My console trim gauge does not show the engine position any more. I bought a new gauge, but i'm not sure if that is the problem. There is a sending unit on the engine bracket.

I tried to take some voltage readings at the old gauge, but I could not figure out what I was looking for. ie resistance, variable voltage. I can't tell if the problem is at the gauge or the sending unit.

Any help would be great.

First thing I would check is the ground wires. If it looks iffy at all clean it to the bare metal and put some anti-corrosion goop on there. If it worked last season and it doesn't work now...it is probably a corrosion issue or the sensor died. There has got to be some sensor somewhere on the trim unit that measures the throw of the hydraulic piston.

Do you get any reading at all ?

One thing I don't have that I wish I did is the actual technical manual for the engine...( that would show you where it is) I bet it costs a bundle to get one.

I pulled the sensor last night. Took it into my workshop. There was some corrosion around the shaft but not bad.

It had free play and is spring loaded to keep it against the engine as it moves. I put my meter on it and it read a nice smooth varying resistance as I moved it. So it seems to be OK (if that is how it functions). My guess is that it varies the voltage to the gauge as it moves, Putting a meter at the gauge did not help me. But if the sensor is good, I can move further up the line.
I might just buy a new gauge and try it. I think they are short money (less than 20 $).

Thanks, and I will also check all grounds when I re-install it.

i am having trouble with the tilt. one one of my motor and the other works fine. sometimes it just doesn't want to work. i will be down there tomorrow night and i am hoping that it is the fuse.

Just came back from the shop, he said if the sensor is giving resistance throughout its range,,,its good.

They feel its the gauge, because 9 times out of 10 thats the problem. I will check the voltage again at the gauge and see.

New gauge is 30 $.
