I don't have a fireplace but a friend of mine just bought a new house with a fireplace they intend to light periodically. It has no insert or stove , just a fireplace where they will burn wood.

They want to put a flat screen TV (like a 55 inch) on the wall above the mantel. What's peoples opinions on this?

The magnetic field of the electronics and other components and possibly the screen will draw the soot particles.
No experience of this situation just logic and science.

No worries,my parents have a 60" and it's roughly3.5-4' above the actual hole for the fire, they have fires all the time and it's been there for 5 years.

My opinion only, but I think it's a terrible idea design wise.

Although I would not personally do it....sounds like they will rarely have fires not every day and fireplaces don't put out that much heat above the opening (not like an insert or woodstove) so should be OK.

The family that bought our previous house in Newbury did exactly that. I stay in touch with them, it's going on 6 years and he has had no problems.

When's the last time there was a roaring fire in that room? Oh, never mind.....:rotf2:
