A buddy of mine gave me a bunch of redwood that I tried turning a few plugs with today. Very nice to turn but I noticed that after sanding the grain lines are raised. Is this common of redwood?

Slipknot 02-18-2012, 10:14 PM yes it is redwood has a very hard grainline so the inbetween soft wood part sands easily. it makes great signs when you cut out letters and sandblast it. I would suggest you turn the wood with a sharp chisel as smooth as you can, then only lightly sand it. a duplicator would be difficult johnny ducketts 02-19-2012, 09:24 AM I have duped it to make a spook and a pencil, cuts nice but like slip says takes a light touch, really dusty when sanding and make sure you are wearing a respirator as the dust is bad news.
