my 03 f250 is getting pretty beat and it's time. overall i've been pretty happy w/ the ford but the better mileage of the gmc and slightly smaller size is appealing. does anyone plow w/ a newer 3/4 or 1 ton gmc? are you happy with it. drove a new ford today, talk about sticker shock. thank god i don't want a diesel

and does anyone have an opinion on snow dogg plows

hey andy - any idea what the 2500 and 3500 get for mileage? are all the gmc 3500 duallies?

6.0 gas engine will get you average 12-15 depending how you drive. I believe you can get single rear wheel 1 ton...i'll say the 3/4 ton will be plenty for what you may need it for. The 2010 and up models have a new frame, suspension etc..they are a pulling machine.

I would never buy a diesel, the EPA killed the mileage they used to get, as for a big truck like that if your just plowing driveways get a 1/2 ton, I've been plowing since 94 and my current truck is a 1/2 ton chevy extended cab z71 with a boss 7.5 super trip edge on it, it plows just fine, never had a problem with it all, I'm thinking of making the switch back to a 3/4 ton, I drove a 96 F250 for 10 years, it rode worse than a bulldozer, but it plowed like a beast, 10mpg at best, I don't miss those days at all, if your not towing with it stay away from the diesel and it's 7k upgrade,

I have a 99 F250 diesel and it has 189,000 miles. I don't plow but I still get 19 miles per gal. I too am looking for a new truck, not because it has mechanical problems but the ford body is JUNK!! The bed is falling off and the doors are rotted at the bottom. It has holes the size of my head at the cab corners. So I have been searching for an 08 or newer 250/350 and can't believe the prices. I also looked into a lease and they want $855/mo for a 250 diesel and 643/mo to purchase. I am looking into other options. I have owened a Ford for 22 yeard and would likr to stay with one but they are not making it easy. The search is on.

I gotta put my .02 in here. I would stay far away from any of the new diesels that use exhaust fluid. DEF, cow piss, urea water whatever you want to call it, the systems are extremely complicated and troublesome. We have 2 '11 GMC 3500's at work there have ben a few recalls and the mileage is terrible. They average about 7.5-10 mpg at best. I cant say much good about the ford 6.0 they have ben far from reliable and haven't heard much about the 6.7 that would make me wanna run out and but one. My '83 Chevy K30 crewcab with a 454 does , average of 10-11ish. Don't get me wrong, the older diesels are great, but things started to go down hill when the emission standards went up. EGR and catalytic converters both build an engines biggest enemy, heat.

Interestingly enough, what I am seeing more and more of locally, amongst guys with the know-how, and garage space, that plow or tow...guys that would buy new every few years, beat them up, trade them off.. they are now buying heavy duty stuff.. 70's and 80's, beaters.. strip them down to the frame, clean up everything, buy new fenders, doors etc. ..have the differentials redone, driveshafts, get the trannys and transfer cases rebuilt and beefed, new springs all around, and then either buy a crate replacement motor, or get a new over the shelf motor at a dealer, and away they go after a re assemble and a fresh coat of paint... talked with a few guys I know that have done this, and they say they get a tougher, better truck, for less money, that will out work and out last the brand new stuff.. less electronics, more mechanicals..was wondering if this was just something I see local here, or if it is a trend elsewhere... cool seeing those one ton highboy Fords, and boxy style Chevy's...workhorses both, out and about again.

57 would make a nice hot rod.. these are more in the "worker" category.. one I know of, guy does beach tows, mostly motorhomes... think it is a 88 F350 dually 4X4... redid it frame up, front and rear posi, all hd springs, gutsy tranny and transfer case, fresh 460 with some aftermarket stuff... pulls anything.. before he had the wrecker body on it, some him do a full 6 wheel burnout with it :)... boys will be boys... another is a 78 one ton chevy with a 454 in it dana 60's front and rear.. set up just for plowing.. 9 foot blade.. it is a non stop tank.
