Well, after 6 & 1/2 years at my "last" company, I was laid off the other day. I got R.I.F.'d . They didn't even kiss me first, just *$%# me :af: so now I'm looking for new work...

What effect will this have on this website? None. The site will survive this as there is enough allocated to keep it going just fine. I won't be buying anything new for the site but we S-B is in decent shape...

If any of you fine gentleman and gentleladies know of any IT work from Wareham to Westerly, I'm lookin'. My last position was with a process/bio/pharma engineering company.

Basic History 2000-Last Thurs - IT Projects Manager
VPN/Intranet/Routers/Infrastructure/New Servers/Security
1997-2000 - MIS Manager
Just about everything /servers/infrasturcture/
96-97- Network Admin
Servers / Desktops

Solid on MS NT4.0/W2K/XP, Netware 3 thru 5, Cisco routers / PIX, Linux, some Web Developing, plus all of the typical stuff...

I will be tweaking my resume this week and I will also begin to study for some more certifications for work I've been doing for a while but now need a slip of paper to show it..

Yup..........me to John. Got it 2 weeks ago. Worked for wonderful Lucent. Not by choice.......they bought us. Problem is...60....who wants an old man. Production tech. Thinking of changing fields......would you like fries with that sir !!!! O well.....life must go on. I tihnk.

Hey JohnR, really sorry to hear that buddy, like somebody else on the board said, everything happens for a reason, I am a firm believer in that!!! It happened to me about 10 years ago and ended up here in mass to find work. Well I ended up with better pay, and met BC and got hooked on striper fishing.

I have gone thru many trials and tribulations over the past several years as you know and believe me LIFE does go on. Enjoy this time with your family and use this time to reflect on your own life as we get caught up in things big time with run and gun working everyday. You might be suprised at what you end up seeing at the end of the tunnel.

Not much job security in the world today: Cop, Fireman, Mailman, and Public School Teacher or working for few select corporations are about the only jobs worth having security-wise. At least they can look forward to a good pension.

If you work in private industry your whole life, you’ll need to retire with a 401K account with about 500,000 (in 2003 dollars) in it to avoid being one of those cat-food eating oldsters living on a paltry social security check.
But Gee...I’m really surprised President Bush has not been able to turn things around for us with his brilliant economic policy.
:soon: Those tax cuts for the richest 1% will stimulate investment which in turn will lead to more jobs.....Either that, or they'll just pocket the money and say, "Screw hiring anyone...I'm buying a beach house in Rhode Island!"

well i'm collecting un-enjoyment now ... fixing everything in sight and growing a garden to help put some healthy food on the table.

so i reccomend you do the same if you have a spot. time to go catch a trout or two for dinner and i'm glad i bought thousands of dollars worth of tackle while i had the money knowing all to well that some day i might "have to" fish for my food. and..... i AM.;)

I were laid off 11 (1992) years ago and I know how you feels about it.

As a man, we definitely need job to support our family. Though sometimes members of it are not so lovely, we still love them and want to take care of them.

Hopefully, the unemployment pay check can sustain your dailily living a bit and my suggest to you are:

1. See whether you can have your own business in i.e. striper fishing or tour guide in these area
2. Attending whatever recruiting conference is available in this area and keep yourself opened to a change

yeah, john, it's a bad time. stil see a lot of I/T jobs, but tough battling thru everyone else out there. you have great skills, so you should be working soon.

That SUCKS ! I was there too about 12 years ago . Id say send a reume to where I work ( been around for 300 years ) . we seldom lay off and they do hire people to configure machines in our desktop dept . I know its a long long ride ! Good luck searching and stay out of Boston . This may be the perfect time to leave that busy city for a quieter surounding .

I too was without a job in 1998 after working for Quebecor Printing for 30 years. My computer skills were pretty good and landed me a job with EMC. Most area people know what happened there after 9/11. Now doing Fire Alarm inspections, it's a job, am also still looking. Look at the bright side, warmer weather is coming and usually when a door closes .....another opens. Best of luck, your skills should find you something soon. Enjoy the free time while it lasts.
