It might be a little early, but I thought I would announce the Fourth Annual Bomba Bros Ice Tourney, brought to you by S-B.com.

Date - Saturday, January 14, 2012
Site - Comet Pond, Hubbardston, MA
Time - 7:00 Am to 2:00 Pm
Entry - $15 or Custom Wood Plug

Last year's event was a challenge due to conditions, with about 40 participants. Good food, good times, and awesome prizes! I can't recall who won the big award. Cheap lodging is close, about six miles from the lake. The Bombas will be there the night before, so we'll have festivites at the local Williams Restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights.

Please RSVP to this thread if you plan to attend. It's a great time, and a fun way to hang out with the S-B.com crowd before the fishing show scene starts.

There's a bait shop across from the parking lot of the lake called Doctors of Da Bait, which opens at 5 AM for your fishing needs.

Rules are as follows:

Official Bomba Bros Ice Fishing Tournament Rules:

Fishing to begin as soon as horn is sounded (7 AM) and will proceed until tournament has ended at 2 PM, when the horn has sounded. Participants will have 5 minutes after the 2 PM Horn to weigh in all final fish. Any fish weighed in after 2:05 PM (time measured via Rick Bombardier’s cell phone) will be disqualified.

All participants must pay or surrender an entry fee equal to either one, custom made wooden striped bass fishing lure or $15. Entry fee must be paid prior to a participant placing a tip up or fishing rod in the water, or the participant will be disqualified. Fish cannot be weighed until the entry fee has been surrendered to the judges.

In no way are the persons Richard G. Bombardier, Jr. and/or Michael J. Bombardier responsible for the following areas, either personally or financially:
Personal injury to participants.
Requirement by Massachusetts State Law to be in possession of a valid Massachusetts Fishing License.
Personal conduct of participants.
Safety or welfare of any or all participants.

Official weigh in procedures are as follows:
All participants must bring prospective fish to the pre-determined weigh-station and be weighed by a pre-determined judge. Judges are appointed by Richard G. Bombardier, Jr. and/or Michael J. Bombardier. Any pre-determined judge has the explicit right to weigh fish and record results, and the judge’s findings shall be found to be comlpetely objective at time of weigh in. There shall be no challenge to judge’s said finding by a contestant, as contestants shall initial record along with judge weighing contestant's catch. Said judge will record the weight of the fish, and said judge’s record of weight shall stand toward and consideration of prize for the tournament.

Any prospective fish must be brought to the weigh-station alive. The fish will be weighed and the fish's weight recorded, along with the prospective angler’s name. Each weighed fish will then be put back into the ice at the weigh station, through a hole, immediately. Weighed fish may not be kept by an individual, unless subsequently marked by the judge, with a knife, which shall be done by severing the weighed fish’s tail, so the fish may be identified as not to be re-weighed.

All weighing shall be performed with a scale designated by Richard G. Bombardier, Jr. and/or Michael J. Bombardier.

Unlike the last three years, due to the new location, winning fish will not be separated by species. Gross weight will decide the winner. Depending on the number of participants, we imagine that there will be 10 regular prizes and one special t-shirt prize sponsored by the printer of the shirts (one dollar from the sale of each shirt will be offered).

Fishing Rules:
A fish that is caught shall be submitted by the angler who plays the fish to the hole. Fish must be submitted by an individual who had physical hands on the line that brings the fish to the hole.

Fishing in teams in commonplace among ice fishing anglers; however, a fish may only be submitted by the angler that played the fish to the hole. .

If any person is suspected of team weigh-ins, they may be disqualified by Richard G. Bombardier, Jr. and/or Michael J. Bombardier.

It should be noted that the fisherman who played the fish to the hole must weigh the fish!

In conclusion:
I affirm that I am in compliance with this document.
I affirm that I accept all said rules of the tournament.
I will not hold either Richard G. Bombardier, Jr. or Michael J. Bombardier responsible for any disputes of this contract.
I will fish my hardest to win this tournament in a fair and true manner.

There's bass in there, too. No pike, though. We can pick a different spot next year with pike.

I like the change in location and the nearby bait and tackle shop.

If you can recall our room was destroyed before we opened the door. We had to have them fix the open window letting the 0 degree chill into our unheated room. Then have them put the bathroom door back on its hinges because it was not attached. (its hard to crap or shower when there is a big door falling on your head). Once all fixed we returned to our room that had zero heat again. So Sadam the shoebomber put us into another zero degree room with no heat. Then e got mad when I started swearing at him and called the police who gladly took us to the hotel down the street that had heat. So we cuddled up in our warm beds and woke up to a freezing room anyway because we didn't shut the door all of the way and it was wide open in the morning:devil2: I'm gonna sleep in a sleeping bag this year. Oh yeah and the 6 pounds of dead beetles in the window cils (GROSS)

Just a heads up............They are not gonna be getting much in the way of Salmon this year, maybe a dozen fish. Might be worth thinking bout a different place.

Too late. I already booked my non-refundable hotel in Gardner and designed a shirt.

Have faith! I remember one of the years we were scared about Sturbridge. One of the reasons that we picked the location is that it is one of the first to freeze ponds in MA.

We'll be there. Kind of place where you can get not a flag all day and just when youre going to leave you get a 20lb Salmon on the line. Deep clean water. Some nice sized perch as well as some good sized bass but limited catches. This place gets a lot of pressure so if it is only 12 Salmon they will get caught pretty quick.

I think with the long nights, we should be fine with no more 40's after next week. I can still remember driving past Long Pond on the way to Naked Xmas with no ice there on the 24th, and we had plenty of ice by the tourney.

We're going to make a call a week from Saturday. I've been looking at the weather and we should have a decent 9 day stretch starting tomorrow.

I'm already booked for the motel for two unrefundable nights, so I wouldn't like to lose the $130 on the lodgings. I plan to take a trip out there a week from Saturday.

ahhhh ha ha ha

It all depends on the conditions. I've seen it go 4" with temps low at night and just above freezing during the day in two weeks (it was more like 5"). It's all about when the skim ice sets up, really. If it sets up today, then we could get good progression until early next week, when it should really start to thicken.

i think you have to factor in the WIND Chill

because it is real Nasty cold today 31 with high wind
in my neck of the woods, so colder up there
so Bill's prediction by new years is spot on...

Wind Chill has no effect on making ice, Air Temp is Air temp....that just has to do with how cold we feel

i thought it chilled the ground too...
and the soil is the biggest heat insulator

all wind will do is chill the Water/Land down quicker to the current Air Temp....so if its 33 Deg. with 50 mph winds and a wind chill of 15 deg. the water still won't get any colder than the Air Temp of 33 Deg.....it will just get there faster

Wind Chill is the Effective Temperature that we feel from the Wind+Temp. Body Heat will leave your body at the effective temperature rate vs the actual Air Temp rate.

If its 33 Deg Air temp and a Windchill of 15 Degrees....your body will lose its body heat as if it were a 15 Deg Air temp w/ no wind.....but your body temp still wouldn't drop below the air temp of the actual 33 Deg. Air Temp...you'd be dead....but you'd still only be at 33 Deg.

what kevin said... also.. wind tends to catch the open pockets of water and rip up the "caught" areas.. piling the ice on windward shores... the wind is NOT your friend when making ice...

That all being said...the projected forecast for Hubbardston before the tournament is looking good...I think we'll be all set.

Even if there is ice there today, I'm not sure it will make it through the next three days...Tuesday on is where I think we will really start to build. What I'm hoping is that when I head out there on Saturday 1/7, that I can see people fishing or a couple inches of good ice. That would mean that in the next week after that, we should get up to around 5 inches.

Yupo. I was on some ice today. I didn't fish, but someone had as it was all like a piece of swiss. Got a trip to Cabellas tommorrow, but I see ice fishing the first day of the year.

Thanks for the reports Mikey and Casey! I will take a trip out there next Saturday and see what I see. If there's ice across the pond, then I'll hope for good ice in the next week.

If not...then I'll be spending time at a motel in Gardner with five of my best buds for the weekend. I'll let everybody know next weekend..but I would share VB's opinion. I Guarantee!

We are a go from my end. Looked at the temps above freezing there in the next week, and there is only one day (Sat) where the net temp will be above freezing (I mean high minus low).

I spoke to the tackle shop today and the ice is not safe to fish. We will be moving the FoABBIT to Saturday, February 11th, 2012. Time and location will be the same. I will be calling the hotel to try to re-book my rooms on Monday (I need to speak to the manager).

Nope...Beach Plum Vodka...Bacon Bourbon. Had a snifter of the bacon bourbon last night. Good stuff. Too bad about Saltheart's rod building class...this was the only other weekend that we could swing.

I have never heard of such a thing. Usually you can cancel a week before with no charge. Make sure you drop an upper decker before you leave.

We got cut-rate rooms because we booked them so far in advance. I can see if this was done through Priceline, or one of those sights, but this was done right through Super 8.

The woman said, oh yeah, well that's corporate and this is our motel, so you need to pay the penalty to us...she eventually called Phil back and said that she misunderstood him, but he still paid the penalty for rebooking. $25 per night, per room, plus tax. I guess it's better than losing the whole $130 for the weekend, that she told me I would lose in the first place.

I may be able to do the 11th with the wrong side of the lake gang

I hear they were fishing out there last week. It didn't get too warm out there, even on the crazy nice day.

Last night it was down to 14, and it won't get abover freezing today.

I'll call the bait shop tomorrow and see what's what. The only iffy day between now and the tourney is Monday, which should only get to about 40 degrees.

30 degrees there right now...we should have fishable ice by next week. As I said, Monday is the only iffy day with lots of cold nights over the next 8 days.

I was out in WMass today. There's ice out there, but I'm guessing that we won't have all of Comet frozen.

Long Pond (where the FoABBIT usually lives) looked to be 100% iced over on the part we fish, so who knows. Lots of cold nights before now and then...I'd say we will have fishable, safe, ice.

Just got back , lot's of open water in the deep end :(

Every where else has 4 inches , the edges are trickey with open water spots

Bait shop said a 9lber was landed last weekend , A few trout and bass was all i seen today , Total maybe 12 fisherman ,

Halfway to Fabbit - Any ice reports there?

Around 2pm Sunday afternoon I stopped by on the way to Rutland. There were maybe 20 cars in the lot. Most of the people were set up off the point on the righthand side when you look out directly from the ramp. It looked okay on the edges.

Just talked to the bait shop across the street from the pond. She told me people have been fishing there all week.

So how did it go? Wish we could have made it.

Only a hand few of people made it. But we had a great time. ShawnO won again that basstardd! I'll post a few pics later. The fishing was reel slow. I say we switch it up next year somewhere with pike is the top prize. Thanks for all who showed up. It was nice seeing old faces and meeting some new ones too.

We fished over at the "other" town beach near the open water .
Thought the brothers would make it over ? We then headed over to the parking lot at 2pm and everyone was gone
fishing was SLOW
