Clammer 08-14-2011, 11:48 AM I have a Yarmi 150 EFI SW series .
Its a awesome motor . But it has somewhere over 1000 hours . with only one major mechanical issue & that happened in the 1st year /under warranty .
I,m just thinking of shopping around the winter months for maybe a new one .I wish the dealers still took them in trade .
Whats you opinion on going with a Yami 4 stroke 150 or a Johnson e-teck / I was told the evenrude is the freshwater e-teck
I,m not thrilled with the weight of the 4-stroke . yet Ive never heard of anyone with constant problems with a Yahama .
Where on the e-tec /I,ve heard quite a few love /hate relationship .
any input will be appreciated // especially of the fuel/oil savings .

Sea Dangles 08-14-2011, 11:54 AM I have heard 1000 hrs on a properly maintained motor is light. Why not wait for it to puke? Keep some $ in the pocket,the fuel savings of a 4stroke wont be realized for years,plus you wont get squat for the 2 banger.

capecodkid 08-14-2011, 06:51 PM Why not look into a Suzuki? Cheaper than the yamaha by a few grand and there awesome engines. You see lots of commercial/guides using them now and everyone I know/ever talked to who has them has had 0 problems what so ever. I know if I was buying a new engine I'd get the zuke over yamaha. If its only between the two you mentioned then definitely the yamaha.
JeffH 08-14-2011, 08:40 PM I think the e-tec is Evinrude only and the Johnson badge is gone. As far as 4-stroke vs e-tec it depends on your boat and the difference in weight between the two. I have a 90hp Honda and all I have done in 11 years is plugs a couple of times, oil changes, gearcase oil and then pour gas in it.
Evinrude is having some kind of sale until labor day.
Monty 08-14-2011, 10:49 PM I bought the 90 HP Honda in 2007: great engine, a lot heavier than the Johnson 88 special I had, but the fuel savings the reliability, and the quietness of the engine, was well worth the investment.

I know your motor has acted up this year. You run real hard and a lot so you know what I am going to say. We have the same boat and I burn 20% of the gas you do. Let's get together for coffee and I will run the numbers on what I burned so far with a Yami 115 4-stroke. Better still, take my boat out. I am telling you, you don't need the 150 as the 115 burns much less gas and with my new SS prop I am turning 25 knots at 4200 rpms.
saltyric 08-15-2011, 06:32 AM I have owned a couple of suzukis...great motors......first one was a 115, did over 1100 hours in two years, ran like a top when I sold the boat. Currently I have a 225 and love it. That being said, the yami's are great motors. I have never heard a bad thing about them. I have a buddy that just turned 2000 hours on his yami 225 and it runs like the day he bought it. The Etec's also have fantastic reviews, I am just a big fan of the 4 stroke.
knotstable 08-15-2011, 06:40 AM I have had my yamaha 150 4 stroke since 2004 and have had no problems. I have replaced the impeller (no big deal) but I do change the engine oil & filter and lower end oil each year. Check the plugs and run stabilizer all year long. It's a very easy engine to maintain and every spring it starts rite up first shot. No matter what motor you have or buy it's all about how well you maintain it and run it. Prior to the Yamaha I had an Evinrude on the other boat and that ran like a gem also. I went to a bigger boat and got tired of buying 2 stroke oil.
JohnR 08-15-2011, 08:09 AM Lots of good advice here Mike. Not sure if you can but you may be able to reuse some of your rigging if you stick with the Yammi. Of course, you *might* want to change the rigging anyway. Are you at 7 years now? 8?
Most engines now-a-days are pretty good quality.
You can't go wrong with yami or evinrude.
IMO your decison should be based on the boat.
The 4 strokes are much heavier than the 2, and IF the boat
was not made for that kind of transom weight, it may not
perform properly.
That is what kept me with 2 stroke on repower, (ETEC)
fatcow 08-15-2011, 04:04 PM I have a 2006 suki w/ 1900 hours and runs new. Not even a hiccup. Maintenance is the key. Yami or suk great motors. Etec still up in the air for me

But Chris , make sense / drive it til it blows or just about everything needs replacing .
What I don,t want is breaking down between may & Nov & taking a long ass time to get back up & running .
Currently there is a 23 Sea Hunt up on blocks at my Marina . He bent the shaft in a 225 Yami 4 stroke ......... its just sitting there with no lower unit waiting for it to come back .......... must be pushing a month ;;

As Yamaha 4 strokes go the 150 has been their best one.
Can't go wrong with Yamaha, etec, or suzuki.
I would go with the best price & longest warranty.
Got Stripers 08-16-2011, 11:19 AM I love my 140 Suzuki 4, this is my 5th season, starts and runs like a charm and I've done nothing but the usual winterizing. Clammer if you want to fish and look, listen, I'd have to believe our hulls are close in weight, I might even be heavier with all the lead and 4 batteries.
