Never too early to start thinking and planning the next trip in Sept 2012. Similar weekend to '11 would be 8th/9th, weekend right after Labor Day). Last time was a 2 day trip, leave Hyannis 7AM Sat and return 5PM Sunday. The official HelenH schedule for the 2012 is not yet posted.

Cape Cod Fishing Boat | Deep Sea Fishing | Cod Fishing MA (http://www.helen-h.com/helenh.htm)

Here's a summary of last year's trip (you might even see a few SB'ers):

Fabulous 2 Day Tuna Trip | Helen H Fleet (http://www.helen-h.com/wp/?p=345)

Someone to be unnamed suggested a 3 day trip this year? Should we make this a "sticky"?

JusT waiting for them to put there schedule up to pick a date. I'm going to book early so I can get a bunk up top. They do limited trips kev but even the regular trips arnt packed. I think last year we had 24 people. At night there were only 10 guys fishing at any time. I'm gonna bring an 80 and get that big tiger shark

I lost a probable sword last time I was out, so I'd be plenty happy taking a few yellows on troll/jig and dropping squids for swords all night :). I think two nights would be best, at least for me- just imo.

The way they worked it last year: 3 yellowfin/day/man was the quota. Don't forget mahi, albacore and wahoo.

For me it might take 3 days to get 3 yellows!

Niko do you mean one night (2 day) or two nights (3 day)? Seems like there's more interest in a trip that has 2 nights. I'm with skip- depends on cost- but if I'm forking over $400, I'd rather throw an extra $50 down for another full day of outfishing everyone on the boat :rotf2:

Seriously considering this. Never been on any kind of tuna trip before. Not set up with gear very well for this type of fishing. Have a Newell 447 that I use for bottom fishing, and one of my striper reels is a Stella 10000SW. The Newell is on an 8' "custom" Ugly Stick which works well for cod/haddock/pollock but is probably too light for yellowfin. If I grabbed a standup rod for the Stella somewhere do you think I'd get by? Did you see any similar setups on the last trip? Or would you just rent a Shimano setup from them?

Thanks.

No white rods allowed.... lol if you are not sure then rent your first year, its cheap enough and there is no shame in it.

Matt,

I go on these trips at least once a year (usually three trips a year between the Helen H and the Frances Fleet).

I'm not sure if the Newell would stand up to a decent sized yellowfin. There are also a few swordfish caught on these trips...

If I'm on the trip you're more than welcome to use some of my gear (I tend to bring everything I own, WAY more than I need).

Generally I think someone going on this trip should bring:

1 30 lb outfit for chunking
1 15-20 lb spinning outfit for casting to mahi and catching bait
1 jigging outfit

I'm sure there are many other options but that's where I started.

Hope to see you there.

Charlie

hey matt - your stella 10000 will work for most fish out there. i was using a calcutta 700 for jigging on a light duty cod rod, at one point i was napping and heard a fish come over the rail - i jumped up and hooked 8 fish on jigs in a row. lost half of them. alot of these fish are in the 25-65 pound range. if you hook a bigger one well at least you'll have a good story. and get some metered braid for jigging

Quick question for anyone who jigs for these fish at all with spinning gear. Would you rather have a 5'6" 520gm or a 6'6" 325gm rod? Some things I've read seem to think the extra length is beneficial fishing on a party boat sized vessel to easier clear the rails? Are shorter (6' and less) jigging rods the norm on these trips?

niko
04-09-2012, 04:46 PM
the longer rod for the partyboat. vs makes a pretty good 325g one for an ok price. will double as a good bluefin jigging/casting rod if you put a bigger reel on it

What size jigs were you hooking up on last year Paul? Trebles, single assist or double assist hooks? Also I think you dropped to like 50# or 30# flouro right? Anyone know what size hooks we used for chunking last year I can't seem to remember. Been stocking up on supplies etc so I'm just picking up a few things here and there instead of rushing out trying to stock up all at once.

4-6 oz hammered diamond jigs, find one with a nice flutter. Single hook on the bottom. Started with 40# flouro then went to 60#

I picked up a few of the 4oz Bomber butterfly style jigs at a recent sale. They have dual assist hooks but they look like garbage and I wouldn't trust them. I'll replace those with a single 5/0 Owner or similar.

I'll pick up some diamonds as well.

Thanks.
