View Full Version : Java Joe No More
Think I'm getting old. I quit coffee a few weeks ago. All of a sudden, I started becoming more sensitive to caffeine - it made me very nervous.
Back in the day, I used to make this stuff called "fishing tonic" a thermos of sugared coffee with several No Doze tablets ground up in it when pulling all-nighters.
Now coffee brings on an anxiousness feeling that is not pleasant.
I guess it's fairly common.
JohnR 12-05-2011, 01:07 PM We're all getting old :smash:
Haven't ditched coffee yet but I may cut back more
The Dad Fisherman 12-05-2011, 01:19 PM I cut out the energy drinks for the same reason...all I do is Coffee now....just 1 cup a day though.
getting old sucks
PRBuzz 12-05-2011, 01:31 PM Couple cups black coffee in the morning and nothing with caffeine after noon!
It does suck. Stuff you can't do, things you can't eat. And then there's the realization that the rest of your life will most likely proceed along one or two trajectories, but probably just one - like end game in chess.
Raven 12-05-2011, 07:24 PM Coffee is a substitute for good nutrition
until it finally...... looses it's luster....
then you have to fall back on slow burning fuel foods
with sufficient protein or choose a Herb like Ginseng.
then coffee becomes just a favored beverage
instead of the main stay go to-> go drink.
That's true. I have a protein shake with milk and I feel good and can think straight. I don't miss coffee because the anxiousness was so unpleasant - it really turned me off to it.
I've read that in the late 50's and early 60's speed was a huge recreational drug and not just among young people. A lot of writers, established artists, housewives, even the president and his wife were on it. No thanks.
Raven 12-06-2011, 06:32 AM which i found out ... when i tried....
was how often you run into it....
where ever you go someone has some
or asking you if you want one
or your smelling it...being bombarded by tv commercials
seeing the lines as it begs you to join in...
a social thang.... making it quite difficult
The Dad Fisherman 12-06-2011, 07:31 AM But Coffee is Sooooooooooooo Goooooood

fishbones 12-06-2011, 11:25 AM Coffee is the best thing ever. I've been told that it makes you more manly and attractive to the opposite sex.
The Dad Fisherman 12-06-2011, 11:52 AM I've been told that it makes you more manly and attractive to the opposite sex.
I thought that was alcohol....:hee:
RIJIMMY 12-06-2011, 02:58 PM Coffee is the best thing ever. I've been told that it makes you more manly and attractive to the opposite sex.
No no, you're confusing that with donuts.
Raven 12-06-2011, 05:06 PM if your stealing a car
no one pays attention if there's a cup of coffee
in your hand....
I think that as you age it's important that you add new things to your life. Because as time moves along, there are going to be a significant number of subtractions and if you don't actively seek out additions, your life will feel increasingly empty of enjoyment.
I lost coffee this year, but I've picked up and increasing appreciation, knowledge and understanding of jazz. I'm not nearly an expert, but it has been a rewarding learning experience, and it's something that can be enjoyed frequently. I also started going to the library one night a week and just looking around - that has proved immensely enjoyable.
Raven 12-07-2011, 07:54 AM Tea is underrated for health improvement...
Green tea really gives you a Boost....
especially your immune system
where as coffee just makes your eye muscles twitch
(Well spoken Joe about subtractions /additions.)
The Dad Fisherman 12-07-2011, 08:22 AM I also started going to the library one night a week and just looking around - that has proved immensely enjoyable.
Yeah, but you gotta lose the Overcoat....and stop spending so much time in the Kids Section.....you're starting to creep people out :hihi:
Sea Dangles 12-07-2011, 11:33 AM Glad you are able to get out Joe,and it's nice the library is close enough that it doesn't set off your ankle bracelet.
Mr. Sandman 12-08-2011, 07:15 AM That's rough. Coffee would be a tough one for me to give up. I drink a lot of it pretty much all day. I drink less in the late afternoon and evening but occasionally I like a cup then as well. In the morning it is the first thing I go to. I would have a withdrawal headache by 11:00am if I did not have a cup.
I found this thread by doing a search on coffee. I was looking for a post about coffee makers on boats. Last year I put a small one-cup-at-a-time Keurig coffee maker on-board. Did not know if it would work out or not then as it would have to be run off of the inverter when away from the dock. It works great. I love that little machine. That has got to be the biggest poor-mans luxury item going on a boat. To make a cup of fresh brewed hot coffee in the middle of the day while fishing on a boat is fantastic.
My brother came out fishing with me one day this fall. It was cold and windy. Fishing was slow, we decided to move to another location. I asked him...you want a cup of coffee? He said sure! I take out the machine and in a couple minutes hand him a steaming hot cup of Paul Newman's extra Bold in an insulated cup...He looked at me and said."making coffee while underway???....That is awesome"
I took an introductory jazz course at CCRI that was very difficult. I never really had a grasp on it and ended up dropping the class. Still managed a degree in General Studies that has really served me well in life.
On a side note, the best experience CCRI ever afforded me the was the opportunity to work an "internship" under Joe's tutelage. Yes, Joe has been called many things; eccentric, witty, feminine, etc. But the one thing that one simply cannot comprehend is the level of intellect this man exhibits. Have you ever seen a cat eat a Gibb's needlefish? Classic example of market and advertising strategy. You just can't learn this stuff in a classroom. In all seriousness though, Joe is a very generous, insightful, intelligent person, and his writing reflects that. Cheers to you, Joe. Thanks for an easy A
Gee whiz, thanks Bart. Going to the vet's holding a thrashing cat with a 7" Gibbs Needlefish in its mouth, that was a tough one.
that would have made a good youtube vid...
Now back to original topic, the same thing happened to me with weed. I used to love weed, smoked it on a recreational basis through college and as I continued into the 'real world'... but by the time I was 25 it would make me all anxious & jittery to the point that I had to completely stop, not because I wanted to "quit" but because it wasn't enjoyable at all.
So weird how we change.
i love the library.

like i said, i'll pass on the weed, but replace it with a blowjob and you have the making of a perfect day...

least we agree on something
Clogston29 12-13-2011, 01:16 PM coffee is actually pretty damn good for you (unless you load it with a ton of sugar/sugar substitute/creamer/etc. or greatly overuse it or are overly sensitive to caffine). it has more antioxidants than tea, just hasn't been as aggressively marked toward that end, probably because its good enough that it doesn't have to be. it has been shown to significantly reduce risk of prostate and colan cancer, parkinsons and alzheimer's (all of which run in my family, except prostate cancer). no way i'd give it up.

You'd give it up if you felt like sh_t after drinking it. I liked it quite a bit before that.
Sea Dangles 12-13-2011, 02:14 PM Yeah,um sorry if I gave you the wrong impression on our cod trip zacs but I am currently spoken for.
Weed ,coffee, fishing....throw in a sunrise after an all nighter and you have me longing for summer.
Is it summer yet? :uhuh:
For a while there, back when the economy was good, I was getting coffee from
PORTO RICO IMPORTING CO. (http://www.portorico.com/store/) they are on Bleeker Street in NYC, have been in business for 100 years and supply the high end restaurants.
I was trying all different types and was making headway into becoming something of a coffee aficionado.
There's little more civilized and enjoyable (assuming you can handle it, that it is) than a cup of Hawaiian coffee made in a french press brewed with Poland Spring water, in the afternoon. It really hurt to let go of that. Superb, well-prepared coffee is like a beautiful woman: there's no substitute.
Raven 12-17-2011, 07:15 AM yes for "TASTE" that is quite true....
your at the stage where you need abundant energy and the coffee Buz
is too short lived....
interesting to read in the news ....of new discoveries that suggest that coffee
is good for health in certain ways... just the same.
