I keep buying old penns on ebay. Cannot beat them. Easy to repair, strong and battle hardened.

I guy I used to fish with a bit started bragging one day that someone was getting him on the okuma "pro-staff".

My only response was "great, but then you have to use okumas..."

I have 6 Okuma spinning reels. I think they are a great value for the price.

Just this year I picked up 2 additional Quantum Cabo spinning reels and no a similar Okuma Epixor is not as nice but at less than 1/2 the price it is certainly more than 1/2 as nice as the Quantum.

Did that make sense?

Bought an Okuma Metaloid on a show special at the '02 MSBA show at the Armory. Thing was silky smooth, but it blew up during the first night of my first ever Cuttyhunk trip that June.... Was not happy, but was able to borrow a spare reel off of either Goose or Specialist. Company sent me an Epixor and stated that the Metaloid was not intended for saltwater...(So why were they selling them at the MSBA Show????) Never again for me

I have 3 of the smaller spinning reels that I use with novice fishermen (clients, family friends, kids), for bottom fishing and stripers and blues. Caught up to 40 inch fish on them without an issue. Ones I have also have baitrunner feature. Great bang for the buck.

They get a bad rap because they have some really cheap models, but they also make some that are well made and a good value. Some guys think if a reel isn't expensive it must suck. I used a Salina on the boat for 2 years and all I ever did was give it a quick fresh water rinse after each use. Then I took used it for a year in the surf and it was dunked a bunch of times and had no problems. I put it away one fall and forgot to rinse or lube it. When I grabbed it the next spring and brought it back on the boat, the handle was seized up. I busted the handle when I tried to loosen it up and threw it away. I definitely got my money's worth with it and would buy another one if I needed another reel. The new Okuma that was in OTW this month looks pretty interesting, too.

I can't speak for all models, but I have an Epixor and it has been working great for a couple seasons now.
