There are a lot of Mac's and Sea Herring being caught. I heard about it and went down to check it out...it is surprisingly still going on. The wharf is a happening place.

A bridge in Newport had a steady pick last week from what I saw
During my teenage years in Newport we always had the mackerel/herring run that lasted into Christmas week and some seasons into the New Year. December was also the month to take silver hake (whiting) and pollock from the shore. This would be a good year to seek whiting again. Think dock/bridge with access to water 15-30 feet in depth - drop in some squid or mackerel strips on a bottom high low rig with size 2 hooks. Might extend your season with some fresh fish cakes. For pollock the hot spots were the Galilee channel and Newport shoreline casting 1/4 ounce kastmasters at dusk.

It is amazing what you can catch off that pier. I have seen a lot of herring being caught in my area for the last few weeks.

A few years ago they were running all the way up the Sakonnet. Very cool to see dolphin jumping in winter from your deck!
