View Full Version : Planting Times
The Dad Fisherman 03-15-2012, 02:44 PM Looking for when you coinsider optimum times to plant certain vegetables.....Peas are going in Next Weekend per Raven's Suggestion....
Interested in when to plant me Spinach and Lettuce...
any Suggestions? Maybe some tips for how to plant/fertilize for success....
Swimmer 03-15-2012, 08:32 PM 4/15 is usually when the peas hit the dirt. Cover everything over every night thereafter. I have actually heated my pumpkin plants, which I haven't started yet. Buy some Coast of Maine compost if you don't have any ready to mix in with the loam. I have been adding those bails of woods chip/sawdust that you get from Agway every year to create more ariation (sic) IN EVERY RAISE BED. jUST ASK MY BUDDY DOWN the street about when it will be dry enough to be able to back up to the cow manure pile, two weeks.
spence 03-15-2012, 08:37 PM I'd put them all in right now.

Raven 03-16-2012, 05:45 AM do not use any "horse" manure because you will
overwhelm your garden spot with undigested weed
seeds and eventually loose the battle.
now with lettuce ....you'll need to have several
spots because you don't want it all becoming ready at once
i use a vitamin B-1 solution like super thrive
(makes roots grow 100 times faster)
and
some maxi-crop for the seaweed's minerals
this gives them extra vigor and resistance to bugs
it's not like you can preserve it
...so think succession planting
the critical thing is spacing so that you create
a micro climate where the outside leaves just touch
shading out the spaces for weeds to grow.
Lettuce loves to be transplanted
but when 4 inches tall
do both: direct seeding and a flat
to fill in empty spots
vineyardblues 03-22-2012, 02:24 PM Asparagus is up in my Back yard :)
The Dad Fisherman 03-22-2012, 02:30 PM Peas going in this weekend.....
Going to turn all the dirt in the garden this weekend and get things ready.
Lettuce and spinach going in next weekend
BigBo 03-22-2012, 04:09 PM do not use any "horse" manure because you will

seeds and eventually loose the battle.
I have a friend with horses. We've been using the horse manure for years in my wife's garden. She loves using the stuff. She has always had a very successful garden.
Raven 03-22-2012, 06:12 PM i have used it in the past and its a crap shoot
depending on where it comes from
it was reportedly 8 years old but sometimes it's been disturbed
or it's in proximity to a field where wind has blown many seeds into it.
this year i have switched to a different type
typically when you fertilize your fertilizer only reaches about 10%
of the plants roots but when you foliar feed by spraying the leaves with a water soluble fertilizer you get 90% utilization.
~
if you know of a large willow tree you can cut a bunch (50) of 24 inch long branch ends and place them in a bucket of water for a week.
this liquid can be reused as a type of fertilizer because the cuttings release a root stimulant that will increase root growth 100%.
vineyardblues 03-27-2012, 07:05 AM Taken last night 3/26/12
A ton just crowning out of the earth , hope the cold does not harm them
Raven 03-27-2012, 07:11 AM usually just slows em down a bit... as soil's a good insulator
i am building a hot bed because it's at my highest elevation
for early planting ...and then down back where the snow is
the "last to melt" or the coolest spot that is designated for
last planting of the "cold lovers" in may and or June.
I plant every month regardless. Succession ! is the way!
The Dad Fisherman 03-27-2012, 07:19 AM I put up my Pea Trellises and planted the peas this past weekend.....Gotta go by today and see if the wind took them out from last night.
Raven 03-27-2012, 08:22 AM ya Got to do this TDF ,/|=======|\,
because they get heavy and become a sail
fairly Quick. see-> Johnnyseeds.com has Sugar ANN
earliest -52 days and doesn't need support
their stuff is from Maine so it does real well down here.
The Dad Fisherman 03-27-2012, 08:43 AM I made mine with a center pole ringed by Stakes in the ground with Sisal Twine running from Stakes in the ground to the top center of the pole pole....like Teepees
I may shore them up with some rocks on the center pole for some added support.
I got the concept off the internet.....of course :hihi:
1 Pole, 6 Stakes w/ Twine and 6 Seeds per Stake for a total of 36 per Trellis.....did 6 Trellises....hoping to stock the Freezer w/ some
Raven 03-27-2012, 10:08 AM that sounds good and strong!
Since your a beer drinker (and brewer) you should try these!
because they Taste Just awesome with Beer and each one
comes in it's own individual paper husk
Known as a Strawberry tomato or Husk Tomato
they are sweet and pepper tasting and like salsa
the perfect addition...
see them here
Goldie (OG) - Johnny's Selected Seeds (http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-5883-goldie-og.aspx)
Raven 03-30-2012, 05:26 PM 4 feet wide by 30 feet long (give or take) for 120 square feet of salad growing ect. And no friggan wood chuck
is going to escape detection not to mention deer that are plentiful out back as well. I can't believe that it's taking
almost four yards of loam/compost mix to fill the thing.
I have a $hit load of pelletized carrot seed which makes for PERFECT spacing because carrot seec
is real fine like grass seed.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/raisedbed.jpg
Raven 03-30-2012, 05:28 PM well i have three more wheel barrows to get dumped in thar
ahhh! finished and ready to plant after a brief snow storm in the A.M.
i like having some green stuff with my Fillet's ya know and not at store prices!
In reality we really only needed a 4x8 but being Scottish i always Over compensate.

WESTPORTMAFIA 03-30-2012, 08:20 PM Supposed to snow tonight. I'd say next weekend would be good to plant some weed in the neighbors yard

Raven 04-11-2012, 07:19 AM Broccoli plants are sprouting despite the 30 degree mornings
we've had since 3/31 when planted......they love COLD....
The Dad Fisherman 04-11-2012, 08:04 AM I'm still waiting for my Peas to make an appearance......
Raven 04-11-2012, 09:21 AM i pre soaked mine as always but the variety was smaller (smaller pea seeds)
and they're a non climbing bush variety that's extra early. I only pre-soaked them for around 5 hours
and they had swelled enough that i figured the germination process had begun but normally
i get everything ready and pre-soak overnight a full 8 hours.
I am still waiting too for the (main) peas to pop... i have some in an experimental bed
that was planted during that first hot week that sprouted but not that many.
just hasn't been wet enough ...but its coming
Raven 04-15-2012, 09:10 AM Peas...be poppin... 53 days til loaded :btu:
bone mealed the broccoli ..........gots too many !
bought tomatoes and peppers (plants)
and some Rosemary herb
to keep the white cabbage butterflies away
Raven 04-18-2012, 11:48 AM carrots are up.....
buying them as pelletized seeds definitely paid off on germination.
Raven 04-18-2012, 11:49 AM Taken last night 3/26/12
A ton just crowning out of the earth , hope the cold does not harm them
try eating them Raw Peter...careful tho...as it's addicting
The Dad Fisherman 04-18-2012, 12:12 PM I finally got some peas popping through....
this weekend I'm planting the Lettuce, Spinach, and a few herbs in the garden
Raven 04-18-2012, 01:12 PM might rain kinda hard (this weekend) i hope
,,,,,so your best bet is to plant in mini v trenches
that way a hard rain won't wash them around as much
Swimmer 04-18-2012, 05:18 PM Will be planting potatoes in the morning. Peas and lettuce maybe as well, which is the wife's venue.
I have nine pumpkin seeds growing in pots. Seeds come from huge pumpkins. Smallest seed comes from a 985 # Berard, and the biggest from a 1600 + # Jutras. Going to give it hell this year.
Squaring away by adding height to a couple of raised beds. Brought in 18 wheel barrow loads of loam from the pile today. Mixing in Haywood Moo Poop as I go. New compost isn't ready yet.
Swimmer 04-23-2012, 11:09 AM Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
Actually because of this heavey rain coming and which has arrived Iheld off on planting. Didn't want anything to rot. Probably thursday.
Have to get my pumpkin holes ready for the 1st at the latest.
Raven 04-23-2012, 01:08 PM planted early corn, potatoes
lettuce, strawberry tomatoes then betterboy and Big Boy
sage flowers all kinds of stuff in flats....
justplugit 04-23-2012, 07:30 PM bone mealed the broccoli ..........gots too many !
Rav,if you don't already do it, a ring of cottonseed meal
around the lettuce as it begins to head up will give you
the best ever.
Raven 04-23-2012, 07:47 PM Never heard of that Dave,
hmmm
i have 8 bins full of worms and casting's
to make a high grade tea for insane fertilization
and you can filter it down so that its foliar fed too
which delivers 90% utilization compared to adding soil
amendments....@ 10% - should be interesting.
Raven 04-26-2012, 06:49 AM FROST WARNING Tomorrow !
Swimmer 04-26-2012, 08:09 AM FROST WARNING Tomorrow !
Last frost in west and north of Been Town is usually May 9th Craig. Keep cover handy if you've planted.
Raven 04-26-2012, 08:39 AM yep or latest the 15th frank...
winters goodbye
goin plant shoppin
Raven 05-09-2012, 08:23 AM Keep cover handy if you've planted.
have a new method Swimmer for tomatoes planted in Giant pots
30 gallon i guess... where i have a huge black trash bag already under it
so when frost is coming i just cover the plants with a 5 gal bucket and pull up the trash bag
and loosely tie it off for the night.
worked like a charm....
Raven 05-09-2012, 08:28 AM http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/newgarden.jpg
and now for phase two...4 more yards.
this will keep me busy for awhile
good exercise too!--> just took delivery

The Dad Fisherman 05-09-2012, 08:35 AM My Garden is looking all Sad..:bc:
Although the Spinach is popping through with the help of all this rain....
Raven 05-09-2012, 09:42 AM my soil pile is half compost and half loam screened and blended together
4 yards cost $156.75 (yikes) but the results are encouraging. i never let it dry out and the weathermen
are saying this rain is sticking around for weeks ..... so
Just replant ....do some flats at home for extra transplants.
Raven 05-18-2012, 05:44 AM today and tomorrow moon in Taurus the EARTH SIGN
good for planting and repairing things (repairs will last)
but as a bonus this "time selection" is followed by 4 days of rain
next week ensuring good germination for grass seed or edible plants
Rockfish9 05-18-2012, 08:25 AM last thing i need now is a week of rain.. my tomatoes are blossoming and rain will ruin the pollenation of those plants..I've had plants in the ground for over 3 weeks now...
Raven 05-18-2012, 08:38 AM i just purchased a Russian variety that appears to grow
unbelievably huge tomato's with streaks of a dark color
on them like swirls or stripes....interesting but the vigor
and SIZE of the flowers are giant compared to say big boy
or better boy (the standards) as in twice the size of those.
Raven 05-18-2012, 08:44 AM The wife boogied to Florida and left me a surprise on the cellar steps
a small basket because she stole a parts box to pack something and transferred the contents to a small round basket....unknown to me!
well i stepped on the edge of it and nearly went head over into a roll down the stairs but luckily had a firm grip on the railing. Still i rolled my left ankle
semi spraining it... so now i'm moving yards of loam and compost 50/50 mix with two sprained ankles... sitting here for a moment to put on a spandex brace
on what was.... my good ankle  tons of transplanting to do. yep
~
I don't think you'll get blossom rot joe and they say epsom salts gives them a quick magnesium fix that prevents blossom drop.... look it up on utube

Where did you buy this ?
And correct me if I am wrong but , just getting loam and a bunch of buvung (sp) 4.99 20lb bags cheaper and some 10-10-10 as I did way cheaper :)

purchased at Zecco brothers in Northboro on rt 20 right beside that place with the gigantic rooster .
A 3 yard minimum for deliveries but they have compost that is screened and mixed with the loam for the mix.
508 393 8240.. i got 4 yards.... which filled that bed in the picture
that's ...............4' feet wide 30' feet long by ten inches deep...
~
so figure out how many of those bags stacked to reach a ten inch height
and measure the bags for length and width and then do the math
Peter.

Raven 05-24-2012, 12:26 PM I have them Galore.....

is when i see these
in a week i'll be eating peas
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/FLOWERS.png
The Dad Fisherman 05-25-2012, 09:19 PM I had to replant mine....but they are sprouting nicely, so very soon.
I have been getting some lettuce this week. Tomorrow the Summer Squash, Zuchini and Butternut squash get planted
Raven 05-26-2012, 10:36 AM i have 25 3 gallons planted with butternut waitin to pop
same number of 3 gallons in green leaf lettuce and extra broccoli
the zuke's are growing super fast.. prolly have one in weeks
they are also in pots but 5 gallon and bigger eventually i'll elevate them
to eye height... for easy harvestin... planting 50 red bell peppers today
and too much more to list and building the second big bed which is
gonna get spiked with my small worm bins then i'll dump wheel barrows
of the soil/compost on top of them and start them new again but i'll be switchin
over to georgia JUMPERS which dance like they're getting shocked with a tazer lol
man is it Hot and MUGGY have to take ALLOT of refreshment breaks

Rockfish9 05-31-2012, 07:20 AM Everything is going great... .. the new asparagas bed is sprouting.... now the battle with the chipmonks in the strawberry patch has resumed!
Raven 05-31-2012, 08:03 AM MY corn is finally sprouting ....
the back Garden went completely wild -oh well lousy with deer anyways
so i won't plant it til much much later...fall gardens do better.
i have 20 or so Hubbard or butternut squash sprouting in POTS
Luckilly i am doing both pots and beds because the SLUGS are kickin my A$$
so i go around sprinkling table salt on them turning them to orange Goo
works very well because you cannot handle them...worse than eels
i found a hard shelled one the other day which i had never seen before
i have a new chore....picking Peas...while the ANN peas produced real fast
i'm not that impressed with the bush variety thus far... and i think
they need a sorta Minnie tomato cage http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/huh2.gif

Even though I use tomato cages for tomatoes.. they are better suited for eggplants and peas.. I've used them for cukes before as well...
Raven 05-31-2012, 09:36 AM so in the new bed.... (2nd bed)
the one that has 6 worm bins of worms and castings dumped into it
will have a solid fence built First along the south side then i'll plant the climbing sugar snap peas which i'll bag and vacume seal
and they will grow like Gang Busters...i'm sure.:uhuh:
The Dad Fisherman 05-31-2012, 02:26 PM Cabbage is looking good...already been getting lettuce for the table. Put in the Tomatos, Squash, and peppers yesterday...
PaulS 05-31-2012, 03:01 PM I hate coming here and seeing pictures of Raven's garden. Makes me jealous.

You and me both......
Raven 05-31-2012, 10:54 PM ran off a big RACOON...getting bird seed
i'm making sure the mice are not digging up my corn plants
as seen below as little tiny green spikes
the starchy kernel changes from dry starch to very sweet
as it germinates so it is a prized food for F-ing rodents
you have to make your presence known during this stage
or risk loosing them all because they dig them all up-bastids
oh yeah: you can save money by cutting up an old venecion (sp) blind for plant tags

Rockfish9 07-11-2012, 09:50 AM this years garden is the best it has been in 10 years... although I have "suckered" and even pruned branches.. they look like an overgrown forrest( mainly due to my lack of dilliegance when on a fishing binge).. but they are loaded with fruit...the big boy's in the picture get any taller and I'l have to stake them from the dog wood!...you'd never know i gave 30" between plants...a mixture of organic and chemical fertilizer seems to be what they wanted..
Raven 07-11-2012, 10:43 AM i've got some of them Plumb jobs too
a tomato paste tomato
ate my first cherry tomato yesterday, always on JULY 10th

been spraying for cucumber beetles with safer insecticidal soap
Rockfish9 07-11-2012, 11:05 AM yup.. mostly plums.. I make about 5 gallons of sauce a year( last year being an exception).... i grow a few big boys for the table...I dont have alot of room but make the best of what I have..
vineyardblues 07-11-2012, 01:31 PM That's all we do is the plums, and they are doing great , all green but the plants are huge...
As for the rest of the gaden , one tiny cuke , I would guess in two weeks I will have hundreds ... , been picking the seat peas for a week , a long wait for them , not sure the heat likes them to much
have to pick the couliflower tonight or before this weekend . I will post a pic
Peppers are just OK , squash is not so good this year but I did move them all to a new location and maybe better luck next year...
sweet potatoes ae looking good , as they did last year and I received crap in the fall. I changed brands as a local farmer told me I had planted the wrong ones for NE :)
The pole beans are 10 ft high
My reg potatoes are flowering as we speak
I planted spaghetti squash and they are wild , I had no idea they would run like a pumkin , and run and run
I have been watering every day and tossing in some 10-10 -10 2 times so far
And I can't wait to go fishing with Joe in the fall
The Dad Fisherman 07-11-2012, 02:52 PM Peas Good, Cabbage Good, Tomato Plants are taking off...
Zuchini and Summer Squash suck this year...same with da Cukes
Raven 07-12-2012, 06:18 AM zuchini's are flourishing ....and these all grown in big pots
but speaking of Fall....the fall garden out produces the spring garden 2-1
in my opinion, as it's getting progressively colder NOT warmer
and the cole crops love that....nothing wants to BOLT
the time to plant seeds IS right now
The Dad Fisherman 07-12-2012, 06:31 AM I'm putting in a couple of different beans in this week...want to also freeze some for the winter.

I have some space , what u talking about for the fall ?
Peter
Raven 07-12-2012, 10:10 AM I have some space , what u talking about for the fall ?
Peter
definitively Broccoli , lettuce red sails is just awesome
Kale for soups and stews is unbeatable(another cole crop)
sugar snap peas, they go with everything,
celery , onions (scallions)
carrots, beets... all depending on what you like of course.
the germination rate for broccoli seed is nearly 100%
so don't sprinkle the seeds thinking -> OH i'll thin later.
Bad idea.... broccoli loves to be 12 inches apart and if
you transplant it ....they don't grow as big.
if they have neighboring plants touching them they head for the sky.
Better to deep water overnight with the hose trickling
then regular water on top of that....after they sprout
anytime its going to rain...water the crap out of the garden so the rainwater
can penetrate and not stay in the top 3 inches of soil because it gathers nitrogen out of the air as it falls.
for broccoli: Better to drop one seed into the palm of your hand
and carefully put it in place. I like to use a light topping
of vermiculite "coarse" on top to keep the soil from drying out.
the growers supply shop next to (home depot) actually in between HD and the 140 turn-off...
in Shrewsbury has it for a great price....much cheaper than those worms way thieves.
you can also experiment with pre-soaking and or pre-germinating seeds
until you see them double in size or noticeably swell
even a dozen at a time. 2-4 hours
Especially with sugar snap peas
i'd soak them over night then place them in a big zip log freezer bag
slightly open so they breath...(in the dark)and you exhale into the bag hole
to give them some c02 (on occasion)
....doesn't hurt to give them some B1 to stimulate the
root growth by a factor of 100 times normal. usually its
like 5 drops per gallon of water so the liguid will last a whole season
because yes...it's pricey but man does it work!
Raven 07-12-2012, 10:19 AM the reason my plants look healthy is because i take worm castings out of my bins
and add it to the plants on occasion to both fertilize my plants -intoduce worms
worm eggs and "bed run" the white worms extra small and the mini reds as they adapt better than tossing breeder size in there as they will wander...
then i replace the castings i took out with more loam /compost mix so they have fresh bedding. i have to order another 50 lb bag of purina worm chow again!$20.00 bucks at the local feed store ....actually in Acton

i let the faucet drip a little into a raised pot
that has a under liner on it creating an Oasis
vineyardblues 07-19-2012, 07:28 AM I play horse shoes at a farm and was talking with them last night
We both agree that our squash are gone for 2012 ... wtf happened ?
kind of just stopped growing and died away
same as my house , too hot this year maybe ?
Raven 07-19-2012, 08:49 AM what kind of Squash? as my butternut is going gang busters....
but yes the Zuchinni is saying goodbye much earlier than expected
so i am going to replant it...since i use pots BIG pots[/B] ]
i have the option of moving them inside a protected heat-able space.
tomatoes are crankin as are peppers, banana peppers, carrots and broccoli
is now topped....but still producing from the side branches ...ok
but here's a cool tip (pun intended)
about Broccoli ...
you can leave the worn out vines (stalks) in the ground right thru october
and after you get your first fall frost they not only "Don't die"
but they get [I]stimulated to grow again as if its Spring and they
soon rejuvenate. so leave some around even if for nothing else to grow some seed and you'll be surprised.
Also as an experiment i tried growing them on the North side of the house in complete shade
except for maybe the last 2-3 hours of the day of afternoon sun
and they grew just fine....plenty of tops for dippin in sour cream dip
so there is no such thing as
awe man i
haven't any sun on this side of my house :bc:
because that is horse "cagada" (s__t) :uhuh:
Try it and see
Raven 07-19-2012, 09:00 AM slug control:
instead of spreading poison or wasting good beer
i simply went around on rainy mornings when the slugs were out in full force
and sprinkled some regular table salt on them
and slowly but surely i WON the WAR.....

Another good control is to lay down a piece of plywood
which they will take refuge under during the night. Then lift and use the old
salt shaker in the morning.
Bob Thomas 07-19-2012, 07:02 PM First garden this year. Very pleased with the results so far. Ate the first tomato today and first crop of beans are just about ready. Ton of tomatoes but they're a bit small.

Bob Thomas 07-19-2012, 07:05 PM Oh yeah...tomatoes (31 plants) broccoli, cauliflower, wax beans, green beans, cherry hot peppers, pickling cucumbers, banana hots and some herbs. Probably tone a bit down next year but I've become obsessed with the garden. Out there every day several times checking it over

vineyardblues 07-20-2012, 12:05 PM Looking good Bob
vineyardblues 07-21-2012, 10:49 AM Up the fence :uhuh:
JamesJet 07-22-2012, 08:09 PM so you did have OK luck with Broccoli in the shade? I had some space on the north side I have always wanted to do something with and maybe I'll did out and amend the soil a bit and drop some seeds. Now is a good time for them?
Raven 07-22-2012, 10:39 PM Now is a good time for them?
yes.... just remember that with cole crops ....i like to call them "cold crops"
there's always room for more water... i drop seeds in place....and i raise transplants too in flats in case those fail.....
i even grow corn in pots because sometimes it gets to hot and with pots
you gain the advantage of being able to move them any where they like it best...
just in case those fail ...as back up
for example corn grows best on the EAST side of the house...
plenty of morning sun but shaded in the afternoon... so experiment
Bob Thomas 07-23-2012, 05:07 PM VYB - that spaghetti squash?
JJet - i put my broc and cauli in and for the most part the area is shaded until around mid noon. Ben my old man who grows his in pure sun can't believe the plants though I see no heads yet. Leaves are big though

Yes sir ,
Picked yesterday , will cook up tomorrow :jump1:
Raven 07-25-2012, 03:40 PM got second growth coming fast of broc. shoots
but the squash is getting powdery mildew
what with 90 degree weather and rain
and my once luxuriant hubbard squash has some weird
white spots now.... like bleach splatter on a t-shirt
so i think the whole crop might fail before the fruit is ripe. :wall:
Bob Thomas 07-29-2012, 02:53 PM Well, the hits keep on comin! One of my tomato plants was producing fruit that rotted from the bottom. Can't remember the name but scrapped that. Then some of the other ones are producing very small fruit. Brocc. isn't producing anything but HUGE and I mean HUGE leaves. Beans are doing alright.
Seems like everything slowed down a bit. Hoping this rain we just had will help out a bit. Heaven knows we need more!
Raven 07-29-2012, 04:55 PM realized my bleach spots were due to safer insecticidal soap spray to foil the striped cucumber beetle which are small yet destructive.... so they're ok
BOB you may have over fertilized ....but that's just a GUESS.
Eating HG carrots that are so juicy they make store carrots seem like wood.
Squash- The regular yellow squash & zuccini we put in late just started not about two weeks ago but are quickly failing. The new striped Zucchini I tried this year (supposed to be more disease resistant) has been the star of the show and STILL going strong! Amazing the difference a variety can make.
Replanted so lettuce mix, bunching onion seed (use like scallions) and more swiss chard just for giggles a week ago and all is popped already and looking good so far.
Going to dig taters in a few days I think.....what shall I try in their place? hmm....
Raven 07-30-2012, 03:36 AM peppers seem to take the longest to germinate.
