Figured I would start a thread ;)

Halfway up Gansett Bay, wind is blowing in the low 30's gusting higher. Already larger limbs are down.

Bay is coming up the end of my street (nothing to worry on where I live) but supposedly a couple streets over one of the small houses along the beach was taken out. If that is happening here - God help those on the beaches out front.

Couple pics:

The Sakonnet looked pretty full an hour ago, but it's a big tide to begin with. Don't think it's enough to cause any flooding though...aside from the houses down by Riverside marine. Many of them have crawl spaces just above the high water line.

It hasn't been too bad so far. I woke up around 3 and it was blowing 20-30. I'd say, right now, consistently 40 with gusts over 50. We had a monster gust about 5 minutes ago that caused a brief power blip. MMA and Taylor's Point stayed dry on the AM high--we'll see what the evening brings with the wrap-around SW winds.

The rain is basically over here--it's a wind event. And it definitely stepped up a notch in the last half-hour.

This is in Bournedale, just north of the Canal and 3 miles from CC Bay.

My girl filled up both bath tubs with water just in case. So I wake up and jump in the shower and it's ice cold. She filled up one of the tubs with hot water by mistake! So she comes in and sees me sitting in the tub and says WTF are you doing! I laughed and asked if she was planning on making ramen noodles in the tub.

This is impressive.

National Grid estimates that there are 1,178 individual outages across the state that affect 185,447 of the company's 480,281 customers. At 11 a.m. Sunday, the number of affected customers was 155,000. At 9:15 a.m., it had been 81,000 customers.

Just came back from a coastal tour from the canal to Marion and the difference from end to end was night and day.

Still have power in S. Plymouth but looked like it was out from Onset to Marion.

Quite a few boats way up on the beach between Onset and Marion.

Marion harbor was crazy but then we went out to Silver shell beach, which is just outside of Marion harbor and it was X10.

Marion looked like a ware zone compared to where I am in Cedarville.

Out here... Earl was much worse last year. No rain at all here. < 1/4" total. Wind to 45 and those were only gusts. Last year we had some real wind over 60 sustained.

I figured I spend $1000 and one full day to prepare for this non-event. I wonder if my insurance co will re-imburse me for my trouble.:jump1:

I will not listen to the weather experts again. I will make my own forecast. 5 days ago a cat 2 hurricane with winds 125mph was going to pass over BI and up thru RI/MA...today a 50 mph "storm" went well west of NYC and did little to nothing here. Grateful yes, overhyped...for sure.

Other than some flooding...there was no real hurricane damage, A few trees that should have been thinned out fell down, and a few streets flooded but no real hurricane damage. How many roofs were ripped clean off the house? TWC was focused on a house that was going to loose a few shingles!!! Most beaches are in decent shape. If a real hurricane ever makes it up here, you will see some damage. Poor Jim Cantore could not find a breeze to fly a kite in that storm.

The over reaction from Katrina is what caused all of this. Following that storm, Way too much gov money was spent to prepare for storms.
I thought fishermen exaggerated...weathermen are far worse. NOT ONE of the weather people would say the storm was weakening..not one. And it was breaking apart. They kept saying it was going to strengthen..it didn't.

I still think they should be held accountable for their public forecast, and then we should rank who the most accurate forecasters are...they hire forecaster's now for the best cleavage and whitest teeth. Just give me the facts and put your clothes back on.

Even Right now on CDD the headline says:
Weakened Irene still threat

IMO the gov has instructed the liberal media to follow their lead.

And don't give me better safe than sorry garbage...get it right.

Padanaram is the usual mess with boats on the beach.

Saw gusts up to 70, 40-50 sustained at Fairhaven Shipyard about 2 hours ago now.

This just isn't true.

There was talk it might gain some strength after it hit the ocean again after NC but every analysis I saw (perhaps 8+ different sources) reported it was getting weaker after that.

Pretty much every meteorologist I saw said the legacy of this storm would be the rainfall which looks to have been accurate.

The wind forecasts for RI seem to have been pretty much on target if just a bit high.

The consensus was that while this wasn't a violent storm, the size and ability to impact a large number of people was a real danger.

While there are certainly parts of the media that will sensationalize anything to generate some interest, I think a lot of people make their own hype by watching too much coverage on cable tv and online.

It's self inflicted...

High tide in Buzzards Bay is in about a half hour, and at low tide this afternoon, the water was ABOVE the mean high water mark in almost every part of the Upper Cape along the bay. And the wind is still a sustained 40 SW with gusts well over 60. Trees are down all over Bourne and Falmouth, some roads impassible due to downed trees.

Nah, it wasn't you. I happened to be in Bourne and Falmouth today, and if someone is claiming that it never gusted to more than 45 on the Vineyard today, then I'm raising this:

:bs:

Because it's STILL gusting more than 45 in freaking Buzzards Bay.

At 4:30 PM there were measured gusts to 66 at Hyannis airport.

Shelburne Falls. Beautiful spot. My Parents live near there--Western Mass go hit hard.

Buckland looking at shelburne... bridge of flowers on other side?

Yep. Water was supposedly going over the bridge of flowers. Unbelievable.

Further downstream they're worried about the Stillwater Bridge, which takes Interstate 91 over the Deerfield. 91 has been closed since around 3pm yesterday between exits 24 & 26. The normal detour of Rtes 5&10 was also closed, just reopened this AM. What a cluster that must've been.

And the covered bridge on Eunice Williams drive in Greenfield(the "pumping station" as it's commonly known) was knocked off it's supports but somehow didn't wash away. This bridge in Bartonsville VT wasn't so lucky: http://t.co/oCixrjk

So i lose power yesterday morning and there were about 75 power company trucks staged at a couple locations in town. This morning i drive past about 50 that are still staged, but 4 miles a way i dont have power. Something isnt adding up. i realize that when the wind is honking they cant work but there was barely a ripple on my lake when i jumped in at 430 this morning. The water temp dropped about 10-15 degrees.

We had mandatory evac. Sat. at 4:00. Police/Fire came around at 10:00 PM asking people to leave. Lost power 6:00 AM. Around 11:00 the tree came down across the street blocking the road. I cut some branches off so cars can be by.

A little later my neighbor came by and we all went walking around the hood and to the beach. 2nd picture is around the corner (Emma the cutie is my God daughter). People were kayaking up the street.

Irene just prior to making landfall in NC....

I bet they don't think they got hyped...

lots of trees down here in Orleans, still a lot of power outages, some structural damage, even a couple of small fires, from blown transformers.. and such.. not much rain, but we sure got some wind.. I, for one, am convinced that this was a "real storm".....

but, I am sure the conspiracy terrorists will say different.

Raise whatever flag you want (just don't raise the hurricane flags)...this was no hurricane:

we get winds like this in Nov and throughout the winter

We never had that 747 like roar you get when a hurricane passes by. Most of the inland reporters with handheld anemometers were hard-pressed to find wind speed >15mph

This plot is the windiest place around these parts

Lost power yesterday afternoon and it's still out. Luckily we didn't have any damage to the house or property, other than a couple small branches down. We got the important stuff from the fridge into a marine cooler last night and now my biggest concerns are my pool being a huge mess and my eel tank not having power for the airator. I can't complain about anything considering some of the damage I saw on my way into work today.

Falmouth had gusts to the low 60's once the wind came SW and probably a 3 foot surge. Great Harbor in WH was wild and there is no way you wanted your boat there, but sheltered places like Quissett were fine. I left my boat in and it was fine. The tree damage was mostly limbs or dead stuff. A lot of people out driving around in the storm. Surf drive got sanded over and the herring runs all plugged.

It would be a good day to go beach combing.

I'm guessing 3-4 days before things are fishable again. Took a week after Bob.

I'm hopeful this blow will have moved those bass off chatham into Nantucket sound and set up an early september fishery we get some years.

Power never went out, no trauma in my life. My mother called me and one of my brothers was worried about staying at his house below a dam and went to Killington, He' s stuck there for a while, another brothers woodshop got almost washed out that is the water washed everything out around it. google (news) Prattsville NY... it is basically gone...
Upstate NY and parts of VT are really hurting from the rain totals... which take a day or two to fully realize the impact...
still over 4 million without power overall...
The "impact" of this storm and the "intensity" of this storm had nothing to do with each other... I won't comment on the local channels, I barely watch them for storm coverage, but TWC absolutely HAD to hype this... How else do you get people in the Catskills/Adirondacks/Vermont to pay attention to Hurricane coverage?? So many other factors come into play... (ironically enough that does not include the new moon tides, since there was not many problems from storm surge...) The Philly/NJ area had not only the wettest August ever but one of the wettest month's <period> ever... Watching the radar and wind reports as it hit NC and VA could make you believe it was falling apart and disorganized, but if you skip all the on the scene reporters and tune in to TWC around quarter of every hour you can hear the hurricane expert guys... they were constantly incredulous that although the max sustained winds were level or occasionally decreasing the pressure remained EXTREMELY low for a cat 1 storm... Their take was that instead of using the strength signified by the low pressure to produce a strong core, the storm used that energy to greatly expand the reach of the hurricane force and especially the trop. storm force winds a great distance... Let's be realistic; we're never going to see an Andrew or Katrina up here... the sst's won't support it... and, although this one moved way slower than your average NE trop. system, they usually accelerate quite a bit once the go from N motion to NE...Watching the initial landfall on the scene reports you could definitely feel underwhelmed and question whether the storm was really still as intense as they said it was... but remember, the strongest winds, in the NE quadrant, (more accurately the right front quadrant) were offshore the whole time, until Irene made landfall in NY and, (as we in Eastern MA have seen) they continued for a long time as it pulled away... we could expect these long duration gusts because if you remember Hatteras and other NC locals were still getting close to hurricane gusts when the center was up around MD... UNUSUALLY slow moving storm for the NE... heard one hurricane expert saying he wished the saffir-simpson scale didn't even exist because it creates a false sense of security...I think we have a lot to learn from Irene and it will be one more experience to plug into the predictions for the next one... Just imagine if it had reached cat 4, dropped back to cat 3 but skirted the outer banks (which would take a miniscule difference in course) and made landfall around SoCo as a strong Cat 2... this was a very big bullet dodged... for us anyway...:smokin:

Power back at 4:00 PM yesterday. Boat stayed in the marina and rode out the storm fine. I was there ready to untie and ride out in the bay but it worked out.

My biggest PIA was no power and a flodded basement. Got a basement Waterproofing company coming next week for an estimate. In 37 years in this house I never had water in the basement until we put an addition on. Now EVERY rainstorm brings water.

Jimbo

Got power back yesterday, went out early Sunday AM, unfortunately not in time to take a shower before chemo therapy, now I can't take one until it ends on Friday. Fortunately, we found 300' of extension cords and my neighbor hooked us up to his generator on Monday so we got the 3"in the basement pumped out, but with a pretty significant loss, including 3+ years of OTW magazines.
The major gripe? My whackjob neighbor on the other side is a yard fanatic. The water coming from the basement finally made it's way into his backyard. He knocks on my door telling me I have to stop the pump, not because it's a threat to flooding his basement, but because he took the afternoon off from work so he could get every leaf and little twig off his "pristine" yard. The day before he had taken every downed branch and twig in his yard, dragged them across my front yard and piled them up in front of my house and did the same to his neighbor on the other side, making sure there was nothing in front of his. In the past three days I bet he's logged about 10 hours on his leaf blower. I guess disasters like Irene bring out the best and worst in people. Everyone else of us bonded together and helped each other out as much as we could.
