils with it?

I either have a 706 or 704 on my 10ft'er depending on which one is running smoother that day, lol. This is an ideal set-up for trying to reach breaking fish in the canal, not. but it gets the job done in that regard. I really like it for fishing big plugs and big eels in the RI surf. had a VS 250 on it at one point and it felt great, but the reel ended up being a dud. went back to my workhorses and love this combo...

I use a vs 200 on my 11' but also use a EmPro on it when i fish the canal. It launches with the Empro, and is just fine with the 200. However, i would like to have a 250 hanging on it instead, it doesnt balance all that well with the 200, but balance is over rated in my opinion.

I agree about balance. I used to fish a 704 on a GLoomis 1084. same with a 9ft factory breakaway. not very comfortable to fish but great combos for rigged slug-gos once your wrist get used to the abuse...

I have a ssu1321mh that I built myself with LCSG guides. It will always be a very very special rod to me as BS4SHORE talked me into it and hooked me up on the blank. I put allot of time into this build and this rod absolutely launches. It is so fun to just let it rip. I do find though that it is a bit tough to control. Say I have ten casts, 6 might be the best of my life, 3 just ok and then 1 will be absolutely terrible.

The summer after I made it, I had it out on the Vineyard at Wasque. Bluefish every single cast while others struggled a bit. For me this rod and setup can give me that little bit of extra distance and it is very fun to fish with.

Sometimes I feel weird about fishing it as it is tied to so many memories I have of Bob, but then again he would want it to be fished as hard as it could.

 According to Van Staal's specs, there's only a half ounce difference in weight between the 200 and 250. I also own both and you couldn't tell them apart if you picked them up blindfolded.
