With the potential of a Category 2 storm hitting us late weekend - what steps are needed?

Do we board up windows for example?

Rockfish9

I'll pull the boat and secure it to the trailer on dry land.... fuel up and test start the generator and chainsaw.. I've got gas for the grill, a freezer full of fish and meat and plenty of booze.. after that.. it's out of my hands... all the boards in the world wouldn't stop the 30'+ pine trees in the front yard...I'll spend my vacation next week doing what ever it takes to get back to normal.

Pray it is goes East or west even just 50 miles.
If it does come up the bay John , get the wife and kid out of your house. If it hits the bay at high tide, you will get flooded.

Make sure you have plenty of aspirin and booze so you can deal with the idiots that will eventually give you a headache!

As for me, I have all the basics covered.
Water, food, light, first aid, fuel, insurance paid, and something to do that DOESN't require a TV or a Computer!

How soon before we see the "traditional" run-out-of-everything news clips from local food store?
Apparently HD has already seen a run on generators, and I'm sure Loews has too!

OH, and how long on Sunday will it take before we see the first moron go for a swim or surf during the storm?

OK, back to work again.......

The stupidest I have seen is people leaning out over the ocean from the cliffs in Newport relying on the heavy wind to keep them from falling off into the grinding waves below.

I guess I'll charge up the portable dvd player and my kid's video games so he has something to do if we lose power. I'll put the pool stuff and patio furniture away and make sure the gutters are clear of debris. Other than that, I have plenty of ice and coolers and enough food and liquor to get through anything mother nature can throw my way.

Yep. I'll be powering down client's servers and unnecessary equipment, powering down most of my mine and run the Innernets off my UPS(s) and laptops on low power settings.

Tie down grills and anything else that you can't move inside, and move everything inside that you can. That's about all you can do. Cat 2 force winds shouldn't break windows, but flying debris can, I guess. I won't bother. I don't know whether the old advice about opening windows a crack to "equalize pressure" is a wives' tale or not. I don't do it.

If you live close enough to the water to even wonder about being washed away, it might be a good idea to make plans to evacuate.

Oh, and stuff in the freezer? Won't do much good if your power is out more than a coupla days. Dry good, canned goods, that's what's good to have on hand. Stuff you can eat cold if you have an electric range, and no gas or charcoal grill.

What.......Nobody running out to get Bread, Milk, Batteries, and Bottled Water.

I have plenty of batteries, we can bake our own bread as the thing is approaching, and milk would spoil anyway if the power's out. My water comes from ground water wells. What I probably need more than anything else is gas for the chainsaw. :rotf2:

And don't forget to top off your car's 3/4 full gas tank, so it can sit in the yard all week underneath a downed tree.

Fill the fridge and freezer w/ frozen bottles of water, use a cooler for drinks so you are not opening and closing the fridge! I go the old fashion way for lights, hurricane lamps. Gotta get a gallon or so of lamp oil. Gas grill or camping stove is a good idea if you have electric range. I'll load the iPad,iPod,iPhone (recharge w/ car charger) up w/ movies and pull out some books. Don't forget markers and crayons for da kids!!

By tomorrow the trailer wil have two new leaf springs, four new hubs, new hitch, new jack, new safety chain, and new cable on winch... Big heavy pile of old junk next to it right now. All four brakes were gone. Not putting any back on it. Undecided as to whether I will haul or not. If I do, it will be Saturday night...in the dark, when the morons have left the ramp.

As for the house, I already lost the big trees last weekend, but still have a box elder that I would like down. Better half gets back tonight, so she can handle the provisioning. I am already fielding calls from clients wanting help or work ahead of the storm.... Two calls to haul their boats out for them in the past half hour.

Sharpening my leaders and tying my hooks.

For you small business owners and personal computer users - makes sure you have data backups going.

If you use online backup verify that your backups are complete.

If you use tape/other media make sure you have copies of your backup information in multiple locations.

I sent this info out to some of my clients yesterday and this morning.

Our clients under contract will automatically have the following completed as part of our services but I want to extend these recommendations to you as well. If you have any questions or wish **** to perform this work, please contact me today via phone or email.

With the likelihood increasing of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane Irene reaching our shores sometime late Sunday or early Monday morning, **** is getting in touch with you now in order to provide steps and recommendations for preparing your technical infrastructure. These plans may not need to be implemented if the storm moves far enough east of current computer models. Operations in the northeast quadrant of the storm, especially if the storm tracks west, may expect even harsher conditions (as of 8am Thursday, storm track is more west).

Recommendations:

Backups:
We want to confirm quality backup and offsite retention of data. **** will inspect backup jobs but in some cases (tape backup systems) clients will be responsible for taking adequate tape backup offsite. Most on-premise safes are not sufficient to protect data in these conditions.

Tape clients:
* **** will confirm proper backups.
* Client to confirm that copies of latest Thursday (tomorrow night’s backup) recent full backup is taken offsite by primary onsite liaison (or designate).
* Client to confirm that copies of latest Wednesday (tonight’s backup) recent full backup is taken offsite by secondary onsite liaison (or designate). This is to provide redundancy in offsite backup. Friday backup will remain local to facility.

DATTO / Internet based backup:
* **** will double-check proper backup completions and offsite replication. We know these are operating correctly for our monitored systems but one can never check too often.

Computer Equipment:

Servers:
* Should the storm track maintains present course, **** will remotely bring down servers on early Sunday morning / afternoon by remotely powering the servers OFF.
* Please work with your **** account technician to discuss a primary and alternate employee to restart servers on Monday morning. We may be reacting to damage with other clients or our own properties and may not be available to simply turn equipment on.

Desktops:

* Please have all desktops and monitors powered OFF by end of business Friday (or Saturday for those operations open) other than crucial desktops needed for a specific function.
* Any crucial desktops should have an arrangement made with your **** account technician to complete a manual shutdown.

Network:
* Please leave all network equipment on as access to the network will be necessary from **** remote access.

Network Storage Devices:
* For clients with Network Storage devices such as DATTO and NAS network drives, please ensure these devices remain operating.

Facilities:

Facility:
* If you have concerns on the locations of your servers / critical equipment being susceptible to storm damage, please contact us as soon as possible.

Any special concerns or questions should be brought up with **** staff on Thursday or Friday morning if at all possible.

Thank you,

John Redmond

One of the problems with today's weather forecasts is that weather has become very dramatic in this age of reality TV. The weather channel and all other weather people way over dramatize and exaggerate the weather every day. Then, when something really bad comes our way there are no new adjectives to separate this from yesterdays storm. They come up with some new "exclusive" ratings graph that shows "extreme" or catastrophic. If this is just another 50mph blow don't you think at some point they will loose credibility?

People are spending a lot of $$ to prepeare for this and if it turns out to be mild and not worth it, the next time they will not prepare like that and that would be when the "big one" hits...There needs to be some accountability on their behalf.

Started here too.... Refridge's freezer died overnight..... this will be fun. Bet I can't get a delivery today..... Where do you buy dry ice?:smash:
We had that happen a few weeks ago...pain in the ass. Lost the evaporator fan and it took a week to get parts.

Quite this morning...a few birds and insects but usually the animals are making all kind of racket.

At 6am I could have sworn we had a red sky.

I did take my awning down and have the deck furniture lashed. Trying to get the loose stuff in but there's a lot of it.

The weather channel really is an entertainment show. Some hot weather women though-

That being said- apparently modern forecasting is able to determine the track of a hurricane pretty accurately but they have not yet been able to forecast intensity. There was no major reason that intensity should have dropped before NC - but it did. So I give some of the real weather guys a pass.

Andy, you should go stay with family or friends for the storm, and then MOVE.......

Yeah ... makes sense, although I still have the broken leg to deal with :wall: ... so no moving until that is over ... but will start looking ... I got her to put the glass and stuff away, but she still left garbage cans, flower pots and two touring kayaks lying in the driveway ... I have to think that they are just mentally challenged or lazy ... but this is the same person who has not held a job since I first met her more nine or 10 years ago ... I guess that points to it ...

I would have no problems moving the stuff if I wasn't on crutches but hopefully it was cause some serious damage to her property and be a good .... "I TOLD YOU SO" scenario

Kayaks boogie'n down the street at 70mph would be fun to see! Just don't want to be at the spot where they "land". Probably in somebody's read car window. I would like to see a pic of the boat hanging out the window though. Who needs Thules!

NWS forcast for wind speed vs radius from eye as of 5 pm Sat

HURRICANE CENTER LOCATED NEAR 36.2N 76.0W AT 27/2100Z
POSITION ACCURATE WITHIN 15 NM

PRESENT MOVEMENT TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST OR 15 DEGREES AT 11 KT

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE 950 MB
MAX SUSTAINED WINDS 70 KT WITH GUSTS TO 85 KT.
64 KT....... 75NE 75SE 35SW 35NW.
50 KT.......120NE 120SE 80SW 60NW.
34 KT.......250NE 250SE 150SW 125NW.
12 FT SEAS..360NE 420SE 180SW 0NW.

Since Prov is about 150 miles from NYC as the crow flies, we should expect 45-50 knot sustained winds with higher gusts when Irene is at NYC. Could be even lower as the storm goes up the mid atlantic coast before hitting NYC. At 30 knots , it becomes a pretty common thing for us in RI.
Lets hope it loses some force quickly after going inland.

In fact , according to this data , Irene is no longer a hurricane. Its now a tropical storm. Lets hope it stays trending down in wind speed as it should without 80+ degree water to feed on.

Mike, 70 kts is still hurricane force winds. It's 74 mph or higher. 70 kts is closer to 80 mph than 70.

It's going to make landfall closer than NYC, I think, too. Remember it was over land for 10 solid hours and only lost 5 mph in max sustained winds---that's very unusual. And the water off Sandy Hook is very close to 80 degrees, at least at the surface.

950mb and 80 degree water is nuts...

Nothing about this one makes any sense. :rotf2:

Hurricanes with 950 mb central pressure don't have 80 mph winds. Hurricanes don't usually spend 10 hours over land and lose only 5 mph in max winds. They also don't drop 2 mb in pressure during the same period.

TF strength winds 250 mi from the center on the eastern side??

And why the weather geeks are calling this a big one while the rest argue if it's worthy because of the Saffir-Simpson rating.

Even if the winds aren't that terrible I think this has the potential to knock out a lot of power when it reaches NE. Curious what the storm surge may be in Mount Hope Bay tomorrow morning...might have to walk down for some pics if it's not too bad.

Here's the 7 PM update. No changes. 7:30 this morning it made landfall with 85 mph max sustained winds, and minimum pressure of 952 mb. Almost 12 hours later, it's passing over Va Beach and out into the ocean, with 80 mph winds, and minimum central pressure of 950 mb. And the IR sat image shows a better formed storm than it was yesterday.

Missed the Kts vs MPH . That's why all the charts don't agree with the report.

Still a lot better than the original scenario.

Doing nothing at my house right now. Local weather forecasters (RI) say 30 to 50 MPH sustained winds tomorrow with lower numbers inland and higher at the coast. Gusts to 70 expected near coast. They all seem to be telling the same story on Channel 6, 10 and 12.Lets hope they are right. They are talking about a big surg in Buzzards Bay right near Canal entrance to be the worst

Chart below shows water temps along NJ at 70. That should help. Local meteorologist says this is total insurance against it intensifying. Of course it is Mother Nature.

Satellite picture is deceptive. Radar shows strong bands much closer to eye than the cloud formation would indicate. Still big but not 500 miles across.

Why it didn't intensify north of NC in the warm water is anybodies guess. Just happy to see it didn't!

Well tomorrow is the day. I expect to lose power. Question is will it be a few hours, a day or several days. In CT I lost power for almost a week after Gloria and lost a whole freezer full of food including a just purchased whole spring lamb from a local farm. Barbecued all I could and brought stuff to all my friends but still lost 3/4 of the lamb. All the discarded food in the neighborhood brought animals from the big park (east Rock Park) across the street from me. I had to battle a rackoon one day who was obviously not afraid of me one bit. I decided he could have the trash! :)

Landfall in NewEngland still looks like just about NYC. Some talk as far east as Bridgeport. Still better than tues-wed's track showing ground zero as Narragansett Bay.

Good luck to all. One downed tree can make the difference between a none event and a big PITA. Lets hope most of us dodge the bullet.

My guess is that it's tracking close to the coast, and the winds can''t wrap around the west side of the eye as freely as they would over open water. Not getting any stronger or weaker, but the east side grew, with hurricane winds extending 125 miles NE and SE of the center.

Blowing hard enough here to wake me up, obviously. :D

Woke up about 8 AM. just heavy rain on roof. Still have power here. Expect strong band starting in about 2 hours according to radar. Probably biggest gusts. Looks like the worst of it but its a strong wide band so we will see. . Right now its a non event. Could change as the afternoon goes on and the long exposure to moderate wind starts to take its toll on weak trees , etc.

New York looks to be doing well. Not the flooding that was anticipated.

I'm hoping the trees hold up

Do we board up windows for example?

well ya never know if you'll have to
