I am thinking of making an eye splice with one of these:

But wonder if I can get splice together with this thimble...I worry things might get jammed up in the closed section while trying to make it.

What do you think?

Why would you want to? Why not just splice a sacrificial cover? That way you can see chafe.

Yeah... I just came across it while shopping and thought it would be more rugged ...it may be more trouble that it is worth. I'll go with the standard thimble.

Likwid...have you ever used any of those snap schakles made by that outfit in Mystic...? Tylaska ?, I am slowly making a towing bridle and thinking of using one of these. They look great but it is not something I have ever used. You big time sailors may have used them though. Have you ever used one?

Tylaskas are awesome, keep a big screwdriver around incase you need to break it under load.

Wichards are also very very nice.

I just use a 15-20 foot standard rope, either braid or standard triple twisted for a bridle. I run it between the stern cleats and use the tow's anchor rode, with the anchor removed and lust put the eye into the bridle, easy to release under load by undoing the bitter end on one of the cleats.

She's broken 3 normal dog leash shackles (belgian malinois), had a couple kicking around from racing and work so figured, hell why not? 8,000lb working load spectra lead with appropriate shackles. :D

macojoe: 3 strand is super easy to splice, look online, plenty of guides.
double braid you need the fids to do right.

Yeah it is pretty easy, and I get a feeling of satisfaction when it comes out perfect...my mom actually taught me when I was a kid. She made all kinds of cool splices. I do mostly basic stuff.

I have a slip and an mooring. Moorings are great but...you only have one line to the mooring and you are probably not going out to board your boat in a hurricane to check the line so that line or two you have on there has to be ball buster good. I would just buy one of those yellow jacketed well made mooring pendants like :

It is always nice to have some custom lines but you need to be able to sleep well when you hear the wind howling this summer. So I would just buy what you need for now.

practice your splicing in the off season. You should buy a fid kit that has both styles of fid (for braid and Swedish for stranded, you can do make some splices in three strand lines without fids but they are cheap and the job goes a lot easier. You can even make your own fid) Also if you have big thick fingers with no nails you really need a fid.

I will be getting a couple of the pendant ropes you posted (Thank Sandman) cause my 20+ years of diabetes has killed my hands! I no longer tie my own rigs any longer let alone try splicing.
