Just re-read #^&#^&#^&#^& Russell's book Striper Wars. What a great book!

I read it in 05 when it came out but re-reading it added another facet to the Striper decline in the 80s. Seems even more important with what has been happening with the Striper population.

If you have not read it, pick it up. It's great read.

But, everyone kills bass, so it must be OK.

The sea is full of fish. Just because you can't find them or catch them doesn't mean they aren't there, so things must be OK.

If the law says you can kill 2 per day then it must be OK.

If the law lets you get a commercial license and take bass, then it must be OK.

The managers are too smart to let the bass collapse again, so just do what the laws say and everything will be OK.

Just think about how much better than "OK" the fishery would be if WE, the resource users, all killed fewer bass . . .

"Striper Wars" tells the story of how the striper was nearly lost, and it might open some eyes, but only if you are willing to accept that your killing of stripers is part of the problem.
