View Full Version : cod report
did a little codfishing on the IC III today. it was cold and windy but the bite was decent. first drop sucked - place was loaded w/ dogfish but we picked away at the cod. between the dogs and the giants fans on the boat it was looking like a long day in the making. captain made a move to a good spot w/o many dogs and we ground out a bunch of fish. after a few waves of fish we we moved onto the last drop w/ a slow pick of fish. a few of the days highlights were a 20# cod- the guy who caught it was not in the pool - always a mistake. fish4stripers gronk spike of a doggie - too funny, put those giants fans in thier place. there was a 4 y/o kid on board who hung tough and did not puke while many were. final tally for 4 of us was around 30 fish, i managed a limit but it was work. most of the fish were 22-25". only caught a half dozen shorts. fun day - worth going, should get a little better but w/ the warm water this may be it. if anyone wants some cod let me know
thefishingfreak 02-03-2012, 08:31 PM Sounds like it was worth the effort to me. Nice job

piemma 02-04-2012, 03:12 AM Nice job Niko. You have the freezer to store them
Mr. Sandman 02-04-2012, 09:00 AM Great to get a first hand report. Thanks for that Niko. I may cherry pick a nice weekday soon if the schedule stars align. (I am tired of buying cod at the fish market)
KB&J SIDEACTION 02-04-2012, 02:08 PM Was captain Greg at the wheel for your trip? He put us on a huge pile of fish last year. I was just talking to a couple of friends yesterday that it is about time to take the trip to Snug Harbor. Glad to hear they are doing good. Hopefully the Mate Randy Brown will be there again, He was a RIOT last year and really made the trip!
iamskippy 02-04-2012, 04:52 PM i remember this one time i went fishing with Capt. Paul and our depth finder broke on the way one. Wasted day right, yeah right, i had no arms or back left, i think that was the final straw for my back, not sure if it was the 18-20# hakes, the 10-12# Cusks, the cod and haddock where in the 5- 10# range, or that psycho pollack at the end, but i am a firm believer the capt makes the difference! Thank you Captain Paul where ever you are!
p.s never jig 300' of water with a tekota 600. takes forever to get the fish the boat.
fish4striper 02-04-2012, 05:41 PM good trip Paul, had a blast! Capt James put us on the fish just like last year.
iamskippy 02-04-2012, 06:31 PM any talks of a spring Cod trip for the site like last year?
i was thinking about codfest the other day but w/ last year being a complete disaster i'm a little gunshy. need to wait and see what the new regs are. if it's 3-5 fish, is it worth it. wont know if a good haddock year till the end of april, they're so hit or miss from year to year. we would have to fish stellwagen this time. should be pollock around at that time on the bank - 25 guys hooking up at once, gaffs flying, burlap bags soaked in blood, hernia coolers. good times :uhuh:
BigFish 02-04-2012, 10:37 PM Paul thanks for the cod! Had it for dinner and it was amazing!!! I owe you! ;)
:uhuh:
iamskippy 02-04-2012, 10:51 PM Paul, if you need a early show of hands im in, and we do it your way this year, no disrespect to anyone.

Rob Rockcrawler 02-05-2012, 09:24 AM I had a good time last year even though the fishing wasn't that great. Its tough to plan a off shore fishing event. Weather always plays such a huge role in it. I think that last year we had our hopes set pretty high with the years before of people hitting the 40-70 pounders in the same window of time. It wasn't what we hoped for but i don't think it was a disaster. Take out the bumpy seas and cold rain it was a decent trip.
the 50' boat is available for 12 people for $1500 if you guys want to go now. available for next sunday i hear.

Who's 50' boat? I'm in
island current has a 50' boat that they charter out for 12 people/$1500 bucks and you can add extra people for $100 per person
iamskippy 02-05-2012, 10:33 AM Rob i agree, i had a steady bite all day and made some new friends, i just dont like it when one of the mates standing on top of the doc with me says arnt you guys a little over geared for this, there are only a few small fish around. Kinda went up me sideways.

Man that sounds good:drool:
Mr. Sandman 02-07-2012, 08:18 AM You not kidding...that does sound good. You should post the recipe.
polish ravioli - fried version. roll out the dough and stamp out 4 inch circles. mince up some onions and saute them in butter, dry mustard, s/p. lightly poach the cod in beer or water, pat the fish dry w/ paper towels and build the pierogies. fry them quick and hot. for the sauce just mix up some grey pupon, little sour cream, red hot, and dry chinese mustard. for the saute version - same pierogi w/ a white sauce - fry up some onions and put aside. make up a rue w/ flour and butter add salt and lots of fresh ground pepper and adobo spice. add chicken stock, milk, sour cream, onion slices, and reduce for a few minutes. pull from heat and add parmasan cheese. good to go. next time i'm going to add pancetta or thick cut bacon to the sauce
