I have made several topwater plugs in the past on my lathe. My lathe is down right now, and I am going to try to build some crank baits and gliders. I have no experience with gliders and weighting them what so ever. I do have some plans, someone from Europe sent me years ago when there was a taklemaking.com forums. I figured I would start with the plans to at least give me a base line on the weighting. The problem is all the plans call for beech wood. I do not have any beech wood that I know of. Is there a wood that is similar enough to the properties of beech that would be a good starting point for these plans?

You can google wood densities and find something from the chart that is close.

Sugar maple would be a very close match as far as specific gravity and weight
