Has anyone here fished for Stripers with quohogs in the past or this season. I was told to open them, lightly salt them, put in fridge for a day or two, then they should be ready to use.

Drift in the rift with no weight... weight with hook a foot or so up from that (like a scup rig)... put on feathered/tailed jig...?

How far off from shore should I go in my canoe to jig for Sea Bass... Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

They're just clams....and clams are king up on PI....so I'm sure they would work

I like them for chowder and stuffies....

I got 200 fresh Little Necks going on the grill at a big cookout in about and hour. MMMMMMMMM:love:

If you sell the quahogs, you could probably buy twice the clams at the bait shop.

Clams are awesome. Just depends on what feedbag the bass have on.

Yeah sea clams are for bass. Quahogs are for me. Plus sea clams will stay on the hook better and are bigger. And it's the sea clams that pull up off the bottom after a good blow and break apart for the bass to feed on. The quahogs even if pulled up in a storm usually won't break apart to become food considering their hard shells.

And a captain/charter guy I know only uses sea clams and gets real big fish in the boat. Quahogs will probably work but I wouldn't waste em.

What some bait dealers sell as "sea clams" are actually just the jumbo-sized chowder 'hogs that the NY/NJ guys call skimmer clams. They sell them fresh, in 50 lb. burlap sacks. Those are the ones to use for bait, if you can get them. Fresh, true sea clams are almost as delectable as scallops. I think they're probably more closely related to scallops or steamers than to quahogs.

"skimmer clams" are ocean sea clams, not quahogs at all. They come in two varieties, one sold as bait clams come from polutted waters those sold as "food qulaity" come from unpolutted waters. Sea clams or skimmer clams are much better bait than any size quahoig.

Quahogs have very little scent compared to sea clam. Theres a reason no one uses them.

But if he uses them now .he,ll get smoked with Scup.

I had a place in the bay . where I would dig for necks & get & also smash alot of Sea Clams .
I would throw them in with the bigs ;;. if it was one or 2 they let it slide . But if I tried to put in a descent amount i heard about it . They don,t have a very long shelf life .
That,s the only oders I fill now are for Chowders .
Its a alot easier to make a call for L/N orders .
Even the diggers will swap their bigs for mine if they are for them selves .There is a big difference in taste & quality , in the ones from Hard Bottom compared to those in soft or mud bottoms ..:fishin:

I'd rather keep the quohogs for the table. They're good raw or as stuffies. My favorite clam of all is the bearded clam, though.

2 weeks ago I got a 35" striper in the surf on a chunk of sea clam. (bought as frozen bait).
