was out this am for a couple hours of darkness and first light fishing. as i was walking to my truck i saw some flashing lights up on the road and assumed my truck was getting towed. turns out it was an ambulance and fire truck. about 4 guys were trying to get their friend out of the water for 45 minutes and could not so they call 911. Authorities arrived and they were able to save him. tossed him in the ambulance and took him to the hospital.

as i was packing up i had to jump the mini van they came in because they left their headlights on. i got the whole story then in broken english. 5 guys fishing from 9 pm to 5 am last night. all of them in jeans, sneakers, and no shirts. the victim was going to pull a fish out of the water and slipped in, got sucked out, then banged up against the rocks repeatedly for 45 minutes. they all thought he died.

not prepared at all for those conditions. look for a report in the marblehead police log.

Thank God he wasn't wearing waders . Some of these places people are fishing their better off not owning a pair of waders.

they must be the ghosts i think i see at night in the caves when i'm really tired walking back to the truck. :)


i couldn't quite make out if they were throwing nets out in the water or if the guy was trying to land the fish with a net. too bad EP wasn't there asking for their saltwater fishing licenses. :devil2:

Sounds like you had an interesting night. Hopefully they will learn from the experience. Glad the guy seems to have survived the experience. I hope that it doesn't impact our ability to fish that area at night.

this brought up a fear that I have been having, a spot that I like has been inhabited with quite a crew using a little rubber raft to access...they go in bunches with a couple of rods each and are not at all prepared equiptment-wise...they line the steep rocks overnight where it is open to the sea and often unpredictable as far as swell size, I've watched them there in some pretty big seas at times when I will, without question, avoid that area because it is just too big to fish safely....all this makes landing a fish there a very iffy proposition, particularly in sneakers and sweatshirts....I believe that it is just a matter of time and my two fears are that one of them gets hurt, the second is the potential of loss of access to the location due to liability concerns...but...what can you do? I've spoken to them a number of times and they seem oblivious to the risk....

This is really just stupidity. I'm sorry to say but the guy who slipped in and died off Rockport this year was equally unprepared, that is a huge "white bucket crowd" spot and it's very dangerous, just like that spot in mhead.

People are just ignorant and don't have respect for the sea and it always ends badly.

TDF and I were at another spot in mhead once when we spotted three yahoos out in a canoe, we said to ourselves "that is a bad idea" When we were done at the spot, we walked up the rocks to the same scene that you described, firetrucks everywhere, these idiots capsized and had to be plucked out of the water, we couldn't hear the scream for help over the surf, luckily some teenagers (probably smoking weed on the rocks) spotted them and called 911.

Beavertail, and the Avenues in Narragansett are about due for a drowning... its been a year since the last.
