I know he won't get much love from this crowd here but love him or hate him he was a big reason for the AFL/NFL merger and the NFL existence on the level it does today.
It's a shame he wouldn't step down when the times passed him by, but like every thing he did in his life he did things his way and said screw everyone who didn't like it.
Rest in peace Al

Won't question his contributions to the game. One of the major forces in the game from AFL's inception through the 60's (maybe early 70's) It is too bad he wouldn't step down when his time had come as too many will remember an old man, not the force he once was....

First I am hearing this Ron?? There he was in the box last weekend watching the Pats kick ass on his Raiders?? But seriously I am shocked? I agree with all you said Ron and RIP AL! Glad he got to enjoy at least the very good beginning of this season for his team.

Kind of ironic the last game he saw was the Raiders/Pats given some of the history (Hamilton roughing the passer call, Tatum/Stingley, Snow bowl/tuck game)
And I wouldn't exactly call last week an ass kicking. Was actually a good game till our idiot quarterback Campbell threw the int inside the 10 with no Raider anywhere near the throw ! And Richard Seymour gave the pats more yards in the 1st qtr that they gained on their own.
I knew for the last 2 years his health was failing, so this did not come as a complete surprise.
Hope there was a plan left in place to go forward in right direction.
For sure now will have to hire a gm.

They did a moment of silence for him at the Pat's game tonight.
