View Full Version : When do fish typically show up in the canal?
Surf Caster 12-22-2011, 08:51 AM One of my college buddies has a place not too far from the canal and I'm trying to plan a trip in late May to go visit. I was curious if the fish had usually showed up by memorial day weekend or if that's typically a little early for the canal.
It will be my first time there so I plan on fishing it regardless, but if I can try to be there at a time that's usually more consistent I will.
Thanks all

I was just looking for general guidance, as I'm going to fish regardless, but thanks.

Swimmer 12-22-2011, 02:40 PM There are no fish in the canal. Any word to the contrary is well
contrary.
tysdad115 12-22-2011, 02:57 PM About the same time I start being late for work every day, if you call and I'm not there yet that's a good indication.

You need to do what I do and go in to work late every day year round. That way, no one gets suspicious when fishing season rolls around. I also find that leaving really early a lot makes people think that I must have to go to some important offsite meeting. No one ever asks where I am anymore.
PaulS 12-22-2011, 03:44 PM Where ever I'm fishing, fish were there the day before and are planning on showing up the day after.
eelskimmer 12-22-2011, 04:35 PM Surfcaster,
The Truth.
You should join the parade to the canal 3rd week in May.

Back Beach 12-22-2011, 05:32 PM In recent years, the fish typically arrive in the canal just after I leave.

So what? It is not like you can catch them with 1/2 a rod.
stripermaineiac 12-22-2011, 08:20 PM There were fish there this mornin. Just watch the cameras.

Thanks eelskimmer. I appreciate that.
I was originally thinking it would be after fish showed up in Montauk (last yr i saw fish to 20lbs on May 20th) in MTK, but the more I think about it, Canal fish are likely on a different migration and different path than MTK fish alltogether.
Thanks again

Haha. I've heard there are no fish in Montauk either. :biglaugh:

That's been the case with me all my life!
JohnR 12-23-2011, 08:10 AM They are there as well as half of the eastern United States. Shoulder to shoulder, multi-bike pile ups, traffic jams on the service road, famine at Dunkin Donuts, Mosquitoes like Locusts. Its like the end of the world :uhuh:
zimmy 12-23-2011, 08:39 AM They show up for a 4 day stretch , about 5 days before I arrive. Then they are gone until I leave. I can let you know when I am going so you can plan to be there a few days before I arrive.
Just saw Paul's post. Didn't mean to copy :) It is true, though.

Ya and free parking at the herring run, don't forget that. It beats the $20 a day parking at some other spots.
stripermaineiac 12-23-2011, 09:05 AM There have been more than a few tag returns from the Thames winter fishery that were released in the canal. Some were good sized fish.

The fish did seem to be on a weekday 8 to 5 shift last year, revving up when I left for work and cooling off by the time I got out. Every weekend, the masses would descend and the bass would vacate.

Sounds like we are there at the same time.
BluesHarp 12-23-2011, 02:17 PM Which canal? Panama, Suez or Erie
As said before follow the water temps 50+ first migrating micros, 55+ and real fish arrive. That is after the bait, no bait few fish.
Of course I've never fished the canal so my entry is just another worthless post.
Buddy 12-25-2011, 08:18 AM Keep an eye out for the picket fences at the waters edge in mid may then be there yesterday
striprman 12-25-2011, 06:48 PM OK ?
Surf Caster 12-25-2011, 07:46 PM Yep. Thanks.
