View Full Version : Buddy building a new boat...
Mr. Sandman 11-21-2011, 06:44 AM A friend who currently has a sister-ship of mine (a 32' pilot house mirage) has pulled the trigger on a new boat. He loves what he has but wants a bigger boat for doing more extended offshore trips. I got a good look at the plans, it will be an amazing fishing machine when complete.
He is doing a custom boat sort of based on what he has now. Except, the hull is 38 calvin beal which was just released from the mold. It will be finished here in MA. The cool thing is it will have a walk around pilot house like the mirage. Since the beam is 15' on this thing, the pilothouse is 10' wide and will have all the creature comforts above and below decks. But it will also have a single 750hp diesel, generator and everything the offshore fisherman could dream for built ins. I can't wait to see it. I will try to find a link to some pics as it comes together. This is going to be one hell of a boat.
saltyric 11-21-2011, 06:50 AM Damn, looking forward to some pics!
Raider Ronnie 11-21-2011, 06:54 AM 38 Calvin Beal (Wayne Beal would be a great choice also) would be my choice if I were going to build a new boat !
Have a few friends with 36 Wayne beals with around 500 hp. 18-19 kt cruise 8-9 gph, tops out in mid 20 kts

Mr. Sandman 11-21-2011, 07:13 AM He texted me a couple photos the other day. It is still in Maine but when it gets down here I hope to visit it from time to time. If he chronicles the progress online I will get the link. If not when I see it will snap some photos/vids and post them.

Last winter he was talking that he was thinking of selling it when the new boat arrives...I had even sent over several potential buyer leads to him (mainly people that wanted to buy my boat or something just like it), but the last time I spoke to him (a couple weeks ago) he is now planning on keeping it and moving it to his other house in the keys. (he would then sell the boat he has down there now...a (29' everglades pilothouse with twin Honda's) and keep the Mirage. To say that his mirage is loaded would be an understatement...
BTW, if you really dig around you can find a used one that needs a bunch of TLC for a great price. There are not too many with the pilot house but most have the big walk thru CC with a tower and can be sheltered with isinglass. I have seen these go for as low as 22K and as high as 230K it all depends on condition/power/etc and how it is tricked out. Get a bare bones one and re-power it. They make a good project boat.
There was a nice Mirage with twin 300OB's for sale on THT site not too long ago. You can see it here: Bummer 34 Mirage has to go. - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum (http://www.thehulltruth.com/boats-sale-wanted/370536-bummer-34-mirage-has-go.html)_)
I think it sold for close to 60K or so but the really sad part is when the new owner was bringing her to her new home...this happened:

I bet you can pick this one up cheap from the insurance co.
I can tell you this is no easy boat to trailer. I have a triple axle trailer for mine as well and without a really good towing vehicle (like a duramax dualie set up) this is a white knuckle deal at high speeds. I would not take mine on the highway with a standard truck, you need a towing vehicle. I have pulled it out and made very short runs with it but ...I just can't imagine driving over the Bourne bridge with this...That is why I paid to have it shipped up from FL.
Mr. Sandman 03-09-2012, 07:23 PM Went to check on the progress today on the way to RI show today. Want a machine this is going to be. I think it could be the one of the great NE sport fishing boats. It has a looooong way to go but it is going to be a battleship. I will post a few cell phone photos tomorrow.
CapnBill 03-10-2012, 06:49 PM cant wait to see this machine...sounds like a dream...
Moses 03-11-2012, 12:37 PM We really need some pics please, regardless of what stage the build is at. Please....
Mr. Sandman 03-11-2012, 01:31 PM Sorry...I got distracted..pulled the cover back on mine and I am wrestling trying to get the raft down for inspection without killing myself or breaking anything and my wife is upset because I varnished (my new steps I made in the workshop) with the door open to the main house and the door open to the outside and now the entire house smells like Epifanes right now... (Personally, I kind of like the smell, a heck of lot better than the fiberglass smell in the boat barn yesterday)
It has a long way to go but I took a few pics, As it comes along I will add to this link.
