OK--Weird question. I have a top loading clothes washing machine which is probably about 4 years old, Maytag. It has been working well, but I noticed an acrid smell yesterday. Burning? Maybe. Anyway, it works and sounds fine. I unplugged it and the smell went away.

I ran it again under supervision and I noticed the smell during the spin cycle. Bearing??

Anybody have any ideas? It's kinda important since I have 2 teenage daughters who seem to have many costume changes throughout the day.

I appreciate your thoughts

Step 1 is take it apart and pinpoint the problem. Could be something stuck like a wad of hair

Now if you looked like Niko, TattoBob or I you wouldn't have to worry about a wad of hair!:rotf2:

I went through a similar problem with mine last weekend.I have a front loader and five minutes into the wash it sounded out of ballance but when you open the door smoke would poor out.
Anyways 100 screws wires and hour and a half later I was able to pull the drum out,on the back of the drum there are three spokes made of aluminium with the shaft on center, well one of the spokes roted and broke.
Well I looked on line and found the part, the cheapest I found was $545!Yeah ok!I found a brand new unit same model for $538.No brainer it should be here Monday.

I had a belt that disintegrated and caused that smell. I would have paid someone to replace it if I knew what I was getting into.
