View Full Version : CT Surfcasters- January 4th meeting- Bill Wetzel.
wader-dad 12-29-2011, 05:55 PM Our speaker for the January meeting is Bill Wetzel. Bill is a professional Montauk surf guide and has been doing it for 30 years. it is hard to believe how hard this guy works and the number of trips he puts in --and after all those years he still wants more. Great guy.
Bill does not usually come up our way.
He is going to do a talk on structure and reading the water - so its not just a go to Montauk speech which we have had before. I am sure he will throw in some Montauk structure and other stuff - he can't help himself.
Weather looks fine-
Meeting is at the Town of Madison Surf Club meeting room. Next Wednesday January 4th at 7pm. Don't have to pay, don't have to be a member, don't have to talk to anyone but you will recognize guys from Plug fest or the MS breakfasts or from fishing.
If you need directions or info send me a PM. Rob

wader-dad 12-29-2011, 07:36 PM Since there has been some interest, the directions are:
If you have a GPS the address is 87 Surf Club Road Madison CT.
This link to the CT Coastal Access Guide has written directions and a Map.
http://www.lisrc.uconn.edu/coastalaccess/site.asp?siteid=675
Its off exit 61 on 95. I would say its about 40 minutes from the RI border
If we had ChefChris and John show that would be a big attraction we would not need Wetzel :)
chefchris401 12-29-2011, 09:35 PM Just mapquested it on the iphone, 87 miles from providence, 1.5 hours travel time.
going to try and make it, anyone else from this area want to car pool, split gas?
tlapinski 12-30-2011, 07:30 AM CSA meetings are always a good time, can't wait to finally hear Bill speak. While there is no charge for attending the meeting, we do run raffles and there will be refreshments available for a minimal donation. I hope to see some of you there!
CT Surfcasters are a GREAT group. Friendly and knowlegable.

vineyardblues 01-03-2012, 04:14 PM Please ask him to do one at Mass Bass :)
Thanks in advance
wader-dad 01-03-2012, 05:11 PM Peter- you are not too far- come on down.
Somehow Bill says he is going to cover the following:
I’ll be talking on Reading Water. Water temps, wind, bait migrations, plugs, and how it all ties into rocky, sandy, bars, points, and back bay structure.
If he can cover that in an hour and a half, God bless him.
vineyardblues 01-03-2012, 05:54 PM I had plans on going. :)
2hrs down 2 hrs back is a long day
My side kick did an exit today and backed out
Have fun and pump up massbass :rotf2:
wader-dad 01-03-2012, 07:00 PM Well Basic Patrick is speaking in April- maybe you can make that one.
JohnR 01-04-2012, 08:12 AM Sadly, I'm not making it unless everyone wants to get very ill (and even then you would need to pick me up and return me :yak5: )

They are a great group & great club.
How many people typically show up? You'll probably have more for Wetzel, but I was just curious.
wader-dad 01-04-2012, 01:02 PM Jan-April we get the most- no surprise. Probably 45 to as many as 70 guys and a few gals. Probably once a year we hit 70. Maybe tonight.
In fishing months, still 30 or more.
We once had a famous guy named Joe Lyons speak about Block Island- I think it was a fishing month and we had around 45. Joe was quite a speaker back in the day.
Maybe I'll come up with some CSA Gear once I get all my colors made.
wader-dad 01-04-2012, 03:28 PM Joe that's a great idea to come some time- we would welcome that.
I will be modeling the zip Hoody tonight so your phone should be ringing tomorrow.

Rob -nice meeting you tonight. Thanks for the S-B invite. Counted 53 in attendance at one point.
Joe - Rob even plugged your hoody tonight.
Bill Wetzels talk was worth the trip.
Rob's alright. I wouldn't mind listening to Bill Wetzel. Surf Guiding, though it does not get much respect, is extremely instructive for both the guide and the client. First-hand exposure to someone who is just starting out and has enthusiasm to spare has a way of taking you back and re-invigorating you. It's infectious.
The thing I noticed most is that most people really can't cast for crap and have all heard that it is not that important. Dead wrong. You need to be able to cast far. I spent a lot of time on casting instruction, cast timing, and presentation.
