View Full Version : OTW CUP Fiasco
piemma 10-02-2011, 10:38 AM Interesting. Wasn't yesterday the big OTW shindig?
I thought there would be 100 post about how great the band was (too loud 2 years ago), the beer too warm 2 years ago. Maybe a lot of guys (like me) are fed up with the hype. Or maybe Falmouth was too far to drive.
Me. I'm done with the Cup stuff, the magazine, the pins, the whole thing. Going back to fishing the way I use to 30 years ago.

Me too.
BigFish 10-02-2011, 10:56 AM Anyone here attend?? Any team S-Bers??
JohnR 10-02-2011, 11:22 AM It was OK, band was best it has been IMO. Location was OK - drive a bit far. $5 for a bud draft meant only two were drowned...
More than a few S-Bers around... I saw at least 30
redcrbbr 10-02-2011, 11:53 AM Great to see a bunch of friends, the band was very good, weather was also very nice, heck I even found a parking spot and saved $10. thought the traffic leaving was going to be a bear, it wasn't. even stopped in and said hey to the folks at eastmans.
Going back to fishing the way I use to 30 years ago.
Stealth:hidin:
I'm going back to the way I fished when I first started out. Purely to have fun, relax and enjoy the outdoors...
$5 for a bud draft? that's insane. Glad I don't drink anymore...

Chump change. I paid 8.50 a beer at fenway a couple weeks ago. I could have paid 7.50 for another brand but the lines were too long. Scam

tattoobob 10-02-2011, 04:05 PM I couldn't be bothered, I can't understand why have it on one of the best fishing weekends of the year
I agree with Rob fishing is all about fun and no stress
WESTPORTMAFIA 10-02-2011, 04:07 PM Come on! None of the online big mouths roasted Greg myerson? From the nonsense posted about him on the boards I figured there would be riots. Seems that nobody had sack to call him a cheat in real life? I'm sure he was there.

I'd pay $8.50 to drink your urine before I would support OTW or their destructive tourney.

redlite 10-02-2011, 06:39 PM Though I will biactch about the location as a PIA for travel, I will say that overall I had the best time at a Stripper Fest so far. Yeah, had to pay 10 f'n BS bucks to park a hike a way which was BS, I enjoyed it. Not havin to worry about bein here and there and just sit behind the scenes was a nice change. And this was the 1ST Striper fest in 6 yrs I was sober. Life responsibiltys have taken their toll. I got to catch up and talk with some of the old backside crew i hadn't seen or talked to in years. Made me cry fo days and a way of life gone by. Glad to see em still alive. Could care less about the other BS. Glad Salisbury won the 10k. Third time was a charm for him. He deserved it. Sucked whoever the guy was that won the boat. Just like them there big lotto jack pots where a rich person always wins. I went up to congratulate the guy and you would hve thought he already had a truck full of nickels and you just gave him another one. He could have cared less. Only reason I went was for my chance at that boat and it didn't even phase him that he won.
If I had won it, security would still be chasing me around right now with my pants around my ankles screamin fo the whole world to kiss my arse.
Greg let me take some pics with the pendin world record fish and it is MASSIVE. Honored regardless and Glad I got the opportunity.
OTW was LUCKY it didn't rain or we'd a been up to our A holes in mud with the set up they had. No bathroom lines which was nice.
Whether tournaments and the Stripper Cup are fo you and your moral principles, don't care, I still enjoy it and what it tries to embody in striped bass fishing and our small brother hood of "liars and cheats". They really strived to emphasize their minimization of purely massacring fish for the sake of a tournament. IE nmber killed and weighed (most which were commercial killed/fish sold anyway) And if I had actually won a weekly prize this year I would have felt beaten compared to years past. Weekly shore got you a BOAT rod, a reel, and a fillet knife. Whooped - d- doo.
I will admit i was suprised at the turnout given the location.
I drove home and was happy........Till i got outta the truck and heard the screamin baby........Shoulda had a few of them there beers guys wanted ta buy me......:devil2:

mag minnow 10-02-2011, 07:09 PM "I will say that overall I had the best time at a Stripper Fest"... so far
Redlite...How can you NOT have a good time at a Stipper Fest.
Moses 10-02-2011, 07:16 PM I always have a good time at Striper Fest due to the people I go with/meet up with. Thats been the reason and will always be the reason. No stress for me because I don't kill myself all season trying to catch large so I place. Location wasn't bad but I liked the Canal location best so far.
Like Mike said, got a chance to meet & chat with Greg M. Man that fish was big and I didn't realize how big Myerson was too, I'm 6.1.
Mike P 10-02-2011, 07:25 PM Whatever happened to golden ticket holders getting the first beer for free? IIRC, that was the deal up at Harpoon.
Bud is still a step up from warm Gansett, though. :cheers2:
scottw 10-03-2011, 06:04 AM thought they did a tremendous job producing it, some people can always find faults to point out but it seemed well attended from all parts of the east coast, band was good, nice location...I was a bit disappointed that Redlight wasn't sporting his baby in one of those snuggy things across his chest and a binky on a lanyard:), made a family day of it and hit the Heritage Museum on the way which was fantastic, the longest line that we had to wait in was for the Kiddie Bouncy things, no lines for food or beverages, love to see more tackle vendors...only expected some Sebile's in the weekly 2nd but there was also a gift card for West Marine and a pair of Costa sunglasses, so I considered that a nice score:)
tlapinski 10-03-2011, 06:33 AM I attended, and as was previously said, was happy overall minus the parking mess and the asinine location. I can deal with the $5 beer as that is standard pricing for a drink at a sporting event these days anyway, and I didn't go to get hammered. (that was last year as I drank from the cup. :uhuh:) They advertised the location as "only 1 hour form both Boston and Providence." Too bad it is still an hour+ to get to those places for a lot of us. It was good as always to see many of the guys I haven't seen in some time, and was hopeful for my shot at the boat. I didn't enjoy hearing some of the Team Striper guys bitching and moaning about how they lost though. We'll see if their "threats" not to participate next year hold. Pretty sure we have heard that before from them...
intrepid24 10-03-2011, 08:25 AM when winning becomes everything, then you have nothing.
just sayin' !!
:grins:
Chubby-Chaser 10-03-2011, 10:32 AM It was a pain to leave the canal and drive to Falmouth, but I think this was the best set up yet. The band sounded great and I like the vendors on the outside with the tables in the middle. I didn't drink or eat so the cost of that stuff want an issue for me.
IMO the whole cup thing has jumped the shark, too many controversies over the years and is it me or do those two sound like bumbling fools on stage? They talk over each other and in general the presentation ceremony is poorly executed. They have been at this for years, you would think they would have the routine down pat.
A few years back I cancelled my subscription because it was the same old thing, I could go back to the prior year for that month and see some of the same content. I like collecting the pins and have one from every year on my surf bag, I noticed the one from 2011 was rusting. Not a big deal, but we fish in the saltwater so haw about using a metal that wont rust in 3 months.
I probably wont join next year

That's why the Schaefer Cup died.
SINGING REELS 10-03-2011, 11:45 AM One could say that because of many reasons the Schaefer Cup did not last.
Winning at any cost becomes old hat and when you add in many of the other conflicting regulations that did not provide ethical conduct to win, you soon have a tournement that only generates bad influences.
One could also say that tournement had some good points and some not so good. It all begins with good intention, but in the end it all comes down to ethics and truth.
Cheating is a way of life for some, when it comes to tournements , that is why every regulation must be thought out to hopefully prevent such actions from affecting the results.
Mike J. 10-03-2011, 11:51 AM The lure demonstration tank with a water clarity of 1-2 inches was Awesome!!!!! The sebile magic swimmer would disappear when it hit the water then re-appear at the rod tip... :rotf2:
Overall I liked the location better than previous venues. plenty of free parking if you wanted to walk 5 minutes more than it took from the Pay to park lot.
I would never support a kill tournament as long as I live.

Steve08753 10-03-2011, 05:44 PM I have fished The Striper Cup and attended Striperfest for the past 3 years with the good fortune to be on a 3 year old team that has either placed very well or won the cup and I have consistantly enjoyed going to Striperfest in spite of a 5 hour drive. On The Water did what I found to be a very stand up thing this year by having a mount done for the 77.5 Peter Vican caught. You can think what you choose about Mr. Meyerson's fish, I certainly have my opinion about that one, but I don't think anyone questions the validity of Vican's fish and OTW had no obligation to have that mount done but had the class to do it anyway. I look foward to fishing it next year and tough I hope my team does better than this year it's not that important and you won't find we whining about it like one of the Team Striper guys was doing to me.
Sea Dangles 10-03-2011, 09:29 PM But your team did whine about Myersons fish to OTW.
I wasn't there, but I heard the poster with Myersons fish that was hanging up at the venue said"Greg Myerson, Team Striper" on it!???

I have my opinion, too. And it's this---if you doubt the validity of Myerson's fish, either put up, or shut up.
Your opinion is horribly transparent, so---why not state your proof that it's not legit?
I've had enough of all the snide innuendo---mere speculation without a shred of evidence, IMO.

hey, you hang with basshound ?
My buddy who was one of the vendors said that during the awards ceremony someone got caught stealing a VS and some other stuff. Did anyone else hear this?
Jackbass 10-04-2011, 06:50 AM OTW may run the tourney well and it may be a mice event. The whole thing seems to lack credibility to me. #1 they pay to have the Rhodie fish mounted and it counts toward the cup? Then they flip flop on Myersons fish? What is that all about? Sounds like BS. I am not a huge fan of the tournament but regardless. The Guy obviously fishes his ass off he has a pending WR but OTW won't allow it in the tourney. They should provide explanation as to why the flip flop. The Guy has apparently toppled one of the most coveted records in the fishing world. He should get all the credit due or be Misproven. Other wise all the background noise is simply chatter and innuendo

OTW is not saying anything about the validity of the record fish but about the validity of whether the fish qualified for the Team standings. I have heard a couple different theories descriptions of what happened to determine whether it should be allowed or not but I haven't heard anything definitive or concrete. Certainly another case of no answer will be good enough for everyone.
I still have my doubts about that Charles Church fish.
fatcow 10-04-2011, 04:51 PM Why couldn't the $10000 ticket be in my box. Great job by OTW . It's all about having a good time with ur friends not like alot of the drama said here. Its time for all the Ma guys to team up and bring the cup back to Ma
