Power came back on around 3am the other day.
Got woken to smoke alarms going off, thought the house was on fire.
Surge protector behind tv was smoking.
Tv junk.
Tv in daughters room junk.
2 year old Whirlpool Duet wash machine not working.
Desk top computer has no sound, think sub woofer fried.
Outside lights on garage won't come on, think motion sensor is junk.
A few other things ect....
Called home owners, waiting for them to come out.

Hope the grow lights survived

AN oak TREE DROPPED on the power line that
goes from the short pole in our yard to the house
snapping the lines....and yes i believe the green flash was the
pole capacitor thang exploding as we were without power for four days.... another house down the street had two trees drop right thru it.

Hopefully the insurance policy will cover it.... i'll find out soon

Tree limb in Mansfield causes 8000V power surge into cable (crosses power line with cable), that will do some equipment damage!

Whole house ups. I suffered no damage or outage, everytime i read about this stuff it makes me want to put in a whole has ups and backup genset.

I'm an electrical contractor, I see this a few times a year. A REAL screwing would be the insurance not paying at all. $500 is a lot better than nada.
I had one customer who had a fire because of a treechick falling on the lines. They tried not to pay calling it an "act of God " TOTAL BS!
In the end they did pay (almost 2 years later)

Those power strips that are $6 from Home Depot are useless. For any kind of high-value electronics, you should have them plugged into a UPS or, minimally a quality Surge Strip. We've been programed to protect our computers, but now we need to start plugging our LED/LCD tvs and all components that connect to the tv into quality Surge Strips as well.

Raven, with regards to your computer, sometimes it's only the power module that gets fried. If you have a friend with a spare, I'd suggest asking them to swap out the power supply and see if that works. Then you can buy a replacement power supply as opposed to having to buy a whole new machine.

It sounds to me like you lost the Neutral from the street but still have the 2 hot legs (at 120 volts each). Anyway, you can install a whole house surge protector in your main panel, but it DOESN'T protect against lightning. the thing that bugs me is even with the whole house surge their warranty states you still HAVE to have a backup surge strip on the individual tv's and appliances.

What JohnnyD said is true also, those cheap surge strips are garbage! Its crazy to pay more than $1000+ for a tv and blu ray etc... then buy some crap strip made in Korea.
The other thing is a lot of people don't realize the difference between a "surge" strip and a "power" strip. A power strip is just giving you 6 open places to plug in with NO protection. It needs to be a surge suppressor

Honestly, in the end you were probably screwed from the start, a lost neutral isn't something that you can be "pretected" from. Surge suppressors aren't designed that way

Raven, I'd discourage you from going around and seeing if the plug on the power supply fits. There are not always different connectors for different voltage/current requirements. You need to check the Volt/Amp requirements of the device and match that with the power supply. Voltage is the most important, the amperage value needs to be the same or higher.

i went to best buy and bought another power supply
that was 450 watts instead of the original which was 300 watts
I hooked it up and everything is BACK :happy:

except for ONE thing >>>>Raider RON<<<<
the speaker system was fried so i went back and bought a Sony set up
and it sounds ever so sweet...with the sub woofer.... 59 clams

back like it never happened...

Because a fuse can take upwards of seconds to heat the fuse element and open it. A surge is MILLI seconds

You lost the neutral (return path) if you had a short it would have tripped the main. Basically had either of the hot legs came in contact with the ground or neutral it would have shorted and popped the main.

Easier way to visualize would be a lamp. You plug it in & it turns on. If you cut just 1 of the wires it stops working but doesn't trip the breaker. Doesn't matter if its the hot or neutral wire that's
cut. IF either wire touches the other it trips the circuit

Also, if you had a surge rather than a lost neutral then the answer is the main isn't capable of stopping the surge, its not designed that way
