Mad Hatter

Saturday before Irene a friend and I take his boat out to Cutty. I rushed out of the house and left breakfast on the counter. Bad move. Empty stomach and long boat ride has a history for me. So we're gearing up for the deadly tube n worm, and I do a controlled gak over the side. We're dragging gear for three hours without a bump. Run out of worms (not my responsibility). Throw artificial for awhile. Nothin. decide to move around since it was a beautiful day, and between two of the islands the sky darkens with a cloud of birds. We're there alone. They are medium blues going crazy. I get two in the boat and unhooking the second, the combo of fish wiggle, boat roll and wet floor sends me down. Good news? Fish is off. Bad news?
one of the trebles is all the way through the back of my thumb, unbelievable cleanly. My buddy is casting furiously in the back of the boat, and I don't want to buzzkill him. I'm calmly looking through my bag and realize My cutters aren't there. So I call back and asked if he has cutters with him. He brings some up but they are lightweight and won't scratch that heavy hook. He's freaking out and I at least cut the hook free from the popper. We figure we should at least try to flatten the barb and back it out and that goes surprisingly well. Little saltwater rinse and I'm back in action. Get 4 more. It all catches up with me and I'm done. We wrap up and I stuff a big pastrami on rye in my face (mustard) on the way back.
What a trip! It's what keeps us comin back! Any other fun stories?
