fish4striper 03-13-2012, 07:45 AM Guy said I should use this, works good, easy cleanup: thoughts? On sale at defender $120, West Marine should price match.

If I go with this, what should I get for barrier coat? Boat's never been painted.

isn't your boat on a trailer? why bottom paint it?
if your looking for best efficiency do a Carolina coat, that's something like VC offshore{sailboat race paint} or similar on the planing surface and ablative on the sides and transom where the sun is going to hit it. The sun is what causes most of the growth
fish4striper 03-16-2012, 03:51 PM I got a slip in ri for this season 1st time boat will be painted. Planning on barrier coat first then ablative

thefishingfreak 03-16-2012, 06:29 PM Never tried it but probably will be fine. I get two gallons and give a nice thick coat on the bottom. Whatever's left I just keep porkin it on the waterline. That's where it will wear off from line, scrubbing etc.. I use the cheap crap from Hamilton and just walk around the dock with a scrub brush a couple times a month to get any growth off.
The planing surface stays clean it's where the sun hits that will grow a beard. I don't fuss about it too much it usually isn't sitting still for long enough to get a lot of growth.

MakoMike 03-17-2012, 10:30 AM I've been using a paint that is 60% Couperous oxide the last few years. Its an ablatibe that works very well. You can probably google it and find it. If not let me know and I'll find the brand name for you. It's no more expensive than the others and works more better. :)
thefishingfreak 03-17-2012, 07:54 PM FYI I was at Hamilton today and there's a $10.00 mail in rebate on all the petit stuff. Your hydrocoat was there also

sokinwet 03-18-2012, 07:37 AM Have used Hydrocoat with good results; easy application and cleanup w/ the water base is great especially if you have to crawl under the boat to paint and end up painting yourself too. Switched to Marpac (?) last year; not water based but available @ Monahans for $69.
fishonnelsons 03-22-2012, 05:57 AM The Hydrocoat is good. Just ran across Bluewater though - google it - big commercial type of paint company for maritime - alot of commercial guys on the Cape use it - AF45 is one of them - Cape Fishermans Supply is starting to carry it - around $100.
On the barrier coat, check out SeaHawk Barrier Coats - I am getting my bottom soda blasted after 12 years and the folks use this barrier coat exclusively.
fish4striper 03-22-2012, 07:27 AM Thanks guys, the more I think about it, I should go with a multi year paint. I can see painting every year if you put your boat on stands. Being on a trailer and not having boat stands readily available probably best to do a multi year where i could get 2-3 yrs before putting it back on stands.
you are more than welcome to borrow my stands whenever you want as long as I am not using them, which is only a few days every other year....:)
fish4striper 03-22-2012, 12:29 PM thanks Zac! Niko offered to bring some down. Let's see what works out when we go to paint.
likwid 03-22-2012, 04:56 PM I actually have a gallon of Interlux Bottomkote NT (blue) that I have no intentions of using that I'd sell reasonably cheap if you're interested.
fish4striper 03-23-2012, 09:02 AM Thanks for the offer, looking to go green to match my trimming and ttop
