View Full Version : North Shore fall report
nightfighter 10-01-2011, 08:06 AM Dismal from the beach and rocks.... at least in this town.... Boat is ok, as long as I find the macks. Feel it slipping away by the day. Kind of like the Sox's season... so much promise followed by an absolute nosedive.

almost like the football did from Tom in the last game?
american spirit 10-01-2011, 09:04 AM slow with a lot of skunks mixed in. retired from the surf and started fishing for large/smallmouth bass last week. fun.
spinncognito 10-01-2011, 04:41 PM Pretty much the same on Cape Ann. Zero blites and most of the "sharpies" have found it a big challenge to get a bass to hit top-water offerings. I have resorted to fishing bait and have done well this week using fresh dead whole mackerel in the local river. There is at least some baitfish there. None on the shoreline or beaches that I have seen or heard about,
Almost time to start gearing up for smelt season!
Green Light 10-02-2011, 08:24 PM Time to move down the shore?
Adam_777 10-03-2011, 07:07 AM Didn't really start yet.You'll know when it hits.
Rockport24 10-03-2011, 11:18 AM we had a little kayak get together in the lower cape ann area, guys that trolled eels over night did very well (multiple 20-25 lb class fish) during the day on the tube was slim pickings though, but most still caught something.
tattoobob 10-03-2011, 04:24 PM It's been the worst season yet from where I have been fishing

Rockport24 10-04-2011, 09:51 AM I feel like the fall has sucked the past few seasons.. although this year seems to be slightly better in my neck of the woods, still, nothing like 5-6 years ago when peanut bunker blitzes could pop up anywhere.
nightfighter 10-06-2011, 06:54 PM Blitzes yielding good fish in the mix along Lynnshore Drive to Fishemans Beach. Doc got his season best from the surf today.... Been a long time since I've seen a blitz like this within casting distance of shore. Would be great if it heats up for this weekend with the weather report looking good!

i was hoping you were going to say it's over. i can't get myself to do the drive anymore this season.
Clogston29 10-06-2011, 08:37 PM Salem harbor loaded with bait when I was up recently. Some blues cruising around the boat docks too.

gf2020 10-06-2011, 08:43 PM Season is over for me. Boy Scout trip to Martha's Vineyard this weekend. Pull the boat from Boston Harbor next Wednesday and then a final weekend on Lake Winnipesaukee and it will be put away in NH for the winter.
September is usually a great month for me, but this year with lousy weather and too much work, it was a bust.
Rockport24 10-07-2011, 09:37 AM I"m hitting it this weekend from the yak, hopefully TDF is joining me!
nightfighter 10-07-2011, 11:56 AM Same thing this morning, but closer to the end of Nahant causeway later. Not a spotburn. If it's happening, everybody can see it. Guys commuting jump out of their cars and jump in with their suits or waders. Just good to see again. Yak guys were doing really well....
Rockport24 10-07-2011, 12:14 PM nice! thanks for the update. it is great to see again indeed.
The Dad Fisherman 10-11-2011, 05:15 AM I"m hitting it this weekend from the yak, hopefully TDF is joining me!

You're Preaching to the Choir......
tattoobob 10-11-2011, 04:41 PM You didn't miss anything I fished from 6:30 AM Sunday morning to 1 PM Monday and caught one fish 27 inches
I don't even think the fish have started to run yet, or it's over can someone ask the fish and let me know what they said
nightfighter 10-22-2011, 01:23 PM Water temps have dropped to mid 50s over this past week. TunalessGreg and I had our boats out with plenty of live macks and four anglers. One hit between all of us. What a difference a week makes. Noreaster due in on Friday with snow in the hills..... Sux. Might be over....Am considering hauling out this week on the midday moon tides. Codfishing tomorrow.
That's because you were using livies...I did ok w wood this am...

No, No, No ... uhmmm ... I'd prefer that the water stay warm at least until Christmas ... ... I mean that is what I have been asking for ... as I won't be able to fish until sometime near then ... so this so called approaching Noreaster had better turn into a mysterious heat wave or my season is cooked ... :smash:

I'm not so sure i want to know WHAT you did with your wood.
Rockport24 10-24-2011, 04:05 PM Trolled a tube almost the entire length of the neck yesterday with one half-hearted hit to show for it. It's over as far as I'm concerned!
Ran into a bunch of guys trolling livies out there as well with the same results (at least that they told me) You can always tell when people aren't catching though, cause they just seem a lot more interested in how YOU are doing than usual!
Sandy Bay 10-24-2011, 09:11 PM Sandy Bay was filthy with macs on Sat. PM, skittering to and fro, all over the surface around the buoy between the breakwater and Straitsmouth, with birds chasing; but I'm sure that it wasn't being motivated by predatory fish. I recall seeing the same thing this time last year. I don't know what drives it, but presumably it has to do with the season.
Anyway, I jigged up several, which was very easy to do, and swam a couple of them for an hour or so off of Land's End, but no joy. In retrospect, I probably should've stayed in Sandy Bay, and grabbed a bunch for freezing and lobstering next summer!
Rockport24 10-25-2011, 09:56 AM I miss the summer already....
Rockfish9 10-25-2011, 10:29 AM I miss the summer already....
me too.. now i rake pine needles each night instead of fish...
The Dad Fisherman 10-25-2011, 10:44 AM C'mon Joe....Ice fishing is just around the corner :hee:

soon.. I've allready dragged the sled from the corner and been poking around with the gear..... I dont need much ice..this is one of my all time favorite pictures... this little guy got a half a jar of eggs before greed got the best of her... notice all the eggs spit up on the ice..
The Dad Fisherman 10-25-2011, 11:15 AM Started doing the same myself, been poking around and getting things ready...can't wait for the hardwater season. :kewl:
JackK 10-25-2011, 11:22 AM It's one of my goals to get a trout through the ice this year. Only thing I know is that a mealie tipped with salmon eggs is a good bait... But depth, distance from shore, etc is all greek to me.

Once the ice is safe.. I go every weekend.. your welcome to tag along...I fish almost exclusivly for salmonoids..
Sea of Atlas 10-25-2011, 11:27 AM I'm ready to jig some lakers!! Very close second to striper fishing.
The stockies love a bit of earthworm just under the ice. Rainbows also love powerbait.

Jiggin' togue is one of my favorite winter activities...
Sea of Atlas 10-25-2011, 12:24 PM im with you! got hooked on Sebago last year-that place is filled with togue.

JackK 10-25-2011, 01:30 PM Thanks. I'll definitely take you up on that- Maybe TDF will want to join, or even that bum Spinncognito (if we can ever get him out on the hardwater! :rotf2:)
Never caught a laker. I did the Sebago tournament two or three years ago... In a group of twelve, limit of traps each, we had one flag all day... And it was a salmon. Renamed lake Slowbago afterwards.
Sea of Atlas 10-25-2011, 02:09 PM The tourney is a zoo. I like to jig with glow airplane jigs or atomic bucktails tipped with sea smelt. Usually in about 100fow using a flasher, love watch them rocket from 100 to 40fow to smash a jig. I dont camp out, no fish in 15 minutes, i move holes.

If I can walk safely, I wouldn't mind tagging along either ...
JackK 10-25-2011, 06:52 PM At the very least I'm going to try and organize a few informal ice fishing gatherings- thinking Chebacco, Pleasant, Johnsons to name a few... Details at safe ice!!
Rockport24 10-26-2011, 02:40 PM Hey JackK, if you bring that beef stew you made at the S-B ice thing last year, I"m in!
I might actually break down and buy some traps this year....

Now thats the chit I'm talkin bout!!!!!! Last year was my first real year ice fishing.....Completely fired up for this year!!!!
nightfighter 10-27-2011, 07:19 AM Well this thread took a turn.....
Never fished on the ice... But did get new replacement innerboots for my Sorels delivered yesterday.
Will drive the shoreline for another week. Don't see a window for the boat, so going to haul out on Tuesday. That way the boat won't be on the street during Halloween...
Rockfish9 10-27-2011, 07:27 AM Sorry for the Hijack... but.. it looks like a get Nothshore get together is in order... I do most of my fishing in new Hampshire... but there are no shortage of fish north of Boston on the hardwater...
I've got plenty of gear for anyone that has never done it... I'm allready trapping bait for the season.... I'll start a north shore ice fishing get together thread...
saltyric 10-27-2011, 07:33 AM Ross- I hauled Tuesday.....Had the morning off, tides aligned. Always a sad day. Will be hitting the surf atleast once more and doing some scouting.
Rockfish- Count me in.
nightfighter 10-27-2011, 07:52 AM Might haul Sunday after looking at tides. 11 foot tide, high at 1421. Last day for launch service as well. Will give me enough time to powerwash and unload before dark. It is worse than first day of school as a kid.... The downside of a center console is its exposure in these temperatures. Really want to be in a pilothouse, even for the inshore codfishing. Time to ho some rides on other people's boats.

I got enough gear to take care of you Ross, I have a full setup for 2 anglers for a full day on the ice....besides I need to repay you for getting me hooked on stripers :hihi:
I'm getting psyched for it already....fired up the auger the other night to see if it would fire up, getting all the gear together and stopped by Cabelas and picked up some odds and ends that I will need.

Uhh, yeah. I have enough equipment for half of an ice fishing tourney. Last count was something like 40 tips.

me too.. my basement looks like down stairs in Kittery when I haul it all out..amazing what you accumulate through the years...
Clogston29 10-27-2011, 06:41 PM Surprised at all the ice talk. Trout and bass still hitting good now. Why wait for ice? The shocker and I had a good night bass fishing last night.

nightfighter 10-27-2011, 06:49 PM One more weekend with the boat, haul Sunday. Then a couple more tries in the surf. Have to admit, I don't last long in the low 40 degree weather though....getting old.
Clogston29 10-27-2011, 06:55 PM Nasty weather this weekend. Hoping for good weather next weekend. Got a sitter for Saturday day and night and planning to drive south for one last shot.

Rockfish9 10-28-2011, 06:37 AM Last goal for the season would be to catch in November....
It's been quite a few years( just about 25) but I had a very memorable night off of the surf on Plum Island the day after thanks giving... all large fish.. it's just a matter of what you can endure..so it's not out of the question.. this time of year.. you have to be there when they show.. usualy no ryme or reason why or when they do...
Clogston29 10-28-2011, 08:20 AM that's definately true. back when we had more free time on our hands (pre kids), luds and I got into fish in the snow up in Marblehead one morning in late november when we decided to go just to get out for a bit. No fish showing, but picked them up on bucktails and storm shads worked slow and low. Nothing too big, but fun. Tough to justify those low probability kinds of trips now.
i set a goal of getting one every month for a calendar year (holdovers included) a few years back. got fish and marblehead in november and a few in december and january at the dam, but february got real cold and i quit.
...I agree, too early to pack it in...decent feed this morning...

tunaless greg 10-29-2011, 07:29 PM northern vermont today, looked like december with the snow storm, got back to the the head, it was raining and windy. 60 degree weather forcasted for later in week, both boats stay in (if they are still on mooring after this wind). I can live with 2 cod a man for a few weeks, April is a long way away. Love to pick up one more bass for the smoker.
Sandy Bay 10-31-2011, 09:29 AM ...from another web site, posted yesterday:
"Was at a friends house up at eastern point and just before the Pats got their beating there was a decent feed between eastern point and ten lb. island..."
In the harbor, no less! ...would've be nippy, for sure, but certainly doable; I wonder if they're still there! ...still have the boat in on the Annisquam, and needing to haul it, but this makes me wonder.
