I think the US Navy's aegis weapon system would detect any incoming missle\object before it would have a chance to hit any one of the fleet.

I don't think Iran has that intention nor do any of renegade factions in the region

Not a chance. And after the Cole I'm sure the local captains won't hesitate to eliminate any threats that could harm their crew.

Mushroom cloud? No. They would only be screwing themselves with a one shot on so many levels. The first time they use a nuke their whole house of cards will come crashing down. Though I do not know if the Obama admin would respond in kind with nukes. No they wouldn't be so stupid to use a nuke. Not to mention it would be tactical use of a strategic tool. They have other potential tactical level tools to attempt to screw with the US Navy.

Lots of questions. While Aegis is great, especially in open waters, sea skimmers from close distance, combined with other simultaneous threats could sneak some in.

Hope so but Aegis only works when radiating, the Captain might be in the dumper and officer on deck might panic, and if they (Iran) were going to pull something don't you think they would try to create the conditions that would favor them?

Haven't they adapted bunker busters with a nuclear payload? Iran could say goodbye to every underground "research facility" within minutes.
