View Full Version : New beer bar opening in Plymouth
Slipknot 11-04-2011, 05:16 PM Friends of ours are opening up a new rest./bar in Plymouth center called The New World Tavern.
I just spent the last month building a new bar for the place and still have 15 ft. of wall cabinet to get done but it will open any day now.
It has 30 different beers on tap
it will have a pub menu and also a dinner menu.
it used to be the Guru lounge and Indian food rest.
completely different inside now.
it's a small place almost across from Sam Diegos and on the same side as T-Bones.
If you are in the area and are thirsty for a beer or hungry, check it out.
John said it was ok to spam :)
basswipe 11-05-2011, 08:22 AM Haven't been up that way in years.Sounds good.
Just out of curiosity what finish was used on the bar top?
Slipknot 11-05-2011, 09:09 AM I used a 2 part finish that uses an acid catalyst. I had no time to use 2 part urethane like I wanted to since they could not wait the 21 days it would take for full cure and it would show scratches all over, so it was cheaper and quicker this way. They are happy and it looks great. I used commercial conversion varnish in satin for the rest of the furnishings.

We use conversion varnish quite a bit.
Did you use vinyl sealer under the cv?Some years back I refinished the mahogany table tops for a local restaraunt and the sample failed. The issue was that the owners wanted grain fill.Sprayed the cv straight over the fill and it flaked off.Come to find that I needed to use vinyl sealer over the fill.I now use it regardless because you never know.
Slipknot 11-05-2011, 10:41 AM No , it is self sealing and weaker if you use ML Campbell CV over vinyl sealer. certain stains or glaze may require a barrier coat of that but not what I used. I used a level sealer to get a heavy build, then the CV gloss topcoats

As far as the cv goes I've always used the Sherwin Kemvar which you have to catalyze.
I've never had trouble over ML Campbell stains.Love the Woodsong II stains and so far any topcoat loves it.I grain filled those table tops with Behlan Pour-O-Pak which is an oil-based grain filler.Kemvar didn't like it which is why I ended up using the vinyl sealer.
Love talking shop with someone who knows!
Moses 11-05-2011, 06:25 PM Frequent that area quite often, will they be open tomorrow?
Slipknot 11-06-2011, 08:53 AM not sure Mike
last I heard they were waiting for a Fire inspection, and they don't make an appt. , just show up so you're at their mercy I guess.
facebook showed they got their sign up finally, my wife told me.
When I get my part done, I'll post some pics.
basswipe, I didn't know you did inside stuff too, thought you were an outside guy. Sherwin W. makes a great product, I used to use them, too pricey and you can't beat that ML Campbell stain, easy to use. I like simple, people don't want to pay the money for complicated and i can't compete with the huge cabinet companies.

Slipknot 11-08-2011, 05:24 PM Opening the place this Thursday :btu:
basswipe, you are lucky to have that kind of work, that's cool. I bet you learn a lot doing restorations and other high end stuff.
MarshCappa 11-16-2011, 10:50 AM I'm going to have to check this place out. Anybody going anytime soon?
Slipknot 11-16-2011, 10:54 AM I think you should go and also speak to the owners and mention you know me, they have a back room they plan to open up soon and have a stage for live bands :) might be a good place for your band to play sometime.
I might check it out later this week depending on what the wife has planned

Sweet! Send me a PM if you're going there this weekend. I have a gig Fri in Norwell but maybe I could go on Sat. Sounds like my kind of place. How's biz for you? We should talk cuz our industries overlap and I may have some leads for you on getting more work.
Slipknot 11-16-2011, 12:41 PM I'll let you know, sure.
I have some work for now , always need more. Just finished a nice set of cherry bookcases in Weston a few weeks ago.

Might have to give it a try when I'm thirsty!
The beer list, which no doubt changes regularly, is well chosen, with a range of styles and brewers represented. On Saturday night the 32 taps included Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale, Dogfish Head Sah'Tea, Pretty Things Jack D'Or, Wachusett Imperial Pumpkin, and Blatant IPA.
That's right around the corner from a British Beer Company so you could work a nice double header. No food at that BBC so this makes for a nice option.
Bigcat 11-16-2011, 03:23 PM What the area needs is a good cigar bar.

That, and a classy adult entertainment club would be nice.

That place is not too far from me. I think we should have a s-b get together over the winter there.

JohnnySaxatilis 12-08-2011, 07:16 PM i dated a chick from plymouth 2 summers ago, she said that indian place sucked, and had a bad rep from locals!
Sounds like a great replacement, (dogfish sha'tea whats that all about?)

I like to mix it up a bit. Sometimes Providence, sometimes Brockton, sometimes even Stoughton if I'm across the street and get bored. More options is better.

I wish I had seen this. GregW and I were there last Thursday with a couple other people. Were you sitting at the bar and had a fishing shirt on? We were at the high top table near the door.
Nice little place with a great selection of beers.

Yup, that was me (MV Derby shirt).
Slipknot 01-09-2012, 12:36 PM I saw the owner , Roman, on Saturday and he said some of my fishing friends came in. Thanks for trying it out. They had a band Friday night and the place was hopin'
GregW 01-09-2012, 02:32 PM Myself and everyone in my party had a good time and liked the place.
I might go back again in the near future if anyone wants to head down.
Mojo7 01-18-2012, 01:36 PM Was going to go to T-Bones this Thursday for a few beers. I think we'll try this place instead.
sokinwet 01-18-2012, 03:46 PM "that indian place sucked, and had a bad rep from locals"
Played a blues jam there a while back...room had the worst sound of anyplace I've ever played. Decent house system but "warehouse like" rear room had ceilings that had to be 30 ft....like sticking your head in a muddy echo chamber. Hope the new place changes that!
fishbones 01-20-2012, 01:23 PM Went there again last night. Still pretty good.
ProfessorM 01-20-2012, 09:01 PM may try it tomorrow nite. Plymouth BBC is too friggin loud to have a conversation in.
