View Full Version : togfest II
it's almost that time of year. how's sunday october 23rd sound? we could use a few more boats this year. it would be cool to raft up a few boats if the weather allows. so who's in w/ a boat and who's hoing a ride. i'll put together a few plugs for biggest fish. or maybe i'll just leave them in my truck as they will be coming home with me anyway :rotf2:
JackK 09-20-2011, 08:58 PM I would definitely be in, and would be willing to throw down gas & crab money as well as a craft beer or two.
Padawan 09-20-2011, 09:05 PM When and wear is this happening thinking of doing this?
iamskippy 09-20-2011, 09:16 PM If i dont go under the knife by then, i will be more then happy to hoe out my anchor pulling skills, i will also be happy to chip in.

RickBomba 09-20-2011, 10:56 PM I'd be in and would be happy to throw in gas and beer for any takers (thanks for the idea Kev!).
Rick
PRBuzz 09-21-2011, 04:00 AM My boat is in, can take 3.....
there's a nice little spot we did last year in buzzards bay, might as well go there again.
Goose 09-21-2011, 06:24 AM I wanna go i wanna go.
fishbones 09-21-2011, 09:12 AM I'd be up for hoing a ride with someone. I can contribute gas $, some plugs and other stuff as needed.
ThrowingTimber 09-21-2011, 10:34 AM I'd be up for some tog action. I'll contribute towards, gas, bait , ice and assist with any clean up. Sounds like a fun time :)

Rockport24 09-21-2011, 10:59 AM I'm in to ho a ride, so of course will chip in with anything needed.
Moses 09-21-2011, 11:39 AM Need to check my schedule first but would be interested. Have boat & could take 1-3 depending if Elmo comes with me or takes his boat.

JohnR 09-21-2011, 03:49 PM Will need to check schedule but possibly in ;) - with gas & grub
Goose 09-21-2011, 04:30 PM I think I can find two s-bers that can jump in with me.
if I get back early enough from NYC, I'd go. Would contribute towards gas, bait, food, etc.
Padawan 09-25-2011, 09:10 PM If we can get enough boats Lets do entry fee of 50 bucks per boat. Biggest tog wins the pot.

Got Stripers 09-26-2011, 07:04 AM Assuming I'm not traveling, I'd definately be in and I'd want someone who can show me what the F**K I'm doing wrong. I was out Saturday in Buzz. Bay, had some fun with Albies and then anchored up to feed the tog some crabs. That's exactly what I did, just fed them one after the other, off jigs, off high low, off anything I threw until the short supply was gone. Switched over to my 4" split tail on a 3/8oz Kalin jig head in olive and don't I catch a nice fat tog and 10 black sea bass without moving. Probably drew in some fish with all the crab chum. It was fun fishing in 15 feet, I'll have to bring one of my fly fishing clients out with a sinking weight 6-7 weight, I would think those blackies would fall for a similar quartering, drift and twitch retrieve.
JamesJet 09-26-2011, 07:38 AM I might be in, I have never fished that area or for Tog in general so I need a remedial course. Where would we launch from and whats the gear required? I was thinking either a japaneese style jig stick and or a classic e glass bait/eel rod that I really like. Hi Low rigs with bank sinkers add crabs and go at it?
The Dad Fisherman 09-26-2011, 08:10 AM If we can get enough boats Lets do entry fee of 50 bucks per boat. Biggest tog wins the pot.

I'd rather we just get together and fish.....not everything needs a prize.

If we do something, it's usually like who's ever in, bring a plug and biggest fish wins the plugs. Last year ,not all boats were in same area so logistically it wasn't possible.
the plan is to lauch out of fairhaven and any light/med duty bass setup will do. tog can be frustrating but once you get the hang of it they are easy pickings. for teminal stuff i use a 5' leader of 40-50# flouro w/ a basic 2 hook tog rig w/ both baits on the bottom. a few tips - moving water is best, don't bounce the sinker, seems the more guys on the boat fishing the better the bite is - kind of like chumming i guess, wait for the bigger bump and get them out quick. so much fun to catch - rockpile bluefish :uhuh:
PRBuzz 09-26-2011, 08:28 AM I'd rather we just get together and fish.....not everything needs a prize.
Ditto
bassballer 09-26-2011, 08:29 AM If the stars allign Id be down for this. Can bring 2-3 guys.
JackK shoot me a message, if I can go you can jump on my boat. Im sure Costello will come too.
InTheHole 09-26-2011, 08:56 AM They are here, we were out yesterday and once the tide started to run we couldn't keep the hooks baited fast enough

Padawan 10-04-2011, 07:18 PM So how is this whole togfest work? Can someone run the who details for me?
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
it's pretty free form. if you have room on your boat for anybody just say so or send a few pms to guys who are looking to ho a ride. the morning of we meet up at the ramp, for those w/ trailer boats, or we just meet up at the rendezvous spot. we all just fish the same area and ancor up close to each other and catch some fish. i checked out some new spots yesterday and we did okay w/ fish up to 8#. the spot we've been fishing the last few years is crazy good - it's not uncommon to have 75 fish in a tide with plenty around 8-10lbs. just a couple of weeks away
angler229 10-04-2011, 08:35 PM If someone has room id like to ho a ride.

Rockport24 10-05-2011, 09:37 AM maybe the guys who are generously offering to take people on their boats could just post if they have any room?
I for one don't have a ride, but I am a really good mate and will bring some good grub! :D

Got Stripers 10-05-2011, 11:43 AM Is the 23rd the "official date"? Still in pending my schedule and weather obviously and after a day out with Goose (thanks much
Tony), I actually now have a clue. Not sure how many are going to comfortably fishin from my 20 footer, 2 I'm guessing at best, Tony if you want to come with me this time around let me know.

Sea Dangles 10-13-2011, 12:59 PM Fished the area on Monday. Did manage some beasts to the boat but one took me to school in a BIG way.
extended forcast looks good. i think we could use a few more boats though, dont be shy captains - all you need is an ancor and some crabs. for those who know the area we are fishing is fairhaven the best place to launch from?
Goose 10-15-2011, 07:00 PM There are three brand new ramps made in NewBedford.
Gifford St ramp puts you in the harbor, near the dike.
The West Rodney French Boulevard ramp has the best location putting you the closest in buzzards bay, even closer the Padarum ramp. Its float can only hold two boats at a time. A single lane ramp.
The East Rodney French Boulevard ramp is on the opposite side near Davey's Locker. If its blowing N/NE.. I would avoid this ramp, other then that its good. It has a pier not a float. A double lane ramp.
Padawan 10-15-2011, 09:16 PM I should be in that day, but I will be launching from Padanurm...
fish4striper 10-16-2011, 06:57 AM I should be in that day, but I will be launching from Padanurm...
Do you have to wait for the bridge to open at that ramp?
Sea Dangles 10-16-2011, 07:30 AM Tough to scout for Tog lately but I will make an attempt on tuesday. I tentatively have JackK, Angler229, and Fishbones as customers. Looking forward to some good togging.
beamie 10-16-2011, 08:26 AM Guys, let me know who I can ho a ride with if you have a opening. Have gas money etc, will try to trap small crabs in the river this week.
Never been toggin, what size type of hook?
Got Stripers 10-17-2011, 10:54 AM If it blows like this past weekend I'll opt for the golf course instead, my boat rides low in the bow and would be problematic if it's 4 footers at anchor. What is the launch site and projected fishing location, curious what the options are if it blows hard.
PRBuzz 10-17-2011, 11:27 AM Long range forecast showing Sunday pretty nice, upper 50's and sunny. Will have to wait for the wind/wave forecast.....
Mr. Sandman 10-17-2011, 12:39 PM I just came across this....Is it still on for the 23rd???
I went toggin once a couple weeks ago and it was kinda slow with a lot of shorts. But the water temp has dropped since then.
I have to see if this will work....I kind of promised the wife I would take her to Nantucket that weekend so it may be out for me this year. The 5th is no good for me either so I may be out of luck this year. I will see if I can work some magic.
I did it last year and it was fun. We had a bunch of fish and a lot of laughs.
In any case I will be out there mid week when the weather is nice. The wind has been killer the last few days here.
fish4striper 10-17-2011, 01:21 PM My boats full Niko, TT, my buddy Bill
Scouted out the ramps Goose mentioned, looking to use this one- West Rodney French Boulevard ramp

looks like a nice little weather window for sunday - let's hope it holds out. we will be fishing lower buzzards bay and we are going to try and launch out of new bedford - or anywhere you want to launch and just meet up at the spot. with all this crappy weather the spot probably hasn't had much pressure - it should be stacked up w/ fish :jump1:
Padawan 10-17-2011, 07:13 PM Just hand over all the lures now!!!! im going to catch the beast!!!!!
Mr. Sandman 10-18-2011, 07:09 AM As usual, I over commit to stuff...It is going to be a last min call for me this weekend.... and if I can squeeze it in to my weekend, I will probably have a few anglers from my neck of the woods on board.
If not... I could offload some that are over filled. Hope to see you out there.
Sorry for the indecision on my end, my life is not well structured these days. If anything changes I will post.
Padawan 10-18-2011, 07:15 AM as far as prize. is it per person or per boat. LEts say I have 4 guys on my boat does that mean i need to get 4 lures? or just 1 for the boat and what time we start and finish? and where we weighing all the fish at?

if you want in on the pool you need to contribute a plug per person. we will weigh the fish out on the water as there will be boats launching from different ports. last year we launched around 7:30 or 8 am. no real finish time

You will need 2 plugs per person.
And you will need to weigh your fish on our boat. We will have a certified scale that will cost 1 beer per fish weigh in. Btw make sure everyone on your raft has a saltwater license.

SUN
W WINDS AROUND 10 KT. SEAS 1 FOOT OR LESS.:)
Sea Dangles 10-19-2011, 06:52 AM Great news with the forecast, let's hope it holds up.I tried to get out yesterday for what was supposed to be 5-10,not even close. Went upriver with eels... nice to know there are still some quality bass around but the chocolate milk water means you have to hit them on the head. Lost a serious fish up near Hixbridge...heartbreak for my copilot who is all thumbs.

Got Stripers 10-22-2011, 09:36 AM I'll be out tomorrow with Goose and my son, see you in the am.
Mr. Sandman 10-22-2011, 01:45 PM I hope Sunday will be better for you guys, because it was slow this AM. We got a few but nothing like past years. I was surprised I was expecting more of a bite for this time of year.
Water was murky, blowing 10-15 with a 4-5' swell and 63 deg. I was fishing the same area that we did last year. Inside more the swell laid down.
There was a Viking superstar head boat fishing there too and they moved to several spots before disappearing. A few others stopped by for a bit then moved on.
It should be much nicer tomorrow. 1-2' I think with 5-10. You might want to try some of the reefs in closer to the mainland.
I will give it a week or so and try it again
Good luck guys!!!

PRBuzz 10-23-2011, 04:34 PM Another great togfest! Started out a little snotty but by mid-day waters flat calm. Constant action on the tog, nothing huge (togzilla class) but we came in with out limit of fish all over ~22" long. Beamie broke his cherry toggin today! Fish On boated the heaviest fish of the group. Kippy had a somewhat off day after taking us to school last year...and me just kept pulling in the fish and doing mostly C&R.

:nopics:
fishbones 10-23-2011, 05:13 PM Sea Dangles will now be known as The Togmeister. He absolutely crushed em today, and there were a lot of big ones. He put us on them early and it was non-stop action until the tide slacked. Not to mention, he makes his own killer secret tog rigs.

Sea Dangles 10-24-2011, 06:33 AM I had a great day fishing with Fishbones. First hump was dead but we managed to get on top of them at the next spot. We had at least 2 hours of nonstop action of tog in the 6-8 pound range. Within 20 seconds you had a fish or no bait.Fishing was as good as the company.
Had a good time. Thanks to everyone for coming. Dangles - you are a funny bastard

inTHERAPY 10-24-2011, 08:58 AM one of these times i'll make it as part of the fest. only had a 3 hour window before my youngest soccer game, so I skipped out with my oldest son. It was a bit sporty with the wind direction and dumping tide in buzzards. by the ride in at 10:30 it had laid down nicely though. once i figured that we needed 10 oz to hold bottom, fishing was lock and load. a pb for my boy, first drag puller for him.
PRBuzz 10-24-2011, 09:01 AM Congrats to your son, always nice to hear the scream of a reel..
fishbones 10-24-2011, 10:58 AM I'll post a few pics later tonight or tomorrow. Unfortunately, I didn't get too many pics. Fortunately, the fishing was so good that I didn't have time to take many pics.
Fish On 10-24-2011, 06:01 PM I had a great time as well. We had no problem catching our limit of 22 " plus fish. Phil sure know where to find the tog! Thanks Buzz!

I got blown out early as I only have a 17ft and the north wind killed me -- crushed them Sat

Can someone PM or share the tog rig being used? Hopefully not asking to much but always looking to improve my catch...

WESTPORTMAFIA 10-24-2011, 06:14 PM I did very well on the jig with Asian shore crabs. We dent make it all the way out. We found a good bite with nice fat fish in close. The jig was getting mire action than the regular bait rigs.
